I used to be a big star wars collector from the potf time in 95-97 all the way through revenge of the sith, Then i traded my entire collection at my comic shop for store credit to buy more joes. The past couple of weeks i have been collecting some of what is left of the 30th anniversary figures and the unleashed 2" figures. I never knew they had that much articulation now. WOW! the old kenner potf stuff from the 90's was terrible compared to this. Now i want to start collecting star wars again but im afraid i have come in on the tail end of the 30th line and wonder if star wars will continue. I really want to rebuild my collection. I want to get some classic stuff like tie fighters, x-wings, the falcon, does anyone know if i can expect to see any of this stuff?

Hello. I've been collecting Star Wars figures for years now, and just in the past year tapered off a bit. I've noticed this Xmas more Star Wars items than ever before. There is a rumored new Millenium Falcon coming out this year, as well as several other vehicles. This is indeed a good time for you to begin collecting Star Wars. Also, Entertainment Earth had the TRU exclusive X-wing fighter on sale( they may still have it) So classic vehicles shouldn't be a problem to obtain. Good luck.

I don't think they made any. Tough it would be a cool idea. The only smaller vehicles I can think of is the Titanium series. These would be way too small for the unleashed Battlepacks.

The Millenium Falcon is rumored to see a SERIOUS revamp later this year, we're talking a $100-$150 release here.
The basic TIE and Darth Tie vehicles are still being rotated in and out of the vehicle assortments, and will be for a while.
Most of the vehicles have been store exclusives, TRU got the AT AT a couple years ago, Target got the Imperial Shuttle last year, so you can expect many to cycle in over the next few years.
Hasbro has full plans to continue Star Wars for a good while yet to come, so even if you miss stuff, they will probably reissue it before too much longer.

Hasbro tried doing larger playset deal for the 2" line, but those flopped big time at retail. The only ones to hit retail were a HOTH Turrent and a Snow Speeder set
( Snow SPeeder (http://www.rebelscum.com/sw06unlBOH_BS-SA.asp) ).
As is, I'm astonished to see the 2" line still supported by Hasbro, and don't expect it to remain too much longer into the future.

Same here man, but it is Star Wars, and you know what all the manufacturers say, "nothing compares to star wars", which equates to "star wars can get away with damn near everything that other lines can't".
After TAC, the Force Unleashed, BAD(Build A Droid) waves, and Clone Wars waves will come out. Big ticket items this year are the AT TE and retooled Millenium Falcon(1 or both are rumored to have a 20 figure capacity).
Basically, think 2007 on steroids.

As a star wars maniac, i hope that Hasbro gets off their asses and do something cool with this line. Make everysinle obscure charcter, make more of the classic style sw toys at a cheaper non-$10 price, and make some better articulated versions of the major charcetrs *cough*jedilukeskywalker*cough*.

Yeah, hopefully the do something similar to these GI Joes.... these half jacked articulated figures suck. They may look nice but if you can't pose them, whats the use?
Stop repackaging the same figures into another package!

What becomes of the Star Wars line after the 30th?
An eternity of repacks and repaints.

I wonder sometimes what a repack actually looks like while it's happening. Do you think there is a big warehouse somewhere in China where tons of unsold figs and vehicles wait until being brought out for some poor shlubs to unpackage and then repackage into new cards and boxes and such?

i also collected star wars like mad from the POTF 2 line and trickled off after ROTS. mostly due to moving to japan... star wars figures are twice the price in japan, and on base we only get like 1 case semi-annually.
i'm extremely confident we will continue to see SW product for the next... decade or two? i mean, its gone 30 so far, why not another 30? hey, its possible...
in addition to what was already mentioned for the future of SW figures/vehicles... did we forget?
LIVE ACTION TV SHOW?!
i am positive this will yield INCREDIBLE figures!!!!
i mean, BOBA FETT: CONFIRMED! do we need any more convincing than that? :)
i just hope he hunts down at least a couple jedi during the show. i needs me some lightsaber characters! oh and troopers. we all know hasbro loves to give us troopers!
as for the crappy articulation, i think what's going on there is hasbro trying to keep star wars figures looking like STAR WARS figures.
if they gave them the same articulation as joes... wouldnt that blur the lines a bit?
it sucks, but i'm pretty sure thats why they have stuck with T crotches for sooooo long.
and dear god if that rumored falcon makes it to stores... im actually salivating just thinking about it! i still have my POTF falcon sitting right over me on fishing line right now (i trust my knots! lol), and i would never get rid of it. but this new one would totally be my default smuggler ship!
(please, hasbro... give us a walkway from the cockpit to the crew's lounge, and realistic gunner stations! good try with the OTC re-issue though. the lights were great. i nearly bought one but $50 was a bit steep for a falcon that still had so many problems.)
like the sign said at C4... "STAR WARS IS FOREVER"
or as i like to think of it... "The Force(TM) will be with you... ALWAYS."
yeah, i may get sucked back into collecting SW basic figures again. i moved on to other things like prop replicas (FX sabers) and 12 inch figures (medicom and sideshow). but i just recently made a few basic figure purchases. those mcquarrie figures are irresistable!!!

