...Is badass!!! I made some extra money selling off the tail end of my wrestling figure collection on ebay. So I decided I wanted to buy something, and I've been eyeing a few of those GI Joe Sideshow dolls. I'm just having a hard time trying to justify the cost, which I really can't, spending $150 on a doll is ludricous! But just this one time I finally did it, and Firefly has always been one of my favorite characters, as a kid I actually got him and storm shadow on the same day at childrens palace!(memories).
So I finally come home today and its pooring down rain and sleet, and on the front porch was my package not just one package but two, because I also splurged and bought an Army of Darkness poster too. But to my horror they were getting soaked in the rain and sleet. I wanted to kill the mail man I told him once before to leave packages on the back door step where its sheltered and out of sight. I immediately got both items inside and removed them from the rain soaked boxes, thankfully both the poster and the doll had a plastic sheath on them, so neither of them got wet!
Now that I have Firefly out of the box, man this thing is cool, I can't really find any complaints. I mean when the original photos showed a black mask I was upset, figured the doll was ruined, but then they added the second head, so right when sideshow did that I knew I wanted to buy this doll. It's my first from the GI Joe line, and wow, the bandolier strap when loaded up with ammo clips and grenades, and the back pack, this thing is incredible.
But there is one complaint, no ankle articulation? Thats kinda bummer. But otherwise nailed it, now I'm feeling as if I should have gotten storm shadows too! No.. I gotta fight the urge, I can't keep up with this line, well unless I can get stormy at a reasonable price I might still bite. Then this supid viper doll, why does it have to be cool? I'm not gonna go broke, I hate you Sideshow!!!.... But if you're like me and you can only buy one, I'm telling you Firefly is your man!

If it has clothing its a doll, the 3 3/4 dudes are action figures! And I'm not afraid to admit I already played with this Firefly doll! Except I left his clothes on, and the zippers and snaps I left alone, I fear breaking sideshow stuff, its fragile at times!

If it comes with guns and manly acessories it's an action figure. Now if it came with a Malibu beach house, no weapons and its name is Ken, then it's a doll. Thats what I did with my sister's Barbies, tape guns to their hands that way they became action figures and the other boys wouldn't ridicule me and Ken was allways tied to a chair being interrogated by Destro.

The Sideshow FF figure almost roped me into collecting the 12 inch figures. I'm so glad I was able to resist, because I really don't need to get into spending money on those things. But the FF looked awesome, and if it didn't rope me into the Sideshow figures, nothing will.

^ Agreed. They're dolls. We just refuse to admit it because of the feminine connotation.
Who cares. You ain't gonna persuade non-collectors what the definition of an "action figure" versus a "figurine" versus a "doll" anyway. Try doing so with random co-workers or whenever you take a brand new date home for the evening. They just see these 1/6 figures as a male doll with guns and clothing. And if you disagree, refer to paragraph #1 above. lol
Bottom line, is that these dolls are friggin cool.

When I wake they're always there
Waiting just to freely please me
While I wash they're occupied
Cleaning things, so sweetly, neatly
When I play, they play with me
Willing to do anything
I love my dolls
You must believe me
It's plain to see, they really love me
I love my dolls
They'll never leave me happily
While I sleep they keep me warm
Nestled right beside me tightly
As the sun begins to rise
They prepare my morning bounty
As I eat they wait on me
Making sure I'm satisfied
I love my dolls
You must believe me
It's plain to see, they really love me
I love my dolls
They'll never leave me happily
When friends come over they're astonished by the sight
So many dolls in just one place gives them a fright
Don't understand why they feel so uncomfortable
Around my dolls
I love my dolls
You must believe me
It's plain to see, they really love me
I love my dolls
They'll never leave me happily

FIrefly is pretty cool. I like the great gear they'd given him. he's very very spot on. Much how Snake eyes and Storm Shadow were. Flint seems to lack a little bit in a few areas but not a total blow. Awesome that Sideshow is trying to do such iconic characters in the joe verse. much how they did for Star Wars. now.. they need a Shipwreck so I can be" happy":)

He may not be an iconic character, necessarily, but can you imagine how awesome a Sideshow Lowlight would be? I mean, if Hasbro can do a 4 inch figure with the cool amount of accessories they did, imagine how cool a Sideshow figure would be.

