View Full Version : Questions Foot pegs in dios?

I'm working on a dio with a rough surface (eventually to simulate a desert/sand ground area) and no figs want to stand without a stand on it. I remember seeing one snow dio on here where the guy had pre-built a few pegs here and there, so I'm wondering: is there some premade thing I can slice to the right length and pop in a drilled hole to use for foot pegs? I was thinking (hoping?) Lego light saber blades would work, but they're a hair too big... I suppose a thin dowel would work, but would prefer something plastic.
Any thoughts/ideas?

i might be that guy you are thinking of. i was going to use styrene tubing and styrene rod, recomended by the man above^^ but i didn't like the strength of it, so i used acrylic rod.. the down side is they only have a few colors to choose from, but it being acrylic, it might beable to be painted, i didn't bother painting em cus the icey blue ended up looking sharp against the white..

Ah, I swear I ran a search and didn't find anything! Thanks for the tips.
Where'd you get the acrylic rods from?
Edit: I see the web link in the other thread, but I'll probly take a look locally first. I'm sure the shipping is hell on these things.

i bought both styrene and acrylic so i could make a decision in person, but the shipping wasn't bad, they are light .. you should go to micheals and get a miter box and miter saw too, it will make things easier to cut..

Depending on the surface you can also hide the stands so the peg just shows. That's what I usually do with mine. In my River Crossing diorama I had to bury the stands in the sand of the creek to keep them from falling in the current. Just paint a few the color you need and they will barely show if you do the shots right. Unclassifieds method is much better for a permanent fixture though.

my original method for a desert dio i did, was bury the stands, but came to a problem when glueing the sand down, it effected the peg itself and didn't work that good. that's why i reinvented my first method to the one for the snow. this will be the way i do it now on. depending on the surface that you are applying it to plays a big part. i went through a few different things to make it adhere. i tried spackle, crazy glue, elmers, some stuff worked on the pegs and not the material i glued it to, and some adhered on the surface/material and not the peg. til i found out the secret, and it worked perfect.. i can't tell the secret though..
lol, nah wtf i will.
model glue.. it worked so damn great.. remember my surface was that foamcore stuff, so it was tough trying to get something to work the way i wanted it to..
figuring out the depth of the peg for the foot and then the depth of the surface is trial and error.. you want the bottom of the peg submerged enough so it wont wiggle or pull out, but also want the peg to be perfect height for the foot so it sits level..
my surface was around a 1/4 inch thick so it had to be placed in it as deep as it could be,.
i'm shooting this out there for the op, not you ant, just using your post as something to base it off of..

Yeah, I'm using plywood as a base, with a textured spraypaint that's supposed to look like aged sand/metal on it. So I figured I'd drill a hole in the wood then put a section of the plastic tube in, mark it, then cut it & then put it back in. I'm working on molding some brick walls, I'll post something in the other forum when I have something closer to a work in progress. Right now its just some plywood that's been spraypainted and about 2" of ceramic wall, haha.

ok, 3/32 is the size you need, i'm sure you got that already, what i did was stick the peg in the foot, mark it with a pencil and then leave some left over for the surface. you have plywood, so you either got 1/2 inch or 3/4 either way that would be enough for the remainder to have some support. and yes, get a bit that is the same width as the peg and you should be fine. i would use testors modeling glue, you can get that anywhere, that should adhere great to wood.. i can't wait to see some pics, man.. when i did my desert dio, i used real sand from home depot, it was like 4 or 5 bucks for a 50 lb bag. and i got a spray bottle and mixed elmers and water, and sprayed, layered it with sand, shook off the excess, and continued.. your best bet is to get your turf done first then add the pegs, you don't wanna add the pegs and then add the turf, you most likely will lose some of the peg..