Its actually because of budget, the more articulation, the more it costs to produce. You've noticed that Star Wars has much more releases annually than any other action figure line. If all of them had gijoe articulation, there wouldn't be as many figures making it out. The new Commander Gree I think, actually has gijoe type articulation including ball jointed hips, even ball joint wrists.

Alright, so i had just about given up on the star wars lines until i went over to rebelscum.com and saw about a mail away figure. I thought it was interesting and still no pic just like the indy mail away. I considered buying 4 figs to get it but i was more focused on the joes right now... Well all that crap changed this mourning after i dropped my two oldest off at school. i walked into wal mart and of course no frickin joes. look at the star wars, nothing special. Was about to leave and BAM! a whole endcap of star wars. so i mosey over there look aorund and there are more frickin repaints than i could count. But 3 stood out. Shadow Trooper, Utapua Shadow Trooper and the Covert Ops trooper. All three exclusives to some club or con. All 3 i was not able to get as many as i wanted. But now i have 10 of each. My wife is pissed and i think im sleeping on the couch tonight...and maybe tomorrow as well. Has hasbro sucked any one else back into star wars?

I never left Star Wars, has been & always will be my favorite toy line, followed by Joe's & Indy. There is a pic of the Star Wars mail-away. It's done in that new anime style, although the fig's are 3 3/4, but I'm not going to get any of the anime style fig's. But I will be getting the vehicles. Yeah the last wave of the Saga Legends is all fig's that were either exclusives or vehicle pack-ins.

I've really set my mind to gettings figs i really 'want' as opposed to everything (but I did get 3 darktroopers at toys r' us one day... felt sort of like a jerk buying them all.... but they are happily keeping watch over legion of the Emporer's best) The capt Neo is a pretty cool one you should check out too.

I finally found some of the carded shadow troopers the other day too. I've seen the same ones on ebay for a few months now, so I don't know why it has taken so long for them to show up at retail.
I guess I collect Joes more than SW, but I do really like both. I had many of the older POTF2 figures back in the late 90's, then got into the clone troopers later. I don't like many of the other figures from the prequel trilogy, but the clone troopers are awesome.

Yup. I stopped collecting the small figures for the most part once Sideshow started doing the 12" figs. But some of the detail and articulation really got me back into them. The newest Obi and Anakin have ball jointed hips, which is new for Star Wars. The Evolutions Qui-Gon rocks! I even started customizing them again, and added Anakins ball jointed hips to him, which made it even better...along with a new paint job, Hasbro for some reason likes to kill heads with wierd eye paint, look at Indy!
This is a pic of him with my custom Episode I Obi-Wan....

nice lighting on the pic too.
star wars... yeah i'm losingintrest int he 3 3/4ths line.
but i still look to see if anything catches my eye.
i think the falcon is going to be my last big purchase.
i'm going to thin down my collection. choosing one definitive version of each character (okay its tough with luke in like 50 different outfits... but you get what i mean)
i also agree that sideshow 12 inch is much more appealing to me lately. have there been any announcements for new sideshow figures? i know they are pretty busy with indy and joes now, but some new SW characters would be nice. maybe an endor leia? exclusive pack in could be an extra helmet/poncho for ROTJ luke? would be rad.
but as for right now, when i look at SW toys on the pegs all i can think is "meh..."

I really wish we could see more 25th as much as SW figures.
But what if we see a Terror Drome for $150? Will we wait until it goes on cleareance?? Hells no!
USAgent
07-30-2008, 02:46 AM
I think chances of clearance are pretty slim. Remember that Hasbro has recently been anti-clearance (not that some stuff didn't get thru w/the target exclusive vehicles) But chances are that when the sales slip they'll pull it off the shelf then re-release w/ESB figures and sounds... followed by ROTJ figures and sounds. Hasbro could keep running that for a while yet. I can't recall ever seeing the old M.Falcon on clearance unless it was a discount Kaybee toys or something (but they may have only been $50 to begin with)... And yes, someone always pops up with a great deal somewhere... but if you dig it, don't chance it being gone. By the way:it is pretty freakin' sweet :)

Certain markets will see them sell more briskly than in other parts of the country. I doubt that the toy will go clearance across the country but there may be certain stores who decide to slash the price to get rid of it... I can see Hasbro re-packaging the monster again later in the year and/or tweaking its contents to move it for Christmas sales. Isn't this what happened when Unicron finally became a figure? I seem to remember seeing that toy in several different Transformers packages...
My Wal-Mart has like 12 of them. That's a lot of stock for a $150 playset.

