CYCLE ARMOR•ASHIKO

So here we are again... ASHIKO and the CYCLE ARMOR. Before we begin, here is a link to a previous Ashiko review I did:

Okay first things first... the finished product is more stable than the test-shot (as expected, and as hoped for). The pieces stay in a bit better for the most part. However, the chest-wings don't seem to clip-in-then-extend quite properly, although this might just be a factory error on my sample. The sample in my pics came out of the box. HOWEVER PART 2: this thing still has no playability in armor form. It still can barely balance on its own, it still tends to fall apart while you're putting it together or moving it around or putting a piece back on that popped off. The arms are still barely movable once armored-up. It is still top heavy and I think it needs a stand. Some sort of stand or some sort of support system. I don't think anyone would complain if this thing came with some sort of big, maybe even city-strike-themed support base that kinda half served as a mini dio a bit similar to what some spawn toys come with etc. I dunno... Just a thought. The Armor has no pegs so it'd have to be specific to this toy. But as I said, the finished version IS more stable than not so that's good. Also there have been some tooling changes since the unpainted test-shot... one we already knew about thanks to notpicard's painted test-shot of Ashiko: the Wraith head was replaced with ROC Flash.
However, until now I don't think we were aware that there are new and longer handle-bars (although the chest ports STILL get in the way of things when posing Ashiko on the bike). Also the 'back pack'-thingy that holds the wheels on etc in Armor form, has new strap holes AND the back pack has a peg that goes into the back of Ashiko... something my unpainted test-shot did not have (as pictured LATER below)... and so my unpainted sample, in Armor mode, the pack was free-balling it and that caused a LOT of the problems with balance and parts staying put. So that peg REALLY makes this thing a bit more stable.

On this finished version, Ashiko's helmet is all black (not sure why they didn't paint the visor or give it racing stripes or something). It's the same helmet that was going to come with Night Force Chuckles and the Silver Mirage (as pictured later below). There's a strange little Easter Egg/??? in the fold out diorama (which I've pointed out in the pics) of the HISS Scout gun. The biggest surprise of all was the shit load of weapons Ashiko comes with.
While taking pictures and comparing things... it occurred to me how cool it would be if the Armor was cast in a clear color (a la Clear Wraith) so you could see Ashiko inside. I think clear Armor
in yellow or even blue like Wraith would be &*&*$&$ing awesome. A stealth bike and energy armor, if you will. All in all,
this finished version has improved my overall opinion of this concept. It's very much a display piece though. But it is definitely
much cooler than I expected it to be after having done all those reviews etc last year and this year. I mean I've always liked it or wanted to like it... but now in-hand, I'd say it's a definite buy despite the short-comings. So what I've tried to do is take some fun pics... and give Ashiko a decent night out on the forum.

That thing is badass looking. And CS Scarlett goes so well with him, too. I plan for two. I kept an extra Wraith head around just to have a second rider look like the original proto.

I like the dio.
But never, ever will this transform into Voltron in my Joeverse.
It will remain a bike.
A lesser known bike, perhaps the bastard child to Footloose's Huffy, and the children will chase Ashiko w/ Lego parts, but it is a bike.

Pretty much. This is an easy pass for me but I bet it would strike interest in kids. It is gimmicky so they might dig that. Hopefully they will actually. This is just an assanine GI Joe product IMO. With what goodness they have given us figure wise there is much to be desired vehicle wise with the POC line. At least they did new stuff though. You don't know until you try.

HASBRO: Let's put all of these cool ideas into a hat and have a monkey randomly pull some out to see what we get. Ok, first item is "ninja". Good one, everyone loves ninjas. Up next is "cycle speedster". Now we have "fully armored". Monkey's losing interest, let's try to get a couple more grabs from him. Hand us the next item from the hat monkey....ok, now we have "transformer". One more, c'mon monkey what did you pick last, ah good one "exo-skeleton". I totally would buy Ashiko as a carded fig. I like the Wraith a lot, so a "good" Wraith is even better...just look at all that equipment!

And the bike itself...i love the general look. I like how it looks in bike mode, and how it looks in armor mode, the Robotech homage is obvious (at the other PoC homages)...i'm not sure about poseability, but since i don't play with them, i shouldn't care lol.

I'm totally sold.


(btw, i think a clear variant would be great. This could have been released instead of sandstorm and the regular bike...)

I've loved this strange wonderful toy ever since they first shown it off. I can't understand some of the negativity. I realize it's kinda outrageous, but to me this is so much more exciting a concept than yet another regular motorcycle. The alpha vehicles from ROC still litter many stores in my community, and we all probably saw some of the POC vehicles get clearanced out recently, so if Hasbro wants to see its smaller scale vehicle line survive they're going to start looking to innovative (for Joes) and fun ideas like this.

Initially i was very excited for this... last year. Since then Joe has improved and this seems out of place. It seems sillier than what we have been getting, even with mechs they seem more realistic. Overall I like the Cycle & figure, it's very Mospeada... which was a great 80's anime... I would have perferred a different head (seeing we have ROC Flash's head already on Skldive *this is like Clutch & Tomahawk again*) & for the file card not to ninja-fi him, not every Japanese guy in Joe-verse has to be a ninja... and am still hoping this makes retail as it's already been pushed back once.

This vehicle wave has been an utter mess. The hiss tank gets released in cockroach brown? Sorry folks, I was willing to get a Wolfhound at standard price, but the Hiss in that color? UGH. Had it been the basic black, I'd have bought it.

