No bashing, genuine conversation only please!
I've been reading the DDP run lately, and I got to thinking, they did some things right, but they did some things wrong as well. DDP did a great job introducing characters who fit and helped expand the Joe mythos. Firewall, Zanya, Mayday, Wraith and Kamakura are all fan favorites, and two have actually been made into figures. Hasbro loves their ninjas, and Kamakura has had more than FOUR figures, more than other Joes and Cobras we consider iconic, and he's had a few Sigma Six toys as well. Wraith was a hotly anticipated figure, and other clamor for a Mayday figure. Other toys and figures that have been in Joe fan's minds for years got turns in the comics, some who have never appeared as other than toys, including Big Boa, Skull Basher (Range Viper), Overkill, Overlord and SHOCKWAVE, a huge fan favorite. Interrogator, another commonly customized figure and one of my personal favorites (I've heard a few fans say they consider him part of their core Cobra Command group), even had a major appearance, and was hinted at throughout the first run untill he made his debut in WWIII. They also did a decent job bringing in new characters Hasbro was creating, including Barrel Roll, Blackout and others. BR and BO became instant hits with fans and collectors, and a few here om the tank are asking for modern interpretations of the brothers and their sister, Bombstrike, including myself, troynos and Slaymaker. Devil's Due also did a good job with creating a flow to their continuity at times. Mayday was in the first TPB and made a code-name debut in the latter issues of DDP's ARAH line. They also did a decent job of re-introducing old threats, such as Serpentor, Wingfield, the Jugglers and the Coil (their emblem has been on numerous toys and vehicles throughout the years. They also knew how o level up the intrigue, and some of their story lines had us GRIPPED, and they even killed off some major characters (Lady Jaye, Mindbender, Chuckles) and put others through the ringer. Unfortunately, they also made a few mistakes. Too many ninjas. I mean, they're cool as elite soldiers who can kick ass, but there were ninjas everywhere, and they were less unique and special, and GI Joe is above all a military sci-fi. Modern day ninjas? Fine. But don't push it. T'Jbang's mind transplant? SE brought back from the dead? What the...? And yes, people were mixed on the killing of Lady Jaye, but how many people were happy when SE was "killed"? Besides, we knew he'd be back in a month or too anyhow. Another low mark is Flint's character change. Of course he would be unhinged after jaye's death, but going "Death Wish" wasn't the answer. And he's lines? Ugh. "There's not enough of you to satiate my hate!"???? DDP did many things right, but they did a lot of things wrong, too. What say you? |

I didn't care for the way they kept re-tooling the team, roughly every 8 issues. Now they have bases all over the US...nope, now they only have a few members... actually, now the rest are in reserve... now the team is re-structured again. The constant roster shuffling made the Phoenix Guard arc seem less-than-intriguing.
Also didn't care for the way they wouldn't kill off Cobras. Bringing back the SAW Viper as "Overkill" was a mistake, IMO. Ruined the small closure the original story had. Just because we never saw the Ninja "kill" the SAW Viper on-panel, it doesn't mean that he survived. Many more things that irked me-- such as the pacing and the bad melodramatic fan-fiction flavor the stories seemed to have. A scene, late in volume I of the DDP series, where Flint, Duke, Hawk and General Rey all give each other verbal bl*wjobs was awful. But I did like some things... Liked how they made an effort to bring in new (current) vehicles and figures that were on the shelves--like the Rockslide, that Cobra helicopter and some other stuff. Working in new vehicles and stuff will always be a Joe tradition, so that was fun. They tried really hard to make new storylines. They could've sat on their rumps and gone on a retro kick with crap like "Return to Springfield" or "Shakedown Part 8", but they didn't. They weren't afraid to "push" new characters and work them into the spotlight. Kamakura being Sean Collins was terrific. The Barrel Roll and Blackout plot was rather cheesy, but I applauded their effort. The Red Shadows was a cool concept...but they weren't worked in, too well. Bringing back Joe Colton as a big cheese was another "thing they did right". The character really intrigued me when he was shown in the Marvel series, so it was cool to have the original warhorse running the show. Much better than having him sit in a lab coat atop the Chrysler Building. In both the Marvel and DPP series, having Joe (and Jane) around sorta' meant the ENTIRE history of the franchise was in canon for fans. So, yup, even some 70's kids with Mike Power and Bulletman dolls...errrr... FIGURES... could feel like their old toys were part of the big picture.