I just noticed something about all of us. I believe that we're stuck in the mindset of how fast Joe product sells now days that we've forgotten that toys used to sit on shelves for months at a time before being bought (Except for around X-Mas time)
I mean the Falcon hasn't even been out a week. I'm sure most of the hardcore Star Wars collectors got theirs at TRU when it had it's midnight madness and for those that didn't have a TRU to hit, they probably bought one at Wal-Mart. I'm also sure that there were people who have to wait till this Friday because they may only get paid every two weeks. I know that at the midnight madness I went to, there were 5 to 10 of those Falcons sold (I couldn't get an exact count, but I know they sold all of them they had on the display island)
miscreant
07-30-2008, 11:26 AM
My guess is retailers are smart enough to know that $100+ toys don't sell that quickly, and that most are willing to wait until Xmas or beyond in an attempt to sell most if not all of them at full retail.
Isn't this what happened when Unicron finally became a figure? I seem to remember seeing that toy in several different Transformers packages...
Unicron is/was a lot cheaper than the new Millenium Falcon.
(The toy was repainted for the Energon line, and now that you mentioned it, will be reissued as a store exclusive in Universe)

Exactly. Also the fact it's so close to the new school year for kids, parent's aren't exactly going to be shelling out a $150 for a toy when that money can go to new school clothes & supplies. The interest is there, because since the BMF hit, kids have been showing a interest in it. All the Target's, WM's and TRU I've hit, kids who wanted one were told, "wait till X-Mas" and some of the older collectors were like "this upcoming payday, I'm getting one"-myself included. Sales are good in my area for the BMF, one Target and 2 WM's are sold out and TRU only has 2 left.

Hey, I wasn't suggesting this thing will go to $50. No, I was suggesting that it drop by $50 to $100. That would be a breaking point to me. That would get me to buy it. It's psychological. If I think I'm getting a deal, I might get it.
But if I do, then it will drag me into Star Wars collecting. 'Cause how can you get the Millenium Falcon without Luke, Leia, Old Ben, Threepio, and R2-D2. And how can you have the Heroes of Yavin without Vader and Storm Troopers. And how can you have Vader without the Emperor . . . How can you have the Emperor without Royal Guards. . . And how can you have the Empire without giving safe haven to the Heroes with the likes of Lando and Bespin guards. And, UGH. I probably should just skip Star Wars. I need my money for when Marvel 3 3/4 come out.

I don't look at much else other than the Joe line when out in stores. But most items I see which are $20+ usually seem to keep the shelves warm and move when put on clearance. So items with a retail price of $100 or $150 seem to really be geared to the hardcore collector. Downside is that if more casual collectors don't buy these things it makes it less likely Hasbro will make more of the larger playsets in the future. It would be great if they made something in-between - maybe a $40-80 price point.
On the Joe side, the big question will be how the Ultimate Battle Pack Target exclusive sells this holiday season. Will they continue to undersupply demand by that time, or will the price cause these to sit a little more. Big difference from a $10 HISS tank.

if this were just antoher toy, i would not be concerned about the vast number of these sitting at retail stores in my area. this release had lots of advertising, a movie, etc. and they are still not selling well if at all in my area.
if hasbro can't pull this off, there is little chance a $100+ collector market gi joe toy will be done in mass market in my opinion. our best bet is for something on or after the joe movie release.
if the mf goes on sale or clearance i'll but one but i'm not spending $150 on it thats for sure despite knowing it's worth it. it's just too much money in this crummy economy with infaltion only getting worse.
overall, i have a very dim view of the success of these large sw items and even dimmer view for prosects of large joe items.

Gaelinic
Well if you just want the heroes of Yavin, wait for the "Passengers of the Millenium Falcon" battle pack! :) It has all 4 of those figures The rest of the figures though, you were supposed to collect over the last 10 years and have plenty to choose from now :D

Do kids still collect SW, or is it more collectors like the 25th Joe line? Anybody know the demographics on the SW lines?
My nephews still play with SW toys. In fact, SW is about the only toys they will play with. In their house it's either XBox or SW. Nothing else. Oh and they hate the 3 3/4" figures for some reason. The only SW figures they ever ask for or want to play with are those little galactic heroes. Very odd, the children of today are.

That's not clearance, that's promotional sale. It's for this week only.
Also, Walmart will match that and take off an additional 10%
Which is why one of my walmarts sold out of those quickly.

I agree with those who say it won't get clearanced 'til after Christmas.
The Wal-Marts here don't have them. But then again, two of the four Wal-Marts haven't even put out their Clone Wars stuff yet. Yeah.
They seem to sell but they don't fly from the shelves, either. We're just used to collectibles disappearing the same day they are put out.
I'm more of a Star Wars collector than Joe, and I haven't got the AT-TE or the Falcon yet. Am waiting on a bonus from work, so I'm glad they haven't disappeared yet.

