Storm Shadow is my favorite character. Rather than being the generic evil ninja clad in white, or the heroic ninja clad in white like Joe Musashi from Sega's Shinobi series, he was a complex character with much depth. An honorable warrior who had his own personal demons to overcome. What did Snake Eyes have to overcome? His feeling of bad luck when away from his twin. What did Storm Shadow have to overcome? His own jealousy, numerous brainwashings from Cobra, a path of revenge that consumed his soul, and finally, his animosity towards Snake Eyes and eventually, Zartan and Firefly(from the Storm Shadow solo book, and wave 4 comic packs). In the end, Storm Shadow did the right thing. He didn't do the predictable thing. He didn't given into his desires. What we have, is a well crafted, well written character, and now he is back in the hands of Hama, at IDW.
So which direction do you think Storm Shadow should go? Do you think he should be the anti Snake Eyes, and go the generic evil ninja clad in white route? Or should he walk the tragic hero route, the long battered path to redemption eventually? I would go with the latter, simply because that is Storm Shadow at his core; what makes him unique is his battle with his own personal demons, fighting not only within, but the exterior influences that only want to use him(Cobra). If you take that away, you just have a random ninja in white that fights Snake eyes because those two are the main ninjas from their respective forces. To me, that is boring and predictable. It reminds me a lot of the generic Ninja b movies from the 70's. Honestly, what other ninja character is like Storm Shadow? Not many. He is unique, not only in G.I. Joe, but with regards to ninjas in general. I trust Hama's handling of the character and know that he will be written well in the IDW comics. For example, if he starts out with Cobra, that's cool, so long as he is not truly evil, just infiltrating and with his own personal reasons. I hope he is still written as the tragic hero who must overcome his personal demons and his own desire for revenge. At his core we must remember, Storm Shadow was never intentionally evil, he was always a hero. |

Where has it been said that Hama will have Storm Shadow in G.I.Joe: Origins? I haven't seen anything about Storm Shadow.
To be honest, I hope not to see him. I really hope they keep the ninja element out of it. I hated the brainwashing thing. It was a lame excuse to get Storm Shadow back to Cobra. I loved why he was there in the first place, revenge and needing information that Cobra Commander had to find his uncle's killer. That was great motivation. But the brainwashing was just a cheap way to get him back to being Cobra's ninja. I hope not to see him in IDW's run.

Still doesn't change the fact that it was cheap. Hated it.

He is my second favorite character, simply because of Hama's history of him. The cartoon version was always lame and somehow ended up being Spirits arch-enemy.
Go figure... |

Cause in the cartoon Snake Eyes wasn't the bad ass he was in the comics.
Snake Eyes started out as a Commando, a bad-ass soldier but just a soldier. Spirit, in the cartoon, was supposed to be more of a mystical native american warrior. Doesn't explain why they made him and Storm Shadow into arch enemies, but could just be because of what happened in their introductions in Revenge of Cobra. Technically, Storm Shadow would have wiped the floor with Spirit.

Storm Shadow is one of my three favourite characters (Serpentor and Hawk being the other two)... and I always loved the way he was written out.
I think Shin forgot to mention one important thing... when he was with Cobra he was totally loyal to the Commander, not because he believed in the Commander's vision for the world but because he gave his word that in exchange for CC revealing who killed the Hardmaster Storm Shadow would serve the commander faithfully and that meant something to Storm Shadow to the point he was willing to sacrifice himself to ensure the Commander's freedom because his word was given. That makes him the most interesting member of the Cobra inner circle... not blindly worshiping the Commander and not trying to take advantage of every turn for his own gain either... I actually really like how he was handled not just by Hamma but even in Devil's Due he was one of the better written characters. I hope they keep the great tradition on this character that's been seen in every incarnation (except for the Ninja Battles DVD which just made him seem awful). |