We get a random dreadnok on a freakin' tricycle, with afterthought handlebar guns, and some sort of silly engine blade nonsense that seems more like a Power Rangers gimmick. This clunker fills the shelves.
Meanwhile, the Silver Mirage mold goes back into limbo. While the Cycle Armor, a loving tribute to classic Japanese anime, gets lost in the backwash

We get two mechs, one of which is a conspicuous repaint of the other, with backwards knees and Rockem-Sockem spring loaded mace..And no other weapons to speak of...uh, yeah…
So after the Cobra mech has lobbed his ball and chain, well he can now draw fire away from all the Alley Vipers, I guess? This may be the Joker’s favorite distraction for Batman in Gotham, but it really doesn’t work for me.

And then we get the last two Bravo vehicles which go straight to discount retailers...

The figures for this wave have been great. The vehicles and their distribution? Mmm. Not so good at this point.


On the other hand, If this was a MORAY, or another classic of legend abandoned to the cold market, well then I'd be TRULY heartbroken.

I fail to see how it's Hasbro's fault if retailers aren't supporting the vehicles. They obviously didn't make the damn things planning to sell them at cost. If you have a beef then you need to contact whoever your local retails are and get on their asses to order. In any case I got my Vamp and Fury at BBTS.com ages ago, so it's not just Ross.

I actually have the Joe mech, and I contend that if not for the missiles, it too would be entirely insufficiently equipped. I still think that for both mechs they should have had swappable weapons, but in the absence of that, I felt that the arm choices for the Cobra mech were underwhelming.

Yeah, but when it comes to transformable vehicles, in Joe scale, ANY company fails. I remember the old Robotech veritch, I believe it was matchbox at the time (it was so long ago, I can't remember who put out those old 3-3/4s Robotech figs) the Veritech after it transformed looked horrid, but they were smart to put out a nontransformable Cyclone cycle, and the Zentraedi mechs.

Actually..I hope Hasbro DOES get the Robotech toy license because then it might enable TakaraTomy to do the engineering....and while TakaraTomy is different than Yamato, they are far more experienced in designing transforming toys than Toynami.

Realistically though, big transforming stuff in Joe scale, like the alphas(bringing that up because it's the smallest one listed), is still wishful thinking, I don't think there is enough faith in the brand to push out something like that. Maybe years from now IF GI Joe is popular again with the masses and is in high demand.

Hasbro has not officially stated that this thing is canceled, so so far, no. The fact that we are seeing boxed samples of these is a good sign, we haven't seen much of the 2011 Mech Suits outside of loose samples and the cons last year.

Having said that however, the last wave of POC bravos bypassed regular retail chains and flew straight into ROSS. One determining factor could have been that Target did not carry any bravo POC vehicles therefore Hasbro lost out on being able to push out bravo vehicles from their factories quicker.

The alphas, unlike the bravos, are in mass market stores. Wave 2 from last year also showed up earlier than I expected. So who knows at this point, by in my opinion I think there is a 50/50 chance we will see the 2011 alphas at ROSS.

Melt the figure with a butane torch. The bike, pretty cool but as some others have said, I would keep it as just a bike. The accessories, cool for customizing figures. The transforming/armor gimmick can rot. I would pick one of these up on clearance for the accessories and bike but for no other reason.

Nope..I agree. What I imagine as being great, many now a days feel old. I just know what I like to see in Joe..this isnt quite it. If it truly transformed, it would be one thing..but this is a bag of parts. That you can put all together and make either a bike or something the guy wears.

the snarler cycle isn't retarded, it's a pretty cool bike (besides the name), much better than the Target ninja crotchrockets. I use the snarlers for Cobra, they look really cool with alley-vipers (the resolute helmet and goggles on 2 AVs on the snarler with sidecar reminds me of WWII german troops).

this thing here I would prefer strictly as a futuristic bike but that alone isn't worth $17 especially with a crappy figure, would buy it for $10 maybe

You know...the MASS clearancing of joe stuff has just killed my full price purchasing. When I was buying ROC figs that I passed on for 88 cents, and Snake Armors for $3, I SWORE to Myself, Zues, and any other entity that matters that I was done buying Joe vehicles until they make something I REALLY want.

All this ROSS crap (And YEA its CRAP...ITS BULLSHIT cause there aint none by me) just reinforces my opinion. With SOO many repaints these days, clearances, and items that guys spent a ton for thinking it was rare, and to have it show up at a damn DIME store pisses me off.

I'll just stand back, buy the few things I Like, and wait for the 4 repaints, and pick the one i LIKE....

The Bike ISNT bad...it just does NIETHER well enough for me. As a bike it looks funky, and a mech suit it sure as hell dont look right, I mean..at least Scott Bernard was actually covered from shrapnel and frag..

Looks to be a fun toy. Is it an Armored Cyclone homage? Sure. I think it works, though- the Joe-verse has always been primarily military, but with strong doses of sci-fi, so I think it fits int he Joe-verse. I just don;t know why they felt the need to make him another Arashikage ninja- keep the number of ninjas to a minimum- it makes them more mysterious and interesting.

I agree. It would be more fun if he was the youngest son of a Japanese family who had made their fortune in cutting edge robotics research, and had spent years racing competitively in his spare time. Perhaps the death of a family member as the direct result of Cobra intrigue involving an attempted theft of his family's technology inspires him to revenge, and Snake Eyes encounters him at some point in Japan and steers him in the direction of working with the JOE team. Now that's a story I can work with.

I'd be VERY curious to see what a Cobra 'Cycle Armor' character would look like. The whole time I was watching Tron Legacy I kept thinking about Ashiko. Maybe the Cobra character wouldn't be a cycle... kinda like how most of the main Autobots are ground assault and a chunk of the Decepticons are air assault etc.
