So for now I'm sticking to Hama's Joe, Conan and some manga like Berserk and Claymore. |

Ultimately IDW can't bring in more fans until Hasbro creates a definite Joe marketing strategy for IDW to create stories based upon. * The Joe comic is based upon a toy. If IDW is looking to bring more readers in in order to help Hasbro sell more toys their focus should be on stories connected to the movies (which i believe they have but i don't follow the movie verse ..). * I would imagine that a fair % of GI Joe fans ( if not the majority) are "old school fans" that grew up with ARAH and the iconic characters in their original forms. If that is the case i don't see the majority of IDW joe comics being used as a vehicle to move toy product as those toys don't exist anymore (the 25th line and ARAH). If they are being used as a vehicle to move ARAH / 25th / Classic toy product then Larry Hamas ARAH GI Joe title is perfect for that. Much like his original run he includes a variety of characters and vehicles that were made in toy form by Hasbro in his stories. It isn't the best IDW Joe comic IMO but it's fair and gives you plenty of "bang and pow" like the good old days as a kid. * IDWs "Cobra" and "GI Joe" titles are the best titles of the bunch and i enjoy them a great deal. The writing is quality and mature . The problem ? What exactly are they selling? The "Joe" and "Cobra" titles , while excellent reads, aren't promoting a film or pushing a toy. They aren't supporting a cartoon series. In essence potential new joe fans are being asked to pick up the title on a whim or based upon allegiance to the brand. If they had allegiance to the brand they would probably be picking up Hamas monthly ARAH. Other comic book companies have crossovers starring bigger names in order to entice readers to give the new comic a chance but IDWs Joe and Cobra do not have that option. I'm simply not sure a significant increase in readership will occur without Hasbro being more focused and consistent on what they'd like to market. They made a mistake in my opinion by not creating a GI Joe movie that was more closely aligned to its 1980's roots ala Spiderman movies. New actors ..same core story. IDWs GI Joe and Cobra separate titles really are a pleasure to read as a joe fan. Last edited by Plasticfan; 07-15-2012 at 04:35 AM.. |

I have every issue of the DDP run... they're in my B/S/T/, LOL.
I'll eventually pick up the trades of Larry Hama's continuation, after I pick up the last few Marvel Collections from IDW.

I don't think IDW's books are irrelevant, I just don't think they're the original Marvel run.
If you're a Joe fan looking for some new material then IDW is where it's at. The stories aren't that bad. In fact, some of them are pretty good. |

And Cobra is the better book. It's what I want out of a GI Joe series in 2012. ARAH was great but it's 30 years old and while Hama's continuation is decent, it's surviving on nostalgia. Mike Costa has taken third teir characters and made them interesting and compelling. Cobra Civil War slowed that book down but if it IDW can keep it on the fringe to the main story then it will continue to be great.
Dixon needs to go. His stories lack a certain pop. I always liked the faster pace of Larry Hama's writing and I feel like Dixon has one big idea and is writing for the trade. Very plodding. Also, I think part of the problem is the fragmentation of the property, as was mentioned earlier. ARAH succeeded in comics and toys because there was a single voice - Larry Hama. You could read a comic and go buy the toy. I think IDW is moving to that point now but it's taking a while when it should have been more planned. |

I think my issue is... why have 4 mediocre books a month when you could put out one QUALITY title each month?
Like DC has something like 15 Batman themed books a month and Marvel has approx 20 X books per month. I mean, come on. Is it ONLY about grabbing our entertainment dollar cause of nostalgic love for the characters? If so, then tell me because then the truth is that the story doesn't really matter, they're just selling the flash in the pan. I want a GOOD GI Joe story to read... NOT a story that's "not bad"!!

I am looking forward to the Danger Girl crossover. In my head it is going to be the big crazy widescreen action I want from Joe, but with a more modern voice (which I think is what hurts Hama - he suffers from Chris Claremont disease). |

Maybe not, but I really think they are to the fanbase - but that is opinion. I admit to being surprised that this thread has drawn this much talk. There is next to no chatter when a new issue comes out. I am excited for tommorow with the introduction of Billy (the most important character in RAH mythology without a figure) in Cobra and the aforementioned DG crossover.

I like the SE book the best too. The story where he, Helix, Alpine and that other guy attacked that snow fortress was the bomb diggity.
