When I was a kid, I read most of the original Marvel/Hama run of Joe comics from #1 to #80 or so. I loved those stories.
I haven't read any of the modern era comics at all by IDW and others. Since many of them seem to be available in trade format, what do you think is the "best" modern era Joe comic storyline? Something that you would suggest to read/start with? Thanks in advance,

I've often wondered this myself. Seems like there's so many and they don't just give comics away, you know. at one time I had volumes 1-10 of the Classics tpb. I unfortunately let them go. But on Sept. 25, they are releasing volume 1 of the entire Marvel run, including the year books and Special Missions. So I'm gonna buy that, and I may get into the new ARAH comics.

I, too, LOVED the original Hama run. Thanks to TPBs, I have just received my final volume, #15. Now I get to finish reading the line that I never could previously. Some crappy stories? Yeah, some are, for sure. But nostalgia wins out for me. As a result, I have been reading and collecting the new continuation of Hama's; they, too, are collected in TPBs (currently, I purchase the comics once a month, and then buy the TPB when they come out). The storylines are so-so up to this point, but potential lurks. I just love reading the same continuity by the same man who made my 80s comic book reading so memorable! I look forward every month to the most recent Hama release. Issue #182 should be out late August/early September.

G.I. Joe: America's Elite is arguably one of the best, it came out in 05 and ended in 08.
I've read vol. 1-4 of the IDW run. I think the first 3 volumes are really damn good, but vol 4 I found rather slow and boring comparatively speaking, it wasn't horrible, but it was enough to make me decide I would rather have G.I. Joe Classics Vol.4 over the IDW vol 5. Also the way IDW numbered and named their TPBs is confusing as hell, even to a comic reader. They couldn't just call it G.I. Joe Vol. 6 or something, they have to go and make it Vol 1 G.I. Joe *insert subtitle here* Not to mention all the spin off books with almost identical titles, let me give you an idea. G.I. Joe:Cobra Civil War Vol.1 G.I. Joe:Cobra:Cobra Civil War Vol.1 G.I. Joe:Snake-Eyes:Cobra Civil War Vol.1 And of course IDW also has the continuation of ARAH. The series is a bumpy ride. If you wanna know what I mean by 'Bumpy' Just search for anything about blue ninjas. Of course original ARAH was really the same, I recall people being really pissed off for a while until issue 84 came out, then everyone was happy again. The early issues of the continued ARAH I find pretty fun. I'm particularity fond of a scene involving all the HISS tanks from 1-5 and a group of Cobra Drivers arguing over who has the best one. Though I wouldn't recommend the continuation until you've read the rest of the Marvel run, it's not really needed to do so. However it is a thought. Perhaps you should pick up G.I. Joe classics vol 9 issues #81-90 and start where you left off.

G.I. Joe: America's Elite was a good series. It ran for 36 issues.
The new IDW stuff is good too. G.I. I'm a couple issues behind on Snake Eyes & Storm Shadow though. I missed an issue and my shop should have ordered it already, but I have to check again. The continuation of ARAH started out good, but the recent Blue Ninja stuff isn't so much fun, just as PhantomStranger said.

Out of the more modern stuff i really enjoyed a lot of the Devil's due run which would be the Disavowed tpbs. Black Horizon is also really fantastic. It's an elseworlds transformers crossover and I don't even like transformers but I still love it. It's i believe the only comic that features Cobra-la.
Out of the IDW stuff the only really good stories IMO are Cobra Command, Cobra 2, and the continuation of ARAH. A lot of people like the first Cobra series but I wasn't a fan of the art style. The Cobra Civil War is just a huge mess. I wouldn't recommend that. Everything mentioned you should be able to find in trades. |

Devils' Due G.I.Joe America's Elite is the shit!
Too bad DD lost the Hasblo license. Probably because America's Elite took no prisoners and didn't apologize for making gutsy decisions. IDW stuff isn't any better than DD. It is just more confusing. Why did DD lose the Joe license anyway? DD paid their dues (pardon the pun). So I guess Hasblo thought IDW would suck Hasblo's pecker better than what DD would. |

Hands down, it's America's Elite. The series had a serious theme, and the Cobra Commander we knew as a pushover in the Marvel series is a no-no here. America's Elite depicts Cobra not just a ragtag, terrorist group, but a threatening, rogue army to be dealt with.
