I too, lived through the comic crash. I still have my holographic "Fatal Attractions" covers. The Xmen books were out of control with those. Now they are all in the dollar bins. I have been able to get back isues for really cheap, with vey few exceptions.
Cobra has won. The Battle is over. Or is it?

We sell a LOT of comics at my shop over the last decade.
The great crash as Diamonds refers to it was caused by over production of comic books by the manufacturers(Marvel,DC,ect.).
Due to collectors buying large numbers of books and speculating at high values the books ended up being worhtless when the market fell on its face. The comic industry agreed to set a limit on book production and go for quality of book over quanity. This was done so that the crash could not happen again.
In the 90's it was common to have 1 to 3 million of a single issue printed. Today the max is 100,000 of any one book, though 50 to 75,000 is far more common. If demand is there the companies will authorize a second printing at half of the original run usually with a varient cover. If a third is done that is printed 50% of the second run number with a third varient cover authorized.
Modern comics are printed in low numbers. This is why the modern era comics will go up in value more rapidly than the books from the 90's.
The reason for the price increase in modern books is due to the difference in paper and cover stock as well as inks. The modern books are made to last and will outlast their Golden and Silver age counter parts by decades.
