What does "premium format" mean? How big is it?

Gorgeous. But I'm under the impression that the Premium Format figures are actually NOT poseable. Essentially just really pretty looking statues.

Can anyone confirm or deny that?

Aladdin Sane

Yeah, they're usually at least 18" tall and mainly in fixed poses - arms/wrists/head may move.

Premium Format statues are 1/4th scale statues that are mixed media. In other words, they are part polystone, part cloth, part metal, part plastic, etc.

Some of them have had slight articulation, but they seem to have gotten away from that. Sometimes they have swappable parts like heads or hands, and you can usually swivel them at the joint, but it's not articulation per se.

I am surprised though that on a figure that big and expensive they didn't go for a chrome faceplate.

Thanks for saving me the time to post that. Statues seem to never go over well with fans of Action Figures because it's just that, a statue. But imo, statues blow action figures out of the water. They're just really expensive, that's the only downside really.

Wow, that's too bad. I had high hopes for this figure until I found out what it exactly was. After seeing the Viper, Stalker, Beachhead and others I expected this to be as cool as they are (in other words: very possible and with a crap load of accessories), but alas that won't be the case.

Lack of articulation is NOT winning...

As an afterthought. You really have to wonder why they decided to do PF's for this line. I mean, don't get me wrong. They are amazing pieces. That pirate they did was killer, as was The Hitman figure. However, GI Joe is THE action figure. It's entire appeal is the fact that it's the best toy for playability because of it's superior articulation. Which is pretty much exactly everything a PF figure isn't. So why would the majority of hardcore fans of the original action figure, slap down 3-4 bills on a figure that is incapable of action?

I definitely understand your point and you are correct for the majority of fans. But, I don't think premium format figures are for the majority by nature.

My interest in G.I. Joe all came from the crisp intricate sculpts, the graphic design of their vintage cards and boxes, the marriage of realistic and fantasy coloring and finally the attention to detail of their accessories and file cards.

Articulation was on the list of facets of the line that appealed to me but it was not very close to the top.

Good point. Sometimes I forget that not everyone remembers before ARAH. To me the 1:6th Sideshow line is like heaven. All the coolness and versatility of the Old School Big Joes, with all the style and cool characters of ARAH. When I was really little there was Joe, and the Six Million Dollar Man, and my older cousin had her Barbies. My Joes would bomb around in my old Tonka Bronco and shoot the hell out of Ken, who couldn't even old a gun. What a d'bag Ken was... lol

To me I can't see paying 300 bucks for a figure that's 18" tall and doesn't move when I can pay a 100 bucks for a figure who looks just as good, but is fully articulate. :/

I like this. Cobra Commander is one of those Joe characters that actually does work as a statue. I also have the Palisades Cobra Commander statue from years ago and I still love it. I display it with my 3.75" Joes. The scale of it looks like a statue erected in Cobra Commander's honor. This new 1/4 mixed media statue should look good with my 1/6 SideShow figures.

You got to remember this is Sideshow we are dealing with here. They are more focussed on Statue's than 1/6 scale most of the time...in fact, the only 12" figures they are making are G.I.Joe and Starwars, thats it.With this PF release of the Helmeted CC just means its going to be a long time till we get the 1/6 version of it.
I do wish Sideshow would just focus on 12" releases so we can get more characters sooner.

I'm surprised that it isn't Baroness, especially since they have that CC statue with the two Crimson Guards coming out in the summer. Competing products.

Wonder if they'll attempt to do a cloth hood for the Ex.

Either way, I guess we probably won't see a 12" faceplate CC for a while.

Third shot from the left looks all kind of wrong...

I'll wait until Tuesday to pass judgment, but so far I don't see many details on the PF that couldn't be done just as well on a 12" figure. That might be more of a testament to the quality of that line, though. With some of Sideshow's other lines, the head sculpts on the 12" action figures were pretty neutral/generic looking, while the PFs had a lot more "character."

I remember a few years back for the SDCC, I almost didn't ordering the 12" Crimson Cobra Commander and look at that piece now.
I'm got a gut feeling this piece is going to skyrocket on the aftermarket

I gotta be honest, The fact that the hooded portrait isn't cloth is ridiculous to me. I thought these were supposed to be "premium"? I think if they had made the helmet removable to expose just the domed head, and then have a normal portrait with the masked stitched on then it would have looked better. Honestly, the fact that the hoods on the 1:6th versions are sculpted look horrible to me. On a 400 dollar 1:4 scale mixed media statue it's just BS, imo.

I'm not sure if a cloth hood is as easy as people often think. Seems like even the life sized ones always end up looking looking pretty bad. That said, the one on the exclusive statue looks better than the PF.

The small size as well as the positioning of the Cobra insignia on the jacket is disappointing, too. All in all, if you told me I was looking at a posed 12" figure I'd have said it was a decent, but far from great, design. Pretty underwhelming for the debut of the PF line.

I know it wouldn't be easy. Which is why I think people understood when they went with a sculpt for the 12" figure. However, as we've said. At 18", Premium Format, and at that price tag, there's no excuse. If you can't do it right, maybe you shouldn't do it at all, imo. It just smacks of lazy to me, and it makes the alternate look cheap to me.

I really like it. Although I generally prefer hooded CC over chrome-dome I think I'd go with just the helmet on this one. I really like the collar, and you can't see it with the hooded head.

Does the exclusive edition also include the big sword that non-exclusive has in his hand? I prefer the sword over the golden scepter.
