Just curious how big everyone thinks merchandising for the movie will be. I know we'll see figures and vehicles, but what else will there be? Role-play accessories? Galactic Heroes styled Joes? Mighty Muggs? Any thoughts on the subject?

At least as big as what we are seeing with Indy. Hasbro probably internally feels like this is an unofficial follow up to the Transformers movie for them. And unlike Indy they don't have to share revenue with the movie studio. So I bet we see it all.

I think the toys will be bigger than the movie, which will probably perform somewhat disappointingly considering it's budget. I don't mean Speed Racer bad, but I don't think it will match Transformers.

I am reminded of an interview Jay Leno had with Jake Lloyd (young Anakin Skywalker in the Phantom Menace). Jay asked him what he thought about all the merchadising associated with the movie and what he thought was the weirdest one. Jake thought his face appearing on a pair of underwear was a little too much.
I hope it doesn't go that far.

I hope it's huge... (G.I.Joe unleashed anyone?) But on the other hand, if Hasbro goes off the hook with merchandising and the film bombs.... well, Hollywood will manage to do in 90min what Cobra hasn't been able to do in 25yrs:Kill G.I.Joe

I'm expecting marketing overkill on this. We'll have GI Joe figures, lunch boxes, backpacks, Burger King glasses, and bedding. If the movie is a hit, then long time fans will get everything they ever wanted (a really cool movie PIT headquarters would make me really happy). If it bombs, then Joe fans can still get cool products and just claim they're buying them for their children.
Win-win for us no matter what.

I would like to see Hasbro take over the toy aisle with G.I. Joe and Transformers right at the beginning of summer with the two movies coming out. I mean tons and tons of product that takes up one entire side at Target or Walmart. Leverage the visibility of Transformers for G.I. Joe, get kids accustomed to G.I. Joe well before the movie comes out and excited for it, want to buy all the characters and then go see the movie. the toys should sell the movie to children, not the other way around. if Hasbro takes for granted that kids are going to simply want to see the movie because it's G.I. Joe (despite it's inability to connect with kids for a while), they will be sadly mistaken, and the toy line will flounder.

Releasing a new Cartoon before the movie comes out could go a long ways towards getting kids interested. First the Toys, then the 'Toon, and then they'll be clamoring for the movie.

This is what I think will come out:
Birthday cards, gift bags, happy meal toys, cereal promotions, video game, tshirts then....
toys:3-3/4" figures, comic packs, vehicles, heroes figures(like Transformers robot heroes, marvel super hero squad), 12" Hasbro figures, 12" Sideshow figures, 8" movie based Sigma 6 figures with a more realistic body, et al.

That would be nice although I'm still pissed at the guy who handed out the ROTJ Luke's at my local theater. He gave me one with a destroyed card and refused to let me exchange it for a better one, damn that guy.

Call me crazy, but I'm hoping that the digital camo from the costumes will be avaliable to the public as I'm wanting to make Cover Girl's fatigues. I'm pretty much betting it will because they came out with Transformers material when the film was released.
And I'm totally betting a Burger King promotion is going to be in the cards.

Beware, if transformers is going to be relased before GI Joe as stated in the release schedules, GI Joe WON'T have a huge merchandisign sicne it will compete to transformers.
If transformers is pushed back to 2010, then we can see deffierent lines.

How so? Iron Man and Indiana Jones' premiere dates are close, and Hasbro went all out on merchandising for both. Not to mention with Hulk too.

Come one, none of those franmchises have the same amount of merchandising as transformers did. If Habro plans to do the same type of merchandising for both Transformers and GI Joe, then both lines will end up eating each other.

No they won't. They are made by the same company but are two completely different lines. Any time there is a movie, there is money to be made, I doubt Hasbro is going to cut them shelves short. Iron man may not seem like it has a lot of stuff but its a line of 6" figures comprised primarily of the same character but different variations. You still see figures in multiple formats, role playing gear, gift merchandise, et al. Transformers was different, because it had way more characters. Gijoe will be the same way. They know there are a lot of fans for both that might not like the other property, they aren't going to just shaft joe collectors so transformers fans can have their fun. If there is money to be made, they will make it. Iron Man's toy line didn't stop Hulk's toyline from coming out, both still have future waves remaining as the year progresses, as well as the Marvel Legends line and maybe the 3-3/4" Marvel line, in addition to another Hulk line, only comic based. Indiana Jones has a ton of merchandising, look at the selection of toys on shelf, its in abundance.

