G.I. Joe #0
It is here! The first issue to the new joe comic! What a bang troops, 4 covers for issue #0, 2 of witch are variant issues. The sketch visor and the Snake Eyes/ Storm Shadow cover were the incentive issues. I believe the ratio was 1:10 and 1:25 respectively. I know there has been a few member reviews so I will spare all of you mine but I will say this; this will be a great series and this one started with a loud boom! I believe the fears of the reboot has been set aside for now. The first issue to the mainline book will be out in January and the rest will follow after that. Here is a solid review from HissTank member Snake Eyes- Joe Ninja: Figured I'd send out a review of the issue. I know other people have talked about it, but I didn't see anything very elaborate, so here's my two cents... Characters seen (In context): Duke Hawk Flint Chuckles Torpedo Beachhead Tomax or Xamot (Possible) In the small story with Chuckles, he is approached by an individual who wears a blue business suit with red higlights and lapels and has brown hair. This is possibly one of the twins. Of note: It appears that Roadblock will be officially renamed Heavy Duty, according to the character design sketches, which include Duke, Destro, Snake Eyes, Scarlett, Baroness and Heavy Duty. Heavy Duty/Roadblock wears his V2 uniform. Larry Hama makes a comment of coming up with a new baddie to "out-bad Cobra Commander and Destro", and that Raptor will likely not make an appearance. There are three stories (which you probably know about already), including Duke and others attacking a gun runner freight boat, getting the word "Cobra" for their troubles. Another story has Hawk (threatening with a gun???), asking Duke if he's in or out. Big surprise, Duke says yes. The final story hints at Chuckles' first encounter with Cobra, and gives you an insight to his character, which I relate to a nor toned protagonist in a military story. Overall, I would give this a B+, as the price is great for the stories, interview and sketches. There isn't much there, content-wise, but what is there is pretty good. |

G.I. Joe #2
Shin Densetsu's review: This review may contain spoilers. In this issue we are introduced to a new Joe named Brainstorm. We see him in the experimental weapons lab of the PIT, designated sector 9, and nicknamed the “fobbit(non-combat personnel) hole”. Brainstorm and his crew use the Broadcast Energy Teleporter(BET) to power a boombox. The BET greatly amplifies the signal range of the boombox. It’s broadcast field folds space while sending energy over unlimited distances without loss of ampage. General Hawk doesn’t seem too impressed, but tells Brainstorm to carry on nonetheless. He and his crew happily decide to return the other boomboxes back to the PX/BX and burying the trashed ones. This is one of the first fantasy elements we encounter in IDW’s G.I. Joe series, and it’s a surprising touch. It isn’t over the top, nor campy. More importantly, I can definitely see the joes using the BET’s power to great use later on. We find Stalker, Recondo, and Leatherneck in the Philippines, on the trail of Nico. The joes are unfortunately there during monsoon season. Nico was last seen in issue #1, running driving away from his mansion after an assassination attempt on him. The art team did a great job of conveying the rain in these panels. The colorholds and splash effects are done well without distracting the eye, and maintain good visual clarity. It is very easy to overdo special effects in scenes like this, and I’m glad that nothing was overdone here. Snake Eyes is seen in the distance, on the rooftops while Stalker and crew follow Nico by car. The only distracting aspect of the dialogue here, is the broken English of Stalker’s cab driver. Duke is irritated because Stalker’s team was sent after Nico, instead of his team. The tension between Duke and Scarlett is quite evident here, as it was in the last issue. Duke knows that Snake Eyes is AWOL and unofficially following leads for Scarlett. At this point, we still don’t know why there is tension between Duke and Scarlett. There doesn’t seem to be some sort of love triangle here; more like Scarlett not having much faith in Duke. We are introduced to another new joe named Labrat. The gun that Snake Eyes found in Nico’s mansion last issue has been analyzed. Turns out that the gun is free of metals and composed of plastic polymers as well as ceramics. It is surprisingly deadly; capable of firing thin polymer needles on a stream of compressed air. Scarlett and Labrat try to figure out the purpose of the gun but are stumped. The gun is also disintegrating. The powder that was sent to Scarlett by Snake Eyes was also analyzed. It is also missing traces of metal. Minerals, proteins and acids all in the same ratios as in the human body are found. Seems like the threat has increased, as the joes are possibly up against a biological weapon, which can destroy it’s own evidence. The mysterious device that the joes retrieved in the last issue is looked at by the fobbits. Now, we finally see who has been monitoring the joes with this device. The device feeds to monitors in a castle. Here we are introduced to Destro. Destro notices Brainstorm and recognizes him as physics professor who was said to have died years ago. It