I agree with most of what you guys have said as far as the GI JOE story goes. I felt DD took too many liberties at times but I did like the integration of some of the cartoon characters and specialty characters (Sparks, Claymore, Shooter, etc..) . As for changing characters whole personalities. Now I know why they did that with Flint, even though it was kind of annoying, but some of the other characters didn't seem themselves. We love these Joes for who they are...don't totally mess that up!
My biggest beef with DD, was with the art. Once in a great while they had someone good. Folks who were worth being on GI JOE but most of the time I found myself disappointed. The last couple years they didn't even bother finishing the pencils let alone inking the artwork which is either real lazy or real cheap but the overall product suffered as a result. As an artist, I am very visually motivated and part of the joy of the comics medium is in the art. And being that I love GI JOE, I so wanted the art to be at least good if not spectacular. For the most part it wasn't and the only reason I was collecting it was for the story. |

During the Marvel run, GI Joe was a Military organization. But when DDP brought the Joe comic back, it was seen in the first issue, that GI Joe wasn't going to be "all military". They had CIA, FBI, and ex-con's on the team. Overall I liked what they did, but I didn't like the changing of the roster from a large unit to a small squad. The best thing I liked was in the last volume of the TF/Joe crossover-Black Horizon- how DDP managed to tie in every aspect of GI Joe from the Adventure Team to ARAH, even getting Star Brigade in there as well. And of course another fav was the new characters DDP introduced into the Joe world-Kamakura, Firewall, etc..

Good thread!!
Lots of good points and observations. My goods: 1.) WW3- GREAT GREAT story. Loved it through and through, though I felt like issues 6-8 were a bit slow and then they tried to hurry up and close things up. 2.) Military uniforms and jargon- Remember seeing one of the earlier stories with Hawk decked out in his Class A's- I think it was the one where he met Kamakura and asked about the Green Power Ranger. Anyway, loved the artwork where you could clearly see his Vietnam campaign ribbon. Also, cannot recall the issue immediately, but there was one where there were all sorts of army acronmyms like "reMF" and stuff scrawled on the vehicles. 3.) Further developed a lot of the characters- broke the image of some like Duke. 4.) Loved some of the "one-shots"- the one with Duke leading a team into that experimental base in the artic was just fantastic- X Files meets Spec Ops 5.) The SE Declassified were superb Didn't like: 1.) Hawk in the wheelchair 2.) Agree with the criticisms on Deathwish Flint 3.) Didn't care too much for any of the new characters 4.) The Storm Shadow series was just awful. Also didn't like the line where Duke became a Viper and Snakes worked "outside the rules"

I liked Reloaded, but towards the end, they just did things to shock us. It was cool to have a modern version of GI Joe, and I liked where it was heading. The first arc was bad-ass. |

never cared for the whole red ninja snake eyes thing, although i did the like the idea of SE turning on the joes.
I'm apparently the only one who liked the changed Flint, wished they would have taken it further and turned him into a total rogue badass, out killing cobras. the wwIII arc seemed rushed to me, and I never read declassified until after that arc, I was so hoping Delta was shooter!! Vance Wingfeild was awesome, so was the phoenix guard, the Plague and SE vs Firefly. I'm also in the minority of those that liked Reloaded, loved the reboot and wished they didn't cancel it |

To be fair, GI Joe started out as a relatively small unit. If anything, this approach was kind of a "back to basics" thing.