I made money at xmas the last two years by buying the At-At's that were TRU exclusives for $99 and selling them for $150 to $200. I picked up two that were clearanced because the boxes were tore up for $70 and sold them for $170 with an accurate description of the damage to the boxes.
TRU could barely keep these things on the shelf, especially when they ran the "Spend $75, get $10 gift card" promos in November. People still spend big money on SW toys. This year might be different with the economy in the crapper though so who is to say if you will find them on clearance or if you will find them at all in November/December.
Also, possible candidate for black friday deal as well.

This is Hasbro's fault for putting all four lines in similar type packaging. I wouldn't expect any run of the mill employee at at WalMart to know the difference between the Clone Wars line and the Legacy Collection line.
The Clone Wars vehicles are in a white box with bluish Star Wars lettering as is the BMF so they probably allowed it.
As for the question about a register or customer service, I was at a self-checkout register and he was at a regular register when he was buying the BMF.

Well, that was a flop. The tip was not at all accurate. The person had apparently seen the $99.99 price tag for the AT-TE, and thought it was for the Falcon. Ugh. I scanned it, and it still came up $149.99. The hunt will continue...

It seems every year there is at least one massive Star Wars toy that comes out roughly around August. Two years ago it was the AT AT at Toys R Us. And boy in August those were everywhere. Come December, this $90 toy was up to around $250 on ebay and sold out everywhere. Same with the Star Wars Ultimate Battle Packs last year (in most areas) and the Star Wars Imperial Shuttle two years ago. I'm not saying the demand for the Falcon will be quite at that level but it is only August. It makes sense to have it out now. Sell a few to the collectors and hard core fans and get it in people's mind for the holidays. I remember as a kid seeing the USS Flagg and it was always like "wait for Christmas". Man those months were hard but it was worth it in the end!

The TRU is my area is being pretty slick right now. It could be a pure coincidence but with those 20% off coupons floating around until the 28th, they don't have any BMF's on the floor.
They had eight of them on the floor in the Clone Wars section on the 14th - the day before the first coupon went live and now suddenly they have none. It is possible that eight people bought them at the sale price that first day but I highly doubt it.
I am willing to bet that on the 29th, the BMF finds its way back in stock

Well as I suspected, the day after the second set of coupons for 20% off expired, my local TRU's amazingly got a shipment of 12 BMFs and 6 AT-TEs in and they were put on the shelf after having none for the two weeks the promotion was going on.
Now for all those who think this is coincidental, one of the BMFs they had before the coupon had the Chewbacca figure stolen from inside the plastic bubble and that is one of the 12 sitting inside the store right now.
Coincidence that two BMFs would have the same figure stolen or were these items pulled off the floor intentionally until the coupons expired? I vote for the latter
Also in stock the day after those coupons expired were: GI Joe Comic Pack Wave 5 (9 cases), Wave 9 figures (5 cases), GI Joe TRU 5-packs (Firefly, Crimson Guards, etc), WWE Classic Superstars 19 (4 cases), McFarlane 2008 NFL Legends (4 cases).
What a shipment TRU got when they had no coupons out on the market.

I agree also because the original price listed in the red is $149.76 and every WalMart I have seen that has the BMF has it for $149.00 or $149.99.
I wonder how the check out went because usually WM's clearance stuff will scan with the reduced price and there is no way that item was in the system as $32.00, it took a CSM to override the price and someone is probably out of job right now.

I agree, defiantly some shady activity here. Theres no way that the price would drop KNOWINGLY from $150 to $32 that quickly WITHOUT it even dropping to a higher price first.
It's always possible that someone perhaps missed the #1, and maybe meant to put into the computer $132? Either way, there's a reason why no one else has found it for $32. Was either an error that wasn't caught or done intentionally by (a) or multiple shady employees.

