I have yet to pick up a comic and read it. But I feel as though I only have one side of the story with the joe universe watching the cartoons when I was little.
I understand that there are issues 1-155. And the most recent run that has WWIII. But what I want to know is, where does all the declassified stuff and the other stuff fit in. For the experts if you were gonna read the comics how would the run look?

If you are asking chronological story-wise
Dreadnoks declassified-only becuase some of it takes place before SE, Zartan Backstory Snake eyes Declassified-SE Backstory, best of the bunch, alittle CC backstory GI joe declassified-formation of the joes, original member backstory, you find out about a character named shooter. Scarlett declassified-art isnt that great, but the story is interesting Marvel run 1-155- old school joe, good reads, Ninja force gets a little far fetched at the end. Marvel GI JOE special missions and Yearbooks-Side stories and reference material Devils Due GIJOE Frontline- starts out with a story in between the marvel and DD run, then becomes alot on 4 part series and one shots. Devisl Due Master and Apprentice I- story of Snake eyes and his apprentice Kamakura, it is a great read, take place between the two runs. Devils Due/Image GIJOE ARAH- 1-43 Great read, everything you would expect from gi joe Master and Apprentice 2- Focus on Storm shadow in this one, takes place between A Real American Hero and Americas Elite, really gets into the mind of Storm shadow. Devils Due GIJOE Americas Elite 1-36-Ends with WWIII story and art werent too bad for most of the series, in my opinion not as good as the ARAH run. Devils Due Special Missions- one shots some tie in to the main story arc of Americas Elite Devils Due Storm Shadow- story centered around SS obviously, takes place at the same time as Americas elite, But doesnt really tie in. if you like ninjas read it, if not. it can be skipped Devils due also had the Datadesk Handbooks- reference books like the Year books, character and vehicle info. Outside the normal story continuity completely Gi Joe Reloaded- a modern updating of the story- alot of changes, not a bad story, but not that great either. alot of license is taken with some characters. both Marvel and Devils Due had a GI joe Vs transformers story, I didnt actually read the Marvel one so I cant comment on it too much. the devils due one has 4 parts to it, the first part is a really good story, the rest are....interesting to say the least. I am sure I forgot some stuff, but if you want any specific info I will be happy to give it Last edited by harkiri; 08-27-2008 at 09:27 AM.. Reason: forgot stuff :) |

There is also a Dreamwave crossover which was two parts, the first one was a world war II era take on the story, the second one was modern day but Dreamwave went bankrupt after the first issue came out. As stated there are four Devil's Due Crossovers, which are very fun because they create their own continuity, where Cobra becomes a credible menace because they find the Ark with the deactivated Transformers... the first one is the best, but the others are good too (especial Art of War and Dark Horizons). |

Question along these lines...
Which of the Declassified Novels are worth a read? I'm only familiar with the Marvel run and haven't read much of anything else. |

If you are not bothered about starting in the right order-my advice is to start with the "Americas Elite" graphic novels

Great list. I don't know if it was late and I was tired or what, but the Dreadnok Declassified was all over the place. I wanted to finish the whole thing in one sitting, but a couple of times I had to sit there and think about the last couple of pages I just read to keep the story straight. It made Memento flow like From Justin to Kelly.
Then again, I had a hard time explaining the whole thing to somebody who grew up w/ Joe but didn't necessarily follow it. |