IMO, more realistic characters like Lowlight, Snow Job, Rock n Roll, Leatherneck, Hit n' Run, ect. would look awesome done by Sideshow. I've actually liked how they've managed to make the characters almost look real world. Zartan would be the only figure I've seen that looks disappointing so far in that respect. However, I could totally see putting a different shirt and body armor on him and having him work.

Congrats man! Firefly IS an awesome figure, and a great way to start off. Trust me, it will be VERY difficult to resist. I got in way back with the first figure they did, and tried to resist getting Cobra Commander when they released him. Didn't last long - so far I've gotten all (although I did try not to get the Crimson Cobra Commander... again, broke down and got him in the end). My favourite's probably Duke, though I've been away so I haven't yet seen Flint, Beach Head and the Red Ninja in hand (though they're waiting for me).

Yeah, difficult to do with characters like Zartan, I suppose. Personally I'm thankful they didn't try anything drastic, as I appreciate their attempts to pay homage to RAH. It's one thing to make the Joes or someone like Firefly into "realistic" figures while still retaining their original look, as they were pretty realistic to begin with, but that'd be a lot more difficult with someone like Zartan or Destro (or Serpentor?), and these are definite must haves in the line...
I'm almost certain we'll see Snow Job and Rock and Roll from your list, at the very least. Probably the others, eventually, as well!

They are dolls! Get over it you homophobes! If it has clothes, it's a doll. Not that there's anything wrong with that. These things look so effing cool! I don't have any but I have a couple of the MP Transformers and I assume these are about the equivalent of those for G I Joe. That said, the Transformers don't have clothes so they qualify as action figures. haha!

What I LOVE about 1:6th scale is that if I love a figure, but not all of his gear, or apparel, it's easy and fairly inexpensive to change it up. That way I only need one of each character, and can use different gear for different missions. On my Cobra Officer I snagged a BBI Russian Winter Camo Jacket and now he's ready to go. Cost me 2 bucks. So even though I'm not huge on the way they went with Zartan, he's just a shirt and vest change away from being perfect for me.
Here's a pic of my Officer. Two bucks well spent, imo.

Sideshow said a few months back that we'd be seeing Desert, Jungle, and Marine themes soon. With the first two covered by Dusty and Stalker, I'm guessing that Shipwreck will be the marine-themed one. I just wonder if it will be the sailor or the SEAL version.
I guess that Torpedo or Wet Suit are possible, but Shipwreck generally gets more recognition (just like Stalker was chosen for the jungle theme rather than Recondo).

I believe they are both on tap. While I can't wait to see them, I'm kind of ticked that we're getting rehashes of characters that have already been done, when there are so many awesome characters that would rock with the Sideshow treatment. Why can't we just get heads, and alternate uniform sets? We really don't need entirely new SE and CC figures, imo. Much like the Desert Sniper. That could have just been a Uniform that was put up available for purchase when the Cache and Dusty went on Pre-Order. It would work for any of the three Cobra Troops, no reason to buy a whole other Sniper. Seems really shady, to me.

Wasn't the term "action figure" specifically coined to advertise the original GI Joe figures from the '60s? If that's the case, clothes are irrelevant. An action figure is any "doll" specifically marketed for boys (or, um, adult collectors, nowadays).
As for "figurines", it always seemed to describe small, non-articulated figures. Like those little Smurfs for example. I would say that Combat Heroes are figurines.

Yeah, basically that's the reality of it. However, if the guys on here want to try an make themselves feel better about the size of their... um, toys by calling these dolls, that's fine. I don't care enough to argue. It's all pretty silly.

