i have always been a bigger fan of the cartoon, but i will pick up joe comics when i see them for cheap. today i ran across an issue called gi joe special #1 with snake eyes on the cover and drawings by todd macfarlane. i did some searching on ebay for this issue, and to my surprise, i saw graded issues going for over $500. i paid $2.50 for this comic. it is in superb condition. i was just wondering, how rare is this comic, and how much do mint copies go for? thanks for any help.

It's really that rare at all. Some people on ebay just feel they can ask any price for something simply because it's graded. Then when you attach a name like Todd MacFarlane they get really greedy.

This is actually a reprint of a later book with a McFarlane cover. It is rare (I don't have one) because by the time McFarlane did a cover GI Joe was selling only a few 10,000 books a month. Remember, when Marvel started selling the Joe book, for most of the first 2 years it was in the top 5 comics sales wise, even outselling X-Men. I'm sorry I can't remember the issue it reprinted. I've been out of comics too long. (Maybe 135?)

They go for about $100 at shows ungraded.
Nice find. Which store did you find it at? And, it's very rare. One of the contributing factors to it's popularity is that it's an homage to McFarlane's Spider-Man #1. People love that $#it. It reprints issue #61. I found one at a show in a 50 cents box. After I paid for it, I showed my buddy what I pulled, and the dealer was pi$$ed!

It's not exactly a reprint of issue 61. Here's the long story:
Ron Wagner, the title's penciller at the time (1987), needed a few issues off for some reason, and McFarlane (who was relatively unknown at the time) was called up to fill in during Wagner's absence. McFarlane's work for issue 60 was published - but his art for issue 61 didn't live up to editor Bob Harris and/or EIC's Jim Shooters' expectations, so he got booted from the fill-in assignment and replaced by Marshall Rogers on 61 and William Johnson and Arvell on 62. Eight years later (Feb. 1995, two months after G.I. Joe, A Real American Hero's final issue), after McFarlane's work had gotten popular, somebody at Marvel dug up McFarlane's unused pencils for 61, had artist Mark Nelson touch 'em up, and released the art as G.I. Joe Special 1, with a cover by Phil Gosier that's a swipe of McFarlane's cover of Spider-Man 1. ;b Edit: Check out the link for some comparisons of the special and issue 61: Comics Should Be Good!