As the person who bought all three this week in Norman, OK.
I can ASSURE you - there was NOTHING shady about the deal at all.
They are in the middle of a re-model and were in the process of moving the Toy section. As such, they had a section of clearance stuff and were in the middle of weeding out the markdowns from the not-markdowns. The three BMFs were sitting there and she had not got to them yet, so I asked. I figured they would be $100 or maybe $75.
She scanned it and confirmed that they were $150 and said something about $75. Then she asked me what was half of $75. I nearly gagged. She then said - "oh yeah... $32.50" and priced them up. She even said "they are gonna hate me when I do this, but they did say 75% off...".
According to here scan gun, the Falcons were "non-replenishable" and thus able to be on clearance. The AT-TE's also in the store were "replenishable" and were NOT a part of the clearance. The pricing sticker was done by the lady manually right as we were speaking. I have no idea if it was 149.76 or not - that's what she put on them when I was sitting there.
For the last two weeks - most of the SW stuff which came out a few months back for the CW Promotion have been sitting on their original display pallets at this store. They've been moved back and forth during the whole remodel process. While they had space for everything else in their new layout - someone either wanted to get rid of the stock or was just too lazy to move the Falcons and they simply put them on these "clearance shelves". I've seen all sorts of wierdness these past two weeks over in this area. Yesterday it was loaded to the gills with suitcases and carryon bags - ALL at 75% off.
Simply put. If they don't have the space for it - they are getting rid of it - QUICKLY.
I've been collecting for over 15 years now and totally resent the insinuation that I would have somehow conspired to rip this store off. I don't play the game that way - never have and never will.
As someone else said - it was just a once in a lifetime deal.

Seriously, though, the reason behind why they were clearanced (nonreplenished item) makes sense in a smaller Wal*Mart where they may never get another MF in stock...
Why are some folks having so much trouble with this score? Sometimes you get a good deal. It doesn't automatically mean it's a shady deal. I admit that I'm jealous that it wasn't me that got the deal but I applaud him for being in the right place at the right time. Bravo! :)

Why is it so hard to believe that something like this "could" be shady. Do we personally know you and your intentions? I didn't read all of these pages and don't care to, but regardless of YOUR situation and what happened with you by someone looking from the outside on in it's certainly plausible that something "shady" happened. It's not as if this is happening all over the place. It's an isolated incident and things of that nature raise suspicion.
On the same token I have no reason NOT to believe you as well, if that's how you say you got em'..... then i guess that's how you got em'.

I'm assuming that your comment is sarcastic due to the replies that you've been receiving, but again I'm sure you realize that due to the rarity of what happened it's only normal for people to question it.
If what you say is true, and I'm sure it is, you've provided a receipt and such I'm sure we all would of done the same thing. It's the stores fault for marking them down as low as they did and you simply capitalized on it. At the end of the day it means nothing to them and alot to you, Gratz on the pick-up.

What do you expect-- Wal*Mart doesn't hire rocket scientists and Ph.D. candidates... :)
Just because someone works at a Wal-Mart doesn't mean they are an idiot. I used to work there when I was going through college and so did a lot of the people I worked with at the time, so yeah, I'm sure they have hired Ph.D candidates in the past. They just didn't stay long after they got their degrees (hopefully). If you want a regular middle class job that pays a decent enough wage, the department managers can do pretty well for themselves, especially the ones that are good at it. Sure there are a lot of dumbasses working retail, but there's a lot of other smart people that work at stores like Wal-Mart as well.
Seriously, though, the reason behind why they were clearanced (nonreplenished item) makes sense in a smaller Wal*Mart where they may never get another MF in stock...
There are a lot of items in stores that are non-replenishable. It doesn't mean the store needs to clearance them off after not selling them after about a month or so. Sometimes items are marked non-replenishable only because they can't order them at a store level, but they could certainly get more of them from a corporate level.
I'm not in any way criticizing the person who bought them or saying it's shady at all, I'm just saying it's a pretty unique occurrence that shouldn't have happened from the stores point of view.

Hey, just so you guys know, it's not unheard of to get Walmart employees to drastically discount their products. Just last Tuesday, I found two 12" Halo 3 figures on the top shelf just lying there, waiting for a display. I took them to the scanner and they didn't come up. I took them to the cashier and they didn't ring up. They called the Toy Department, had someone go back there, and came back and told me they were $7.88. Sold one on ebay today for $46 plus $13 shipping. The other one is going up before the day is out.

I never picked up one of the older models and thought I'd get one this time around for my clones, but the gunship is a whopping fifty bucks and the ARC is $45. Is re-using an old mold that expensive?
For that price they might as well include some figures and a tube of astro-glide!

Man, i think Lucas and Hasbro have lost their minds with the price of the star wars vehicles. $25 for a little fighter, $40 for a tie fighter or a Bwing, $50 for the gunship, $100 then $150........gimme a break. Who do they think is buying this shit? sure, there are the die hard collectors that would pay anything for whatever they shit out, but what % of the target market do they make up? The average collector is joe schmo lower middle class or upper lower class making $30,000 a year maybe. The average family of 2 makes $50,000 - $60,000 and thats really pushing it. How do they expect anyone to affor anything? The prices for toys are getting way out of hand. I remember going to the toy store with my parents and if they gave me $10 i was in fat city. I was eyeing the A-wing as well, until I saw the price. I have done extremely little to none in the SW department for many years now. All the really good figures (Darth Revan, the Force Unleashed figures, Shadow troopers, to name a few) were always too hard to find, as in nonexistant, at retail. And the ebay prices for them, forget it. What I don't understand is why the A-wing is priced higher, $30, than the other ships, like all the Jedi starfighters, $20, that have been coming out in droves these last few years. And it's not just a couple dollars higher, that's a 50% markup!