I wanna see the Baroness' image on birthday party merchandise. So I can eat cake off of her.
Plush Cover Girl would be cool. Especially if it came with a programmable voice chip. You can make her say stuff like
"Wanna see me touch my toes?" or
"My shirt's dirty. Can I wash it in your sink?"
I'm gonna stock my workspace with GI Joe school supplies LOL
I wanna be able to walk into Hot Topic and buy a Cobra Commander hood or a Destro Mask. 80's style, even if their movie versions don't have the classic look.

Both lines will be directed to the same target market competing for it, you can ask here how many tankers had to choose between Transformers and GI Joe as kids, the same will happen now. The target market are not wealthy people, if they were, there will be no problem with both lines competing, but money is short.
It's simple economics Shin.

well i hope they FINALLY make a planogram for the Joes. ie a decent space where they'll be overflowing the pegs.
well, that's if they'll gonna go ahead with it. i hope.
and please.... no more of those unwanted stuff like the Combat Heroes stuff, or those Shake and Go thingies, just make the toys the way they're suppose to.

Im thinking this will be about as big as Indy is, with snake eyes role play stuff and vehicles, figures of different scales playsets, maybe board games. A SNAKE EYES POTATO HEAD! I think at the most we will see 3 foot sections per store.
this wont be as big as transformers was. But hey, I hope im wrong!

I hope it's big. But there is no way this movie will be as big as Transformers, Indiana Jones, Batman, Hulk, or even Iron Man. Those properties had either huge followings, named actors, large budgets, and years of comics. GI Joe hasn't had this much cache in pop culture since the 80s.
Transformers, on the other hand, continued with popular TV shows and toys that always had more space in the toy aisle.
Indiana Jones has been anticipated for several years with a popular and well-loved character and actor.
Batman is cultural icon.
Hulk has maintained a larger presence than GI Joe. And say what you will about the last movie, it still made something like $300 million or more worldwide.
Iron Man . . . actually baffles me. He isn't that famous a character but I think the movie stood on its own merits. And a lot of people were rooting for Robert Downey. Even then, his toys seem to have come and gone in the toy aisle.
I just don't think GI Joe will have anything near as much as Indiana Jones.

I hope it will be as big as Transformers. I want to see G.I.Joe fandom rising up once again. A lot of adults tend to be nostalgic folks so when they see the Joe movie at the theather they will surely buy stuff from it.

Your joking right?
Indiana has what, 3 large vehicles, a motorcycle and some figs?
GI Joe will knock Indiana out of the park. They will have a lot of vehicles, they will have a ton of figs, playsets, blah blah blah.. It will be more than Indiana by a long shot.

Hasbro owns Transformers, they do not own Indiana Jones, Hulk, Iron Man, and Star Wars. Transformers is iconic, but lets not forget, its cartoons immediately prior to the movie weren't exactly groundbreaking nor popular with a wide audience. To say the Cybertron toy line even came close to the sucess of the movie toy line would be a lie.
Hasbro will go all out for the movie toy line. Most likely it will be bigger than what they have planned for fall this year(consider this, Hasbro usually goes all out when there is a cartoon or movie on air, this year we have nothing, next year we will have the movie). Merchandising for previous Transformers lines was nothing compared to what Hasbro pulled out for the movie, and lines thereafter. The same will happen with gijoe.

I mean we have 3 vehicles so far for GI joe and this isnt even a movie line. We have 6 this summer coming out, and more in the fall. And we have had 8 waves of figures in one year in a line that is on the back burner on Hasbros radar. And this is all in a year where GI Joe means nothing to the kids.
I think next year will be huge. These other toy lines are just a drop in the bucket compared to what we will get with figures and vehicles.
