View Full Version : scared of the Convention 25th molds

What I am the most scared of with the now permanent use of the 25th molds is:
1) Hasbro wont let The Club use the active molds currently being used, which means their limited to 25th and ROC bodies. (so no knife sheaths, or cool gear like in the POC or Resolute figs?)
2) us customizes are used to cracking 25th style bodies and making ingenious Body Mixes, but is the club ?(or china for that matter, crummy production means delays in the set, which means We wont see the finished product until the last minute)?
meaning rather than seeing cool amalgamations of bodies like they did with the o-ring.. we may see entire torso/ arm parts reused. (and will they look good repainted?)
3) the club in the past has had no problem making new molds for exclusive heads, but what about the particular VESTS and HELMETS that Hasbro has used to cover up reused bodies to make a new figure? Will we see unique gear or just repainted 25th bodies?
That being said, so far Lanny has come up with some pretty cool set concepts in the past (headhunters, Cobras most wanted, Tanks for the memories) I just really hope the figure parts Hasbro lets him play around with match his concept skills.

I wanted to say something along these lines in one of the other convention set threads. I am by no means an aficionado of the club and con like yourself so there was no way I'd be able to express my concerns as eloquently as you did here.
It seems most people are hoping for 15 - 20 highly sought after characters with all new tooling. Sadly this is not going to happen for the reasons you outlined above.
I share your fears as well for this set. Then i think about the Argen 7 figures they did 2 years ago. I thought the Crimson Strike team was ok... but the Joe offerings were an inspired choice, with even fewer part options available at the time then they will have for this year.
This is the first year for the new modern era standard and I have no doubt they will have some unique and surprisingly original options for us attendees. I am salivating at the possibilities and I'm eagerly awaiting the first glimpses!

How did those Argen guys turn out?
How were the paint apps?
I've never seen a set in person, I wanted to get the 3 pack, I still might, ebay prices have been kinda steep as of late.

Mine are excellent! Some of the eyes are a bit wonky but that's nothing new.
You can see them all here

well the Argen 7 figs looked ok with the camo paint scemes. but were limited with the accessories that the 25th characters had.
meaning characters had to mirror or be equipped with already established character gear.
hopefully the ROC molds offer some freedom of creation...
At the Con Rountable, Lanny illustrated his process of designing the con sets..
I trust his methods. Im just skitty on the resources that Hasbro will give him to work with.
Like i said, the Club most likely wont foot the bill for brand new FULL molds, but just parts (and usually if Hasbro can utilize them later)

Aside from heads, aren't there enough arms, legs, and torsos out there to work with?

I loved my Argen set. they are awesome. my only gripe is the bright blues kinda contrast with my other regular joes. the other colored guys weren't to bad

They look beautiful. Some of the best paint aps I've seen on a fig in that scale. Manleh and Starduster are a little on the bright side, but you barely notice the reuse of parts. Some were pretty clever (Hawk w/a tan and red hair really looks like a whole other guy).

The set I suggested (Oktober Guard versus IGs) could mostly use existing parts, at least for the action figures. Some would need new heads and Horrorshow would at least need a new head and torso and/or vest to look accurate, but a lot could be kitbashed.
Colonel Brekov-Red Star repaint
Daina-Lady J repaint with new head
Schrage-serviceable body with Rock & Roll's bullet straps and new head
Stormavik-same thing, could use Lt. Stone or a Flint head
Horrorshow-could probably use a ROC Heavy Duty body with new head and vest or new torso entirely
Dragonsky-f*ck it, they could repaint Blowtorch
Voltar-IG body with new head
Ferret-I've seen some kitbashes here that work very well
Wild Boar-same
Annihilator-Matt Trakker body with Lamprey head

I love the Argen 7 figures even with the bright blue. The Strike Team set wasn't that bad. Baroness came out really well, the Twins are solid, and the troop builder that so many seem to dislike are an interesting split off from the normal Viper design. The AT figures (specifically the making of the Air Adventurer) was less inspiring. The torso is a mess from holding the head on to how the upper & lower chest don't really work together.

I thought they were killer. One of the best times I ever had setting up a dio was them. Pics in my "Gran Chaco" album.

I think in the end, it will all depend on how picky we want to be.
Take Undertow, using all the parts from an EEL, Cobra Diver, Torpedo, Etc. you could probably fashion together a pretty decent looking version if the colors were right.
You would just need his little jet ski thing and his mask.
Although there will always be a handful of people bitching b/c the shoulder pads aren't exactly right.
Using existing parts, you could make a kickass Jinx, plenty of people here have. It wouldn't look like the classic Jinx, but it could still be a cool looking Jinx none the less.
Would you rather have an updated Jinx or no Jinx at all?

I was impressed with what they were able to do with the limited molds they had with the Argen 7 guys.
I have no worries whatsoever.

KOP, I feel the same way. I guess my issue with them, is I think most of the 25th offerings (excluding later ones) were pretty bland. ROC started to correct this with vests to add more detail to bland bodies, and POC has knocked it right out of the park. I also fear the pea heads, wimpy accessories, and poor articulation.
Looking at what the club has already done however, instills a little bit of confidence. The CST set managed to bulk up the vipers and not make them so tall and lanky. The Argen 7 (though disappointing they were not in o-ring form) were executed pretty well, although I wasn't a fan of the bland bodies and accessories. I prefer when the club uses more updated looks to older figures or goes with a different concept entirely. I'm not too much of a fan of copying things unless it's a particularly complimentary paint app that completely changes the look of a figure (Olive drab colors on the SWAT team)

how exactly do they go about designing the sets?
well it was a long process, but Lanny is apparently the club's resident graphic artist (and a damned good one), who helps plot out the Box and carded Artwork before its sent out to a hired artist. he also plots out the figure construction and parts, and pantone picks the colors the figure will have.
(pantone being the standard numerical color shade medium most businesses and graphic designers go by, rather than saying 'i want this to be red")
from there he sends the photoshop mockups to Hasbro for approval and Mold availability. From there its send back to the club, final approved, and then sent to the Chinese molding plants, then the process goes back & forth with samples for approval and tweaking for errors.
(this is also when sometimes figures leak on the web, then end up being totally different than the final product, cause they went in a different direction, hence that picture of Quirrel last year)
once the get a final approved prototype,.. THEN thats when they let us in on what the figures look like (Hence too many delays mean we don't see them until the last minute)
In the past this was an arduous process, as Lanny had to chose upper and lower legs, torsos, waists, upper and lower arms, and usually a recolored, if not completely new sculpted head.
with the waist/ torso construction of the 25th bodies, as well as the compatibility of chests/ torsos, this may prove different.

Do you remember Major Bludd's Skull Squad Troopers?
I would love if they redid them, they could be a straight-up repaint of Resolute Troopers.
They would look sweet imho.

Well the club has already officially said that the figures will be 25th style, and NOT be a retale on an already released set.
which means:
1) the set will be something brand new
2) the set figure making process (that i just mentioned) is already well on its way.
