Just got a PS2 and was wondering if anyone had suggestions on what game to get for it. I know it's old but it might have one of the largest game libraries ever for a console system.

I'm more a strategy gamer than action but any suggestions would be appreciated.

I still play these two from time to time. Ring of Red: A turned based mech game

The Resident Evil titles were fun. Grand Theft Auto 2. And most of the Guitar Hero games if you're into that.

Wow. I just bought Sly Cooper 2: Band of Thieves used for like $3 and it is REALLY awesome. It kind of plays like Assassin's Creed... except you're a raccoon. LOL. But it is open world, and you are a thief and like you have to run along of the rooftops of houses and everything.

And it is cool because with a push of a button there will be like a bat symbol spotlight so that wherever you are in the city you will know where both your next destination and your home base is.

I read on the internet that Sly Cooper 2 is the only one that is truly open world though... Sly 1 & 3 are both more linear in their gameplay.

It's not strategy, but Black is an awesome game. The enemies look like Cobra nightwatch, shock troopers and alley vipers.

If you're a Dragon Ball Z fan then the "Budokai Tenkaichi" series is the single greatest, tightest, most epic fighting game (with rpg elements to boot) ever made. If not, stay the hell away, you'll be lost not knowing who these hundreds (yes, you read that right) of characters are or why Perfect Cell fighting Brolly is almost too awesome to believe. Worth mentioning though if only for the fact you can let loose with attacks that can actually blow away entire sections of the planet your fighting on.

Capcom vs SNK 2 is also the greatest retro 2D fighter ever made for fans of SF2 or KoF. Accept no substitutes.

Dragon Quest VIII is probably one of the greatest JRPGs ever made (certainly for that system) and stunningly beautiful in a bright cartoony kind of way.

If you missed them on the next gen systems "Force Unleashed" and "Wolverine: Origins" are both amazing plays in terms of action. God of War 1 & 2 are pretty jaw-dropping in places.

Fight Night Round 3 is actually better on the PS2 than the next gen systems (they actually give you less options in the character creation system on the X-Box 360 "upgrade"), and I don't think the first-person mode makes up for it).

If you're a hard-core strategy nut then I recommend "Romance of the Three Kingdoms VIII". It helps a great deal if you've read the books (or have a crazy amount of knowledge of ancient Chinese history), but it give you almost unlimited scenario options from everything from the emperor to a humble vassal or even the leader of a mercenary band raiding the countryside gaining money and strength to take on a lord for their territory and become a major player. Be warned, the graphics are closer to SNES level than PS2, but the scope is mind-boggling.

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas
Nuff said.

Let me echo Shin and the Ace Combat series. I'll add Gran Turismo as my 2 cents to the discussion.

MGS 3 is an absolutely amazing game that you can play for hours at a time. Shadow of the Colossus is a pretty unique experience and very worth playing. X-men Legends 2 and Marvel Ultimate Alliance are also fun, especially if you play with a friend. Those were some of my favorites.

I'm kind of hooked on the Suikoden series when it comes to PS2 gaming, though I've recently taken my first foray into the Tales series. Huh, I guess on the PS2, most of my experience is with RPGs and not so much with strategy.
