G.I. Joe #24- "The Commander Escapes"
Writer: Larry Hama Penciler: Russ Heath (!) Summary: The Joes set-up a remote prison for the Commander, in the Colorado Rocky Moutains (I pissed myself as a kid), using the "pre-fab fortress". Meanwhile, Storm Shadow is flying around in a converted bomber, searching for the Commander. In Springfield, Major Bludd reunites Destro with the Baroness and the three scheme to take over Cobra. Bludd planted a homing device in Storm Shadow's sword hilt, so they dispatch new operatives Firefly and Wild Weasel (un-named) to track it down. Back in the Rockies, Storm Shadow uses the CLAW and the help of the Commander's helmet radio to rescue him. Roadblock manages to clip one of the CLAW's fuel tanks. With only enough fuel for one man to make it back to the Cobra bomber, Storm Shadow stays behind. Duke pursues the CLAW in the new Skyhawk, but two FANG copters arrive to distract him. The Commander makes it safely to the bomber and escapes. But Roadblock's beaten the crap out of Storm Shadow, so they have another prisoner. They find that Storm Shadow had a packing slip addressed to Choholoskee, Florida. Back in Springfield, Firefly and Wild Weasel report in; they've traced the homing device to a swamp shack near Choholoskee. The Commander suddenly arrives in Springfield and announces that he knows all about the guy in the shack--- Zartan! Zartan appears and holds-up Firefly and Wild Weasel at gunpoint. G.I. Joe #25- "Zartan"
Writer: Larry Hama Penciler: Frank Springer Summary: The Joes take Storm Shadow to Alcatraz for their own specialized prison. A few hours later, he mysteriously disappears. Meanwhile, Cobra Commander, Destro and the Baroness arrive in the Florida Everglades, where they meet Zartan and the Dreadnoks. The Joes have also arrived, in their freighter the GI Jane, which they use to stage their operations. The Joes use two Dragonflys to drop a recon team of Tripwire, Torpedo, Mutt and Junkyard (Mutt's dog) into the swamps. Zartan detects the Dragonflys on his radar and sends the newly-freed Wild Weasel and Firefly out in the Water Moccasin to fight 'em off. The Cobras' vessel is blown away by Deep Six in his new SHARC. Deep Six returns to the Jane, where he gives Wild bill and the rest of the team the silent treatment. Wild Weasel and Firefly run into the swamps and are promptly treed by Junkyard. The Joes tie up Wild Weasel and Firefly, while Junkyard takes off running. Junkyard walks right up to Zartan's porch. Zartan opens the door and prepares to SHOOT Junkyard! While all this was happening, Snake-Eyes visited the injured Gung-Ho in Bethesda Naval Clinic (he was sliced by Storm Shadow, last issue). Gung-Ho notices that Snake-Eyes has a tattoo similar to Storm Shadow's. Snake-Eyes seems startled and instantly runs out of the hospital. #26- "Snake-Eyes: The Origin- Part 1""
Writer: Larry Hama Breakdowns: Larry Hama (!) Finishes: Steve Leialoha Summary: Junkyard isn't shot, as Destro saves him. Destro quotes Kwinn my mentioning: "a man who whips a dog will pull his own sled one day". Zartan, Destro, the Baroness and Cobra Commander all follow Junkyard into the swamp. Mutt, Tripwire and Torpedo think Junkyard's leading the bad guys to them, but Junkyard leads the Cobras into quicksand. Wild Weasel and Firefly escape from their bonds and run deeper into the swamp. Back at the Pit, Hawks, Stalker and Scarlett try to decipher the I-ching symbol that they saw on Storm Shadow and Snake-Eyes. Stalker flashes back 10 years to Southeast Asia, when he, Snake-Eyes and "Tommy" were all LRRPs together. Snake-Eyes and Tommy were tight, like brothers. During a chopper pick-up that went bad, Snake-Eyes was shot down. Tommy raced through the bullets and carried Snake-Eyes back to the chopper. Tommy used his wristbands to bandage Snake-Eyes, which is when Stalker noticed the I-Ching tattoo on Tommy's forearm. Back in the present, Stalker finds out that Tommy's unprouncable last name (Arashikage) translates into "Storm Shadow". Hawk takes over the flashback, recounting the time he picked up Snake-Eyes at the airport, when he arrived home from Vietnam. Hawk was there to deliver sad news: Snake-Eyes's entire family --his twin sister and both parents-- had all been killed in a car wreck, caused by a returning vet on a drug binge. Meanwhile, up in Spanish Harlem, Snake-Eyes enters "Comidas Chinas", a Cuban/Chinese restaurant being run by his old friend, the Soft Master. After Soft Master calmly thwarts a hold-up, they flashback to Snake-Eyes three years in Japan. Taking Tommy's offer, Snake-Eyes joined the "Family Business" and entered ninja training, under the tutelage of the Hard Master and the Soft Master. Tommy was the Young Master, but the elder members began to consider Snake-Eyes as the heir. Tommy had a nasty streak in him, especially with his bow expertise. Using the "ear that sees", Tommy shot through a target and the wall behind it, hitting a squirrel outside the complex. Later, the Hard Master and Snake-Eyes were engaged in a one-on-one training session. As the Hard Master was mimicking Snake-E yes's fighting style, an arrow flew through the walls, killing the Hard Master. The arrow had the Young Master's distinctive markings on it. But with his dying breath, the Hard Master insisted that the Young Master wasn't to blame. The Young Master was seen running out of the complex and never returned to the "family business". Back in the present, Snake-Eyes and the Soft master surmise that Snake-Eyes, not the Hard Master, was the real target that night. Appearances: Characters (with figures): Snake-Eyes, Storm Shadow (as Tommy the Young Master), Stalker, Scarlett, Hawk, Tripwire, Torpedo, Mutt & Junkyard, Destro, Zartan, Baroness, Cobra Commander Characters (no action figures, or "comic-only" characters): The Hard Master, the Soft Master Vehicles and stuff (toys): none Vehicles and stuff (not toys): none to speak of (Huey choppers and the Snake-Eyes Family Wreckage) Firsties: Characters:The Hard Master, the Soft Master Vehicles: none |