When the ARC fighter, Gunship, and A-wing were a mass retail release a few years ago, they were cheaper. Store exclusives almost always cost more, which all 3 vehicles are. The other mass retail released vehicles are $19.99 at WM, $21.99 at Target, $24.99 at TRU, and $29.99 at K-Mart, so the retailer raises the cost as well.

You could be onto something there. Lucasfilm has a lot of say in how Hasbro does the toys, maybe too much for Hasbro's liking. I bet that they wish they had not paid all those millions to keep the license years ago. That was long before Transformer and GIJoe movies were in the works and Star Wars was their bread and butter line. Now, with the renewed Joe and Transformers interest Hasbro has their own in-house brands that they probably make more profit on and have complete control over. Star Wars is now a huge ankle weight for them.

The oil excuse doesn't hold water, as when the price first went up on joes and other toys, oil had just started to get to record levels and those toys were already produced...If that were the case, we should see a major drop come January on toys since oil is only $61 a barrel instead of $141. The oil and fuel reason was used to mark everything up by leaps and bounds..not nearly reflective of the real cost of production.

there is no price gouging going on at Hasbro no matter how much they charge for a toy unless you can prove the price is significantly more than it should be, which you can't.
the only reason to make such an accusation would stem from a sense of victimization by Hasbro as you don't want to pay as much for something you want as they want to charge. well, guess what, don't buy it if you don't like the price. if you are so compelled to buy toys, regardless of the price, than that is your choice. but either way, you aren't a victim in the scenario.
this ridiculous price gouging argument is becoming just as bad as crying about scalpers.

guys, there is no way Hasbro is "trying to kill" Star Wars, especially if its been one of their biggest lines for awhile now. If you were dealing with someone on an individual level that was a pain, then yes, you could just stop dealing with them. For huge companies like Hasbro, it's not that simple ESPECIALLY when you are making tons of money. Even if Transformers and G.I. Joe were to take over as Hasbro's top sellers, the Star Wars brand name would still mean a lot to investors.

everyone has their own opinion man. In all reality, the prices havent gone up too much since 1995 when they came out. Single cards were $4.99, vehicles were $20, larger vehicles went up to $80.
I think the mane problem stems from all the needs that we have overwhelming the wants. Prices for food, rent, gas, cars...etc has doubled and even trippled since 95 and most people still make about the same now as they did then. So with all those things we NEED so survive the $3 increase or $10 increase on something we WANT makes certain things hard to get. Sure you can do with out, but to some people toy collecting is the root of their happiness. So with that taken away by some bullshit price increase, or an overpriced exlcusive they are going to be unhappy and express that.
So a price increase or scalpers might not mean much, to some it really hurts. So some people are indeed a "victim" of these. And you know as well as anyone else that "gauging" takes place when the demand outweighs the supply. That $4.99 price tag had been around since 95. 13 years later when a hit toy line comes out the price mysteriously raises to $8+ on every line Hasbro has?? common man. I know we cant "prove" this kind of stuff, but its pretty obvious.
Cdt Weasel

The main reason for the items being higher priced is that they are exclusives. Fewer to sell, means a higher price to make a 'hasbro happy' profit. Along with whatever psychology they think will make people pay more for an exclusive item.

or coincidental to other factors. I don't think a $3 increase in price over 13 years is that ridiculous of an increase.
but don't make any mistake, demand will never outweigh supply with toys, there are plenty of units available to all. just because they are hard to find at retail doesn't mean they don't exist in large enough quantities.

$3 isnt bad at all, i make good money so it doesnt really affect me. but to someone making minimum wage scraping by it might hurt them.
The companys hold back supply to create a hype. It slike the Wii, the Xbox, The PS3...and so on. It just creates a gigantic hype for the items, then they can keep the same price tag for longer periods or raise the price and justify it to the ignorant out there.

Also in 1998 figures were 7.99 everywhere for TPM and then for a long while they were 6.99 POTJ and for Ep2 they went down a bit only to raise to 6.99 to 7.99 for the OTC collection finally with ROTS they were a measily 4.99 to 5.99 at Target and Wallmart to be raised in 2006 at 6.99 and have been on a 50 cent increase/decrease ever since. So really its not like they were a cool 4.99 since 1995 and all the sudden last night they were raised to 7.99 we had this coming. Its when there 9.99 is when I will stop all together because no freakin ewok is worth more than ten dollars. Neither is any Viper worth more than ten dollars.

there is no price gouging going on at Hasbro no matter how much they charge for a toy unless you can prove the price is significantly more than it should be, which you can't.
the only reason to make such an accusation would stem from a sense of victimization by Hasbro as you don't want to pay as much for something you want as they want to charge. well, guess what, don't buy it if you don't like the price. if you are so compelled to buy toys, regardless of the price, than that is your choice. but either way, you aren't a victim in the scenario.
this ridiculous price gouging argument is becoming just as bad as crying about scalpers.
I'm sorry but there was far to much logic in that post. please edit.