I despise the term "doll" being used for a collectible that comes with devices, gadgetry and ammo that can kill you a thousand different ways.
Dolls come with hairbrushes, pretty ribbons and have happy smiling faces.
Action Figures/Collectibles come with guns, explosives and a face sculpt that lets you know your about to enter a world of hurt.
Please remember this distinction in future posts:)nope just dolls with guns
AN Action Figure has to see action , now my 8 yr old boy has action figures, my girl has dolls , and mine stand around and get dust on them

I don't know if this has been mentioned yet (I only read the first few posts on page 1), but the 1960s 12 inch G.I.Joes popularized the term "action figure". With that being said, my thought is this...
- If it was designed for play by young girls (target demographic) and has limited articulation, it is definitely a DOLL. (Polly Pocket is 3.5 inches and is a doll IMHO)
- If it was designed for play by young boys and has detailed articulation (ball joints, more than 5 points of articulation, etc), it is definitley an ACTION FIGURE. (all 12 inch figures with more articulation than a barbie are definitely action figures)
- anything in the gray area can be labeled as either one, but in the end... they are all TOYS.

I'm glad you made that leap to the 1/6th....Dolls...Figures...Collectibles....whatever. ..these are truly awesome pieces and I still put FF in my top 10 collectibles ever.
Thanks! I agree with you on Sideshow's FF. He is definitely the benchmark, as far as I'm concerned. They took a classic character and updated him, but still kept him perfectly true to who he was. It doesn't get any better then that. He's unquestionable Firefly, but also looks modern and real world believable enough to mix in with other realistic 1:6th lines. In my opinion, he's the best of what Sideshow has accomplished.

I'd bet that there will still be a second version of him that is more directly copied from the v1 figure (like their concept art originally showed). They may have decided to wait until they could perfect his v1 style backpack and all its little tools and accessories before doing that version. Firefly is too much of a no-brainer design (average build, always clothed head to toe, and faceless) for them not to revisit again.
I also really like the one they did release, though. I pre-ordered the Exclusive with the thought of possibly canceling down the road, but am glad I stuck with it (the additional camo portrait sealed the deal).

It's good that they listened to the fans, but to be honest, I could've cared less about that head. I don't want exact 100 dollar versions of toys that came out in the 80's. Those designs don't hold up, imo. That camo head looks ridiculous in 1:6th scale to me. I prefer the modern look, especially for a character like Firefly. I'm glad that the company cares so much about what the fans think, and want, though.

Actually, I snagged them at Toy Anxiety. They had them onsale and had 3 of them. I scooped them all up since between my Officer and Troopers I wanted to get, that would cover an Arctic team. I've seen them on the 'bay for around 3 or 4, but make sure you check the shipping.

Yep. I forget the thread but they indicated that they are hoping to provide the color-change feature. They said to look to their Zartan vs Flint statue to see the direction they plan to take him in aesthetically. I really hope we get an update soon. I get their newsletter but so far nothing.
Back on topic, FF is my favorite. I'm not interesting in collecting these since they will likely just sit in the box for safety. But I was very impressed with the design and materials. Especially the tiny replicated buckles on his vest and weapons.
My only complaint is the painted mask. It seems like a really cheap end to an otherwise detailed figure. I found it kind of jaring. Why not a cloth mask on a real head?

Likely because the only way to make that look right is for the head underneath to be bald. Since FF never takes off his mask anyhow, why go through the hassle?

I don't think I've ever even seen a 1/6th cloth mask look good on a figure... I think Trooper13 is right, but I'm not sure even that would look as convincing as a sculpt head.
I'm sure it's possible but I'm not sure we're there yet. Hot Toys is doing some pretty fantastic things with 1/6th clothing that outclasses anything seen even only a few years ago, but I don't remember seeing even them put out fabric masks. I may be wrong, though... I do vaguely recall a military CIA figure with a cloth skull print mask that looked alright, and I THINK that was Hot Toys. Doesn't mean Sideshow could pull it off yet.
