Hello all,

I really do not post all that much. Just a lurker for the most part. I thought I would share something to everyone (some of my buddies have already seen the pics) that has been hanging on my wall for a bit. Been snowed in for a week and I finally got around to taking some semi-descent pics of it.

I just thought it was a cool part of Joe history worthy of framing. Hopefully I posted this in the right place and in the right kind of format. If not, sorry about that.

Take care,
John

Did we know this was ever even considered? I've never heard mention of it before. The letters and estimates certainly make it seem like a live-action film. Craziness. Certainly something awesome to own!

ZOMG that would've been so much better than ROC!!!!

Nah actually i think we got off lightly.

There obviously wasn't a Joe movie in 1990, but apparently they were planning one at some point.

Also, the frontpage says it was to be an animated movie. I don't see anything saying that. Storyboards are still drawn for live-action movies. I would never guess an animated film would cost $30 million 20 years ago. A fairly big-budget action movie? Sure.

uhhh this is what a 90s gijoe movie would have been like...and it would have been hilarious.

Good catch. That's my fault - there's no indication of whether it was a LAM or not.

But from what AGE has done during that time period would be animation

Wow this is awesome I had no idea there was suppose be a second movie animated or not. Makes you wonder where the line would have gone had this actually been done, strange giant robots with a bunch of Joes in little bubbles and that sure looked like a transforming city towards the end of those story boards.

Reminds me of the Star Brigade mech actually. I think the brand would have been doing pretty much the same thing (maybe with a slight difference here or there) if this movie had been made.

Truly an awesome artifact, thank you for posting it kiddreams

Good point, Tolan. I have never heard of any of those companies other than Warner Brothers, so I had no idea. Giant robots or not, that would have been a crazy awesome movie for that budget if it were animated. That's insane.

I wonder if it had anything to do with the space theme originally slated for 1989 or so (from information on yojoe.com's pre-production page).

guys that wasnt animated, it was clearly a live action movie, the letter in the last pic mentions a 1 million budget to build and shoot the "juggernaut II" and also the director attached to the project was peter macdonald, who was the director of rambo 3 and never ending story 3 those years, and he also was 2nd unit director in some unknown movies called wolverine origins, bourne ultimatum, harry potter 1,2 and 3, batman and robin, batman 1, rambo 2, dragon slayer, excalibur and something called EMPIRE STRIKES BACK... so no animated AT ALL lmao

Thanks for checking it out. Glad you guys dig it. Yeah, I'm pretty sure this thing was not going to be animated. There is some pretty harsh language in the script itself. There is some other material that I didn't have framed. There is an 11 page script breakdown and other notes I can probably post when I have the time.

This is definitely for a live action movie, not an animated one. The "Juggernaut" was a large battle robot that was essentially the "super weapon" that Cobra devised during the film. Ironically, so was "Serpentor".

It got to the script phase, and the script is out there if you look in the right places.

Yes it is truly as ridiculous as it sounds. Makes The Rise of Cobra look like Blackhawk Down.

kiddreams
02-07-2011, 08:58 PM
Yes, the script(all 126 pages) would need a lot of work to "make it". That's pretty much why we never saw this develop into a film. Maybe the future re-writing and developing this was going to need would have pushed them way over their inital budget.

pretty cool stuff, thanks for sharing! it's too bad the movie never did make the light of day. I would have liked to have seen this movie when i was a kid, no matter how 90's crappy it might have turned out. i personally enjoyed ROC, to some extent, but it just wasnt the same seeing a movie finally get made nearly 20 years after the first attempt.

i've got a copy of the 90's script and have read a little bit of it. guess i should sit back and read it while the weather is still stupidly cold.

Kirk Bozigan gave a presention at the Dallas Joe Convention on unproduced Joe movies. If I remember correctly, there were 7 different movie screen plays written in the 90's. All of them were bad. LOL. Kid's movie had a giant cobra robot named Serpentor Rex and the Joe's robot was Juggernaut.

It looks like this ended up becoming Robojocks or whatever that movie was called where countries settled their wars or disputes by having giant robots controlled by a single pilot slug it out.

That was kinda fun, this as a Joe movie would not have been.

Still, a neat piece of history to have.

Sounds like live action to me just based on the cost. $900,000 to build something called the Juggernaut II definitely makes it sound live action.

Agreed, I don't see how anything in a 1990 animated feature would need to be "built," especially since I don't think CGI was used much in animation around that time (if it was used at all).

Anyway, thanks for sharing this document with us!

This is really cool I think.
Just the fact that G.I.JOE was being considered for a feature film at that time shows how good the 80's were.
The storyboard shown would be about 20 minutes of movie time maybe. Makes you wonder what the story would have been leading up to this battle.
Awesome.

actually there are plenty of indications that it was a live action concept.

the director was a live action director. it states the studio it was to be filmed at. they discuss the fx budget, which pertains to live action otherwise it would all be just animation back in the 90's. it states a principal start date, which refers to principal photography.

That script sounds awesome. The robots sound like the old Gobots power suits...pieces of the robot that people wear (called a "sleeve" here, apparently) that all combine into a big battle machine.

I would totally love this movie. It sounds VERY late-80s/early 90s. Get the rest of the script out so someone can make a fan-project CGI version or something!

The giant walking skyscraper robot is juggernaut 2. Each of those windows was a module that held one soldier. Each section was used to make up the whole with each section working a different part or something. Anyway, there was a tank bay in one leg and a helipad on top of one arm.
