Except for the great possibility we will therefore never see a modern era version of Dial Tone.
If the new continuity has him as a woman, OK, kinda unnecessary, but fine. The problem is we can't get Cover Girl or Ripcoard in modern versions because Hasbro doesn't want to confuse new fans. Different hair for Cover Girl and a different skin colour for Ripcoard are hardly as drastic as a different gender. If Dial Tone is a woman in the new comic, OK, many of us may just not take up the new comic, end of story. But if it affects our ability to get classic Dial Tone again, that to me is where the problem lies. |

I could care less at this point, but the desire to have more female characters would be more justifiable if the artist in that sample could at least draw a halfway decent face on a woman. Scarlett and DT both look like Storm Shadow beat them with an ugly stick and then invited the rest of the Ashikage to finish the job.
Edit: Okay, maybe that's a slight exaggeration, but they coulda looked better in that shot. For now I'll just chaulk it up to a rush job and hold out hope the regular series will look better once the artist gets a better feel for the characters. As for Battlestar Galactica, I think Ron Moore is having the last laugh. If we learned anything from that, it's that Dirk Benedict and his "Stardoe" comments prove that he's the whiniest bitchthere is. Last edited by Zefram; 12-09-2008 at 08:41 PM.. |

This argument is going to go around in circles.
It's like you say "Tomato", I say "tomato", only in this case, one tomato's a dude, and the other tomato is a tomata! ;) |

well i think darth hennig put it best. ITs not so much they wanna change the continutity....i dont read comics anyways....its the fact that since now dial tone is a woman we most likely wont get the classic forms of them in modern era styling cause of the BS of hasblow sayin' things like "oh well no ripcord cause no ripcord is black and cover girl is a blond with long hair." I think thats the major issue i have with this kinda change crap. If they are gonna put out classic versionf of the charcaters then do what they want with this new crap. it'll fizzle soon enough but dont change the charcater to a broad and then say oh well now this is dial tone you'll never see him as he was again ha ha ha!!!

Like I said many times already, the movie is a completely different beast than this new IDW comic series. The movie is MASSIVE exposure. To the general public, Ripcord will be a black man. But the IDW comic is a much smaller niche market that will have little to no effect on the public perception of the brand and its core characters. Therefore, while the reasoning may be frustrating it is valid for the movie and does not apply to the comic. Logic. Reasoning. |

10 to 1, classic colored Ripcord and Cover Girl come out as internet retailer exclusives or variants during the movie run.
Any takers? I think it's a stupid argument. Hasbro thinks that it will confuse consumers, well, guess what? That doesn't matter, as odds ar, they'll buy classic versions as well as us collectors. Remember the Jurassic Park Lost World toys? Most of those toys didn't look anything like the actors, and they sold fine. The bald hunter's toy had hair, and I still bought one! Kids won't care, so why should us collectors be punished for it? I know that this is not perhaps a valid argument with Ripcord, but Cover Girl's hair? Who the BLEEP cares??? Make a Modern Era Dial Tone as a dude, and then, if you want, as a woman, WE'LL BUY BOTH!!! Seriously, Hasbro should understand, what they put out we will buy.I've heard a ton of people say they will "buy a toy just to have it". We are such sad, sad consumer whores. As for the issue of DT as a guy or girl, I want a classic DT toy, but a new, female DT in a new storyline is fine by me. |

as long as we get the classic versions as NON EXCLUSIVES i am fine with whatever new crap they wanna do as i dont buy the new stuff. I despise the movie and its changes and i have little love for IDW in general as they cant seem to do any kind of continuity properly so i have no hope for the new comic. Maybe if marvel or image had it maybe but IDW cant seem to do stuff right and this is just further proof.

People need to understand one thing right off the bat. The IDW comic HAS NO CONNECTION TO THE EXISTING FIGURES/CONTINUITY.
It's starting from square zero. The core concepts will remain the same, but everything else is up for grabs. IDW, Resolute and the movie are not being made to appease the fans of the old stuff. They are being made to get new fans into the Joeverse. There is room for everything and it will be done that way. Just because the comic book has a female Dial-Tone doesn't mean a Classic Dial-Tone won't come out. Doesn't mean a classic Ripcord won't come out, just won't come out before the movie. What's the big deal there? Wal-Mart recently had an exclusive box set that had 3 versions of Bumblebee: Classic, Movie and Animated. Joes will end up with the same kind of thing: classic, movie, resolute and IDW. It amazes me how much people around here have a "the sky is falling" mentality. "How dare they change it. Who do they think they are!!"

its not so much how dare they change it but more so WHY would they change it? Thats the million dollar question. I can see them maybe altering the war history of say stalker snake eyes storm shadow from nam to something in the last 30 years, say like desert strom from the early 90's or something thats understandable...but all black power suits? Nanites? They wanna have a black guy or so in there fine....but dont call him the code name of a charcater whos ethnicity is totally different. I can udnerstand them not wanting to use stalker cause marlon is black...people would rise up and shout oh no hes being stereotyped cause hes black. What...hardball wasn't an option or maybe an entirely NEW codename? Thats what i don't get man...they make these changes thinkging no one willntice...like roablock being called heavy duty etc etc.... I mean the stuff they are changing they think makes joe work better and i am sorry it really doesnt. Its like the old addage goes "if it aint broke don't fix it".

I don't know why they decided to use Ripcord, even without making the ethnicity change, Ripcord would still be an odd choice of a Joe to use. Duke - leader Scarlett - have to have the female Snake-Eyes - need the bad ass Hawk - overall leader Heavy Duty - heavy weapons Breaker - communications Ripcord - what does the movie need with a halo jumper There's lots of different guys (white, black, etc..) that they could have used instead. So why use Ripcord? There has to be a reason why they went with him instead of a character that would have worked better (as far as speciality/role) like: Stalker, Beachhead, Grunt, Footloose, Leatherneck, Gung-Ho, Hit 'n Run, Tunnel Rat, Spearhead, Shockwave, etc.. So until the movie is out, and see why Ripcord was used, I'm not really going to care if he's black, white or polka-dot. And why is no one upset that Breaker's ethinicity got changed?