#27- "Snake-Eyes: The Origin- Part 2"
Writer: Larry Hama Penciller: Frank Springer Summary: Courtesy of Hawk, Stalker and Scarlett, the Snake-Eyes flashbacks continue. After six years, Hawk and Stalker looked up Snake-Eyes while they were assembling the G.I. Joe team. They found him living in a log cabin in the Sierras, with a wolf. From there, Scarlett picks up the story, as she recounts the first time she met Snake-Eyes: during a hand-to-hand combat drill, she noticed that Snake-Eyes was letting her toss him around. Intrigued, she caught up to him and they took the Staten Island Ferry to Manhattan for dinner. Jump forward a few months, as Scarlett covers the helicopter accident that scarred Snake-Eyes. A second chopper blew up and while trying to save Scarlett, a fireball blasted Snake-Eyes in the grill. Snake-Eyes then spent six month in plastic surgery. Over in Spanish Harlem, Storm Shadow has tracked Snake-Eyes to the Soft Master's restaurant. Snake-Eyes takes off after Stormie on a wild chase involving street cleaners, break dancers and a final fight on top of a subway train. The Joes hear about this and load up the VAMP and Dragonfly to investigate. On top of the train, Storm Shadow has his back to tunnel and is about to get plastered. Snake-Eyes invites him to attack him. They tumble between the cars as Storm Shadow realizes that Snake-Eyes just saved his life. Storm Shadow confesses that he did NOT kill the Hard Master-- it was really a masked assassin who escaped in a Cobra helicopter. The assassin used the arrow that Storm Shadow had shot through the wall (see last issue). Stormie then decided to work him way into Cobra, with the intention of catching the real killer and gaining revenge. Storm Shadow disappears as Scarlett and Wild Bill find a silent Snake-Eyes between the subway cars. Down in the Everglades, the Joes have eluded the Cobra camping trip. Appearances: Characters (with figures): Snake-Eyes, Stalker, Scarlett, Hawk, Wild Bill, Clutch, Tripwire, Mutt, Torpedo, Rock n Roll, Grunt, Timber, Storm Shadow, Cobra Commander, Destro, Zartan, Baroness, Wild Weasel, Firefly, rest of the original Joe team as cameos. Characters (no action figures, or "comic-only" characters): The Soft Master Vehicles and stuff (toys): VAMP, Dragonfly, FANG (in a flashback) Vehicles and stuff (not toys): none Firsties: Characters:Timber Vehicles: none |

#28- "Swampfire!"
Writer: Larry Hama Penciller: Marie Severin Summary: Torpedo, Mutt, Junkyard and Tripwire make it back to the Jane and map out the swamp for the assault team. Zartan and the Dreadnoks, aware that the Joes are planning an assault, all turn tail and leave the swamp. Destro, Wild Weasel and the Baroness go downriver where they've had three Cobra Rattlers concealed in water tanks. Destro and Wild Weasel each take one and fly back to the swamp, while the Baroness heads back to Springfield. Once there, she visits a detained Major Bludd and enlists his helps for an upcoming plan. Back in the swamp, Cobra Commander and Firefly discover Zartan's defense system-- a series of robotic HISS Tanks and robot troopers. The Joes head off into the swamp with the new WHALE hovercraft, the Dragonfly and the recently arrived MOBAT. Destro engages the WHALE in a duel with his Rattler, while the MOBAT runs the robot guards. The WHALE takes down Destro's Rattler, but not before Deep-Six is injured. Wild Weasel flies Cobra Commander back to Springfield, stranding Firefly in the swamp. Destro and Firefly meet up and plot revenge on Cobra Commander abandoning them. #29- "Beached Whale"
Writer: Larry Hama Penciler: Frank Springer Summary: The Joes dock the banged-up WHALE at Ehrlinger's Cove on Florida's coast. Destro and Firefly, intent on getting back to Springfield, sneak into the Cove at night and steal the WHALE. The Joes chase them over the land and sea, but the two Cobras make their escape in hollowed-out depth charges. The Joes recover the WHALE, but Firefly had it rigged to blow. Tripwire tries to smother the detonator, but Roadblock tosses it up through a ventilation shaft, where it safely detonates. Destro and Firefly sneak onto a fishing boat and disappear into the ocean. Back in Springfield, Cobra Commander holds another neo-Nazi rally, where he unveils his newest plan: the Crimson Guard! Deep spies for Cobra that will infiltrate middle America and become respected citizens and eventually politicians. #30- "Darkness"
Writer: Larry Hama Penciler: Frank Springer Summary: Zartan and the Dreadnoks notice a GI Joe Dragonfly landing at McGuire AFB. Zartan uses his hologram powers, disguised as "Hawk" and confirms the GI Joe presence. Zartan calls up Cobra Commander and tells him that McGuire HAS to be the GI Joe HQ. Just as Fred sets up his surveillance equipment, Cobra Commander calls up and orders him back to Springfield, aborting the snooping mission. The Joes figure out Zartan's ruse and move out to McGuire to repel the Cobra attack. The Dreadnoks screw up the assault and Cobra Commander's attack is quickly thwarted by what appears to be the entire Joe team (with all of their land vehicles).
