Well I am very disappointed with the final issue. It had absolutely nothing to do with the series. It was just some letter to Snake-Eyes, who wrote back about his life, and then the Pit is closed. So what happened? WHy did they shut down the Pit when Cobra has conquered a few countries in Europe? I don't understand the ending, or the lack thereof.

What's not to understand?
Joe was canceled. That means that there was never going to be any wrap up to the ongoing plots. It wasn't planned to end, it was canceled. But basically Marvel let Hama write #155, which is one of the best issues out of the entire run. It was his statement about what it's like being a soldier. The two issues prior were not written by Hama, the only 2 Marvel Joe to ever be written by someone else. So really Joe was canceled with #152 but Marvel allowed Hama the time to craft #155. It's not meant to be a wrap-up to the series, because there were so many plots still ongoing. Not even DDP picked up on those. #155 was meant to be a statement, Hama's personal thoughts. |

Sorry to disappoint but it doesn't. Hama never specifies how much of a gap exists between the Marvel and IDW series, but a gap does exist. The old storylines don't get picked up, as of yet (maybe someday it'll be explained but probably not). #155.5 starts with a new storyline.

Yeah, I have bought the first three paperbacks for 156+, but just from glancing through it, I don't see how it even relates to the Marvel series. I'm going to read it, since I did buy them, but I'm not picking up anymore volumes until I read those three. I've been told there are major continuity issues in them with dead characters being alive.
I did find out that the four issues of Frontline I have (and never read) was meant to be a conclusion. As such, I just read them. I definitely felt more satisfied with that ending, but even then, there was still no true conclusion. Cobra's activities were never full stopped, and not all plotlines were completed (plus, characters like Zartan and Storm Shadow were suddenly back in their early outfits). I guess the Reinstated series through World War III is indeed the best conclusion to GI Joe we will ever have as Cobra is fully defeated. As a whole, I am glad to have finally read all of the classic series. Despite its downsides, the entire series was well done, well written, and it showed me a side of GI Joe I never realized existed. It made me love Cobra Commander, gave me new insights to characters like Storm Shadow, Zartan, Hawk, Snake-Eyes, and Scarlett, who I never thought could have had such deep development. I do wish characters like Shipwreck and Covergirl did not just disappear, but I guess them being there for an issue or two was better than characters like Scoop and Alpine, who never even had an appearance once in the entire series. Another thing I liked is, unlike the cartoon, the Joes were compiled of only individual people and not also of nobody soldiers that are pretty much there to be canon fodder. On the negative side, some of the last batch of stories were not all that great and felt out of place. For example, the whole crossover with Megatron should have been a sidestory that was not part of the main series. Wasn't there a set of side story issues or something? That should have been told in there instead of taking up 4 issues that were more boring than anything else. In fact, I guess that is what bothered me more than actually having a Transformers crossover, that it was done in such an uninteresting manner. Nevertheless, I loved reading this series over the last two years and now it makes me scared to reread the Reinstated series because I am not sure I am going to enjoy that series as much as I did before despite the conclusion.

Oh, and actually, Herb Trimpe wrote some issues of Marvel ARAH, including one of Special Missions, besides the 154 and 153 issues. |
