I've been a Penguins fan all of my life. I finally have something to cheer about since the days of Lemieux, Jagr, and Francis.
LETS GO PENS!!!
On another note I've been a Celtic's fan all of my life as well and I now have something to cheer about since the days of Bird, McHale, and Parrish.
Now if only my Yankees can get back on top.
This is a long shot and I might be stretching it, but I hope someday my Dolphins return to football glory.

How can you be a Celtics fan and still like the Yankees? lol
I live in New York City, but for some reason my dad grew up as a Celtics fan. So growing up we watched them on TV anytime they played a local team like the Knicks or Nets. That was the only time I watched NBA basketball. If the Knicks or Nets were playing someone else we didn't watch the games.
The better story is how I became a Dolphins fan living in NYC. My dad is a Jets fan, but I grew up watching baseball and playing baseball because my dad played baseball right up until he signed up for the Navy. He supposedly received a letter in the mail to try out for the Yankees in Florida for Spring Training sometime in 1969 or so. The letter came a few days before he joined the Navy, but his mom kept it from him and never told him until years later. In those days the players didn't make millions like they do now, so I guess his mom didn't want him to "throw his life away" playing a silly sport. Well since he missed out on his chance he decided to push me and my brother hard into playing, which after awhile made us hate the sport and start resenting him.
One day in 1982 he had on the Jets vs. Dolphins playoff game. This was the first time I remember watching football. All I could remember is the Dolphins running up and down the field with the ball, especially with the help of Jets QB Richard Todd tossing interceptions. My dad was yelling and screaming as he always does, so from that day forward I was a Dolphins fan to go against my dad.
I also started to root for the Mets in the 80's to piss him off even more until we reconciled. What can I say I was a Gary Carter fan in those days. In the late 70's and early 80's though I liked Bucky Dent when he was a Yankee.
Now it's Yankees all the way baby!!!

LOL, i guess that answers my question. That story actually hits home with me. I am Detroit Lions fan. Never knew why except for they always played on Thanksgiving and seemed to lose alot. But i loved Barry Sanders. He was the best and it was an honor watching him on thanksgiving. I have been a Lions fan ever since...
Baseball, i have always liked the Braves and Red Sox. The Yankees and Mets biggest rivals. For respect of you and the team you like i won't spend a whole post bashing New York. But i can definitely understand following a team that someone else wouldn't expect you too...

Oh and to explain why I'm a Penguins fan from New York City, it's because my dad never watched a game of hockey in his life before I got into it. I saw Mario Lemieux play and I was hooked.
My dad never liked it, so I took up playing it as well. I actually found out the hard way that I sucked as a regular player. So my friend's older cousins decided to put me in goal for fun so they could shoot at me and kill me. They were very surprised