I've never read any Joe comics but am interested in starting. However, looking at the list from IDW it seems to make little to no sense to me. So, I have an initial and hopefully easy question-
If I understand it right, IDW #156 is a continuation of the original Marvel series, correct? Assuming that's the case, is the other series that recently started with #1 a total different continuity? Or is it in the same universe? And, assuming it's separate, are the other ones (Cobra, Cobra II, Cobra Civil War, etc.) "with" the "new" series that started with #1?

Yes, #156 is continuing Marvel's run. Best series IMO.
The others are IDW's continuity. People seem to like the COBRA series the best. I think the art sucks in it compared to the main book. |

As M7 says, you're right. #156 is a continuation of the Marvel run. There's actually a #155.5 that was released on Free Comic Book Day, if you can lay your hands on it, but it's not necessary to understand what's going on.
IDW's three other series (GI Joe, Cobra (and Cobra II), and Origins....now relaunched as GI Joe, Cobra, and Snake-Eyes) are a completely different continuity, but inclusive among themselves. Cobra Civil War is an event that was triggered from the pages of Cobra, and is still going on. I think M7 is right about the art of Cobra, but it does have a distinctive style that grew on me pretty quickly. It was also a better written book, IMO. The main Joe series, to me, had a whole lot of nothing happening. Origins was hit or miss. If you're interested in checking out the old IDW series before Cobra Civil War, it might be fun...there's not too many issues to have to hunt down. It's nice that, except for a brief crossover between the main GI Joe series and Origins, they all run independent of each other. I would recommend starting with the Cobra miniseries and the Cobra II series. But all the series just relaunched, so you should be able to find #1's of all new books in you local comic book shop. And I think that if you pick it up now, you'll be up to speed without missing too much without a problem.