Time will tell whether the $50 price tag was a wise move. Hasbro has repeatedly said that Star Wars is huge right now and they have the Clone Wars to help move product, but if it sits on shelves after Xmas, which may very well happen to the BMF and other ships, some things are gonna have to change. I just can't fathom the price for this gunship. Hasbro has said they love the $20-25 price range and since this is a larger vehicle I knew it would be more, but fifty is just a slap in the face. I'm not a victim because I haven't bought the damn thing, but I love when people defend everything Hasbro makes and says if you don't want to pay for it, don't buy it.
Yes indeed, people won't buy it and if Hasbro can't find enough people to buy it, the few who do aren't going to make up for the cost of production. Sure they can absorb a loss like the Indy line with other hot toys, but they're not going to keep doing it. There is an ideal market value for everything, and I don't think this is it.

Here is something real fun to think about: three years ago, I purchased the old MF for 24.99 at KB Toys (the most expensive toy story usually). The new design is somewhat bigger and has more features, but how do you justify it being $150? On the other hand, they are doing exactly what collectors have said - even on this site: giving people what they want who said they would pay whatever it cost to get the toy. This in no way is Hasbro trying to cash in before they "kill Star Wars" but rather trying to do what people ask. It just has a very high price tag. Something joe collectors might want to think about as they continue to beg for a Flagg that cost a fortune 20 years ago.

last gunship was a TRU exclusive from Clone Wars micro series and was $50 before that was widespread release of ROTS version which was $40
Really? I paid thirty for the Revenge of the Sith gunship and forty-five for the tiger stripped Clone Wars gunship.

I have been trying to find a cheap gunship for a custom. I have checked e-bay off and on for a about 8 months opened ones go for about $80.00. sealed for over $100. when I saw one for $50.00 at Walmart I bought it because I wasn't finding any for less than that. There were about 30 on the shelf, when I went back a week or 2 later there was 0. So they are selling pretty well. does it make me happy to pay that...no. but it was the cheapest I could find.

$3 isnt bad at all, i make good money so it doesnt really affect me. but to someone making minimum wage scraping by it might hurt them.
The companys hold back supply to create a hype. It slike the Wii, the Xbox, The PS3...and so on. It just creates a gigantic hype for the items, then they can keep the same price tag for longer periods or raise the price and justify it to the ignorant out there.
someone scraping by on minimum wage shouldn't be wasting money on toys, they need to be focusing on how to better their life and get out of minimum wage, so they aren't a good example of how to gauge a fair price.

I used to collect just Star Wars items and I did all right financially to pay for it. Then I started collecting JOE again and I wanted all the old stuff too. I used to collect 2 of each figure in both the JOE and SW line. One to keep sealed and an opener. I started going in debt. I realized I had to cut something. I stopped collecting 2 of each SW figure and only extras of the ones I wanted to add to my dioramas. However, the JOE figures were too super sweet so I have been buying 2 of each since the 25th line started. I bought the ARC-170, Lars Homestead, Republic Gunship, and A-Wing because I think they are super sweet! I realize they cost a lot, but they are excellent for dioramas. I started working another job to pay for my hobby addiction. I think Hasbro wants to make money off the items the fans want. I'm very happy to see them making things like the V-Wing, Rancor, Skyhawk, and Fang. Remember, if you don't want to pay the high price now there's a big chance you can get it cheaper when it's used. However, there's a few exclusives that hold there value or even go higher, so be careful with that. Anyway, I've said too much. Oh yeah, my official answer is Hasbro is not gouging, they are just delivering some sweet toys to the fans! YO JOE! MTFBWY!

You would think that they were... dare i say it... a business!
According to Hasbro the price of resin has gone up versus a year ago. Plus the Chinese yuan is up as well. Hasbro wants to maintain their margins for obvious reason, but they do care about their customers. It's tough to balance things in this economy.

could be man. I noticed Indy figs for $5 now, joes went down to $6.84 at target, Transformers went to $7.77 at walmart, and Star wars is still $7.99 everywhere i go. The vehicles IMO are very unreasonably priced. $10-$15 i can justify for the most part but $25-$150 is just insane. This line has been going on for way too long anyways. Everything has been re-hashed 30 times over. They just need to call it quits.
I agree the line has been going too long the original only ran from 78-85.
Remember how Hasbro ran the DC licence into the ground with their countless repaints of poor figures. They lose the licence to Mattel and pick up the Marvel licence and has since come out with some great stuff, the new 3 3/4" line is a good example.
The franchise needs fresh ideals not repaint after repaint.
On another note individual stores also have a lot to do with prices. I went to Knoxville today and at TRU single Joes were $7.99 and vehicles $19.99. At Target not too far away the same figs went for $6.99 and vehicles $15.99.

