Actually most of that Konami stuff was pretty off the hook, Castle Vania, Gradius...Contra just had incredible midi 8 bit awesomeness going on.

Awhile back when my band was recording some stuff, the engineer and I started BSing about video game sound tracks...and he was a bit out there but he said something I never forgot, he was all like "Ya know how we grew up in elementary music class talking about Mozart and Bach?...in 100 yrs the composer's to those NES games will have chapters for the kids"

He might be onto something there.

Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, almost any of the first four Silent Hill games, Dead Space, MGS series, COD Black Ops (especially the samples of rock music used as Easter Eggs). There are lots to choose from.

IMO for video game music... context is everything. LOL.

I remember the boss battle was like at the top of the mountain or something and in the very beginning of the fight I was getting my butt wooped so badly, but then at around 40 seconds the song really takes off. The music totally re-energized me and even though I was almost dead I never gave up... and in the end I won... thanks solely to the music. LOL. Xenogears had the best video game music ever IMO.

Aerith's death is seared into my mind... it is a wound I have never truly healed from. LOL. And the fact that this sad music is playing as you are trying to take your revenge on the person that took your little flower girl away from you... EPIC. LOL.

3.) FFXIII "Battle Theme": YouTube - Final Fantasy XIII Battle Theme (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=39Cg92jbc88)

Same with the Xenogears music... this song really picks you up during battle. From 0:57 - 1:29... that's when the song starts kicking a** IMO. Like when I was fighting with Lightning I would intentionally hold back her special Army of One attack just to time it so she would unleash it at the same time as when that specific part of the music would start playing... that's how much I loved the music. LOL. Through 115 hours of gameplay I never got tired of hearing that battle music.