turns out that Destro only wanted revenge against the American agency who ruined the Istanbul deal, shown in G.I. Joe #0 & 1. However he has stumbled upon something bigger. He decides to hold off fighting just yet, and to continue spying. After Destro goes to the M.A.S.S. lab within his castle, a diver infiltrates the sewer of his castle. Once her diving suit is removed, we immediately recognize The Baroness. The colorholds and saturation are used to great effect here, accurately depicting the view under water. Brainstorm notices that Destro’s device in the PIT is in standby mode, and since he is confused, decides to sleep and check it again in the morning. Meanwhile the device awakens; different sections of it with moving legs start traveling around the PIT. Destro and his servants realize that their device is in a military base. They can’t get a fix on the PIT’s location since the signal is cloaked, however Destro suggests boosting the signal. Looks like the BET may not help the joes after all… In the PIT, Sparks and Bankshot appear briefly before Bankshot is shot up by one of Destro’s devices. In the end, we see The Baroness holding Destro at gunpoint; and acknowledging that she knows his true identity. This issue provides much to look forward to in future issues. Destro’s devices have become his trojan horse in the PIT. For a covert organization, G.I. Joe gains more threats facing them, as at this point, we don’t know if Destro has his own intentions, or if he is working for Cobra. The joes haven’t figured out who Cobra is, we don’t know who The Baroness is working for yet, and the evidence that Scarlett has is disintegrating. We find more resistance and reluctance from Scarlett to support Duke. The new joes such as Labrat and the fobbits are made for good purposes. The threats against the joe team rise, and this issue proves to be exciting as we see the odds start stacking up highly against them. |

G.I. Joe #3 Review
Shin Densetsu's review: Alright first off, in my review of the last issue, many of you on the forum thought that this issue would feature Snake Eyes. Some of you saw the variant cover as a clue to his involvement in here. He isn’t in this issue at all. The PIT has been invaded, and Destro’s devices are running amok, terrorizing the joes. Duke and Beachhead run towards the source of gunfire, followed by a blonde, machine gun toting joe who might b e Rock ‘n Roll. Hawk realizes that the devices didn’t breach the PIT, and that they were already there. At this point he sees a soldier next to him with a gun. He orders him to give up his gun so that he can use it, and says “come get some!” This is distracting because so far, Hawk has shown a strict demeanor, the phrase doesn’t sound like something he would say. He seems more like a battle hardened general when he doesn’t shout out cliché phrases. “Come get some!” is a phrase I would expect in an action movie, not from the General Hawk we have seen in the IDW books prior to this issue. The gunfire that the joes aim at the devices isn’t doing much but distracting them. At this point Rory and Glynis’s view from the device monitors is obscured, by Brainstorm using a fire extinguisher. This temporarily blocks the vision sensors before the device can use it’s sonic sensors. At this point the joes slap on some charges and blow one of the six devices up. Rory and Glynis plead for help from Destro but he is still being held at gunpoint by The Baroness. We find that The Baroness is not an assassin for hire, but a core member of Cobra, and that Destro’s actions have gained Cobra too much undo attention. Destro’s negotiation with The Baroness isn’t going well so he commands his pet Clyde, to attack The Baroness. Clyde doesn’t last long. Back in the PIT, the joes try to find out why they have been infiltrated. Brainstorm realizes that the attack has been a decoy, and that the real target is the old server farm in the missle silos of the PIT. While Rory And Glynis try to utilize the rest of the devices remaining, they ask Destro once again for assistance, but Destro is still fighting the Baroness. As the joes speed towards the server farm, more devices are destroyed, and some of the joes start screaming “yo joe!”. Yes this is a G.I. Joe book, and yes that phrase is typical, however it felt campy and I don’t think it was necessary. It reminds me more of a cartoon aimed at children as opposed to a book for an older audience. Brainstorm explains the importance of beating the devices to the server farm. The server farm contains all the information on the G.I. Joe team, everything from personnel info to strategic info is contained there. Spiking the drives from within the PIT is the only way to get access to information on G.I. Joe as it’s a closed system; not on any grid or net. Unfortunately while Brainstorm explains this to Beachhead, Rory and Glynis have managed to invade the server farm with their remaining devices, and start decrypting the stored information. The joes make their way to the server farm and one device runs away through a duct. However it is near oxygen and fuel lines, so the joes hold their fire. Brainstorm is extremely worried, because if the device is able to reach the surface and go outside the GPS blind spot, it can transmit the location of the PIT. |