A trip to the toy store now is a $100+ adventure. Its bullshit
I couldn't have said it better myself, no I could but I agree. It's BS. It must suck to be a kid these days...

Supply and Demand.
SWs and Joe figures are selling very well for Hasbro and so are Marvel Legends. Since Demand is up, Supply goes up or slightly down and price goes up.
Simple economics.
Now I noticed the SWs figures have gone up a bit. Keep in mind that the new movie coming out, new figures and BAG droids have caused this. SWs are probably the only toys besides Marvel based figures and Batman figures to actually stay constant at toy stores for over a decade. TFs, Joes, Ninja Turtles....theyve all taken breaks from retail and ended up at comic shops as collector's but SWs have stuck around for well over a decade.
Personally....Im not dropping $50-$150 for any SW vehicle. I dont want them that bad. SW is "War" and having HUGE toys doesnt do you much good because if you go out and buy ANOTHER huge one....youre room is full of giant plastic dust collectors. But Hasbro shot themselves in the foot with $150 MFs, $50 walkers and the like. The only toys I see worth the money are the Titaniums and Jedi Starfighters - still only $20 (paid $15 for my Obi Wan when Ep 2 came out though...)

yes but my point was, no matter what store i go to Star Wars is the highest priced of any of the Hasbro lines.
Supply and Demand.
I put "supply and demand" in the same category as "gas crisis" and that category is called bullshit!
These are little tiny cheaply made super mass produced pieces of plastic. There is no shortage of supply. Hasbro holds back shipments to cause a stir and thus have a reason to justify the price hike. Same thing happens with video game systems on christmas. Its all bull shit and everyone buys into it.
ahhh and "gas crisis" dont get me started on that. funny how every other line stays the same price but hasbro line double? Heres the thing people, every single thing you use in your day to day life is a product of oil. Toys, Lamps, computers, medicine, bottles, bags, cups, plates.....EVERYTHING! though prices of household goods went up a tiny bit because now they cost more to ship, does anyone see Dove? or Crest? or Nyquil? or Foldgers Coffee? or any of that double in price? negative. Nor did any of these companys find any alternate means to store their goods. "gas crisis" my ass. Someone says something on TV and companys exploit it for profit.
A good example of that is Tickle me Elmo. Fat shit Rossie has it on her show saying how great it is, then everyone in America is willing to pay $500 for it. So what happened? The toy company raised the prices and cut the shipments back to create a stir and keep the prices high.

Damn man that was YEARS ago and every hot toy at Christmas is like that. Cabbage Patch dolls involved shootings, traveling cross the globe, etc etc
The idea if perfect. Supply and Demand. The more WE buy the HIGHER they raise the price. Why would you continue selling a widget for $3 when people REALLY want it? No, you raise widget to $3.50 and make more money.
People bitch about retail and dont understand that popularity effects price.
You can't have your cake and eat it too.

im not worried about the price hike personally. Im in a position now where a $3 hike wont affect me. But my concern is familys and less fortunate collectors. It just bugs me when i see greed overwhelm a group or class of people until they cant afford a certain luxury anymore.
And i know theres that group of people that says "tough, if you cant afford it then do without" and thats true to a certain extent, but everyone needs a little happiness in their lives. And to do without just isnt fair because a company needs to up the prices for no reason.
I understand business, economics, statistics, and blah blah blah. It just bugs me that something like toys is more and more becoming a luxury that most familys cant afford.

I'm not going to get involved in an argument, but everyone can agree, I think, that going from $4.99 to $6 or $7 or $8.99 in less than a year is a bit of a false inflation.

Joes were under $5 last half of 2007....up until about Feb or March.....
Price increases aren't great for us consumers. But Hasbro is a for-profit corporation. Any increase in raw materials, they'll want to pass it on to the customers. Plus, according to their CEO and CFO they are investing in emerging markets and in new technologies. That and the increase in raw materials have actually reduced their gross margins in the last year or so. That's the situation unfortunately. So I decided to buy their stock recently.

Remember last year before the holidays all the mass hysteria over lead paint in Chinese toys. Well maybe this price hike is do to that. The lead in the paint made it dry faster so they could produce more a day, plus having to redo paint department in a factory costs money.
I'm not saying any of the 25th line has lead paint in them, just out of habit I keep anything product made in unrestricted communist countries away from my mouth.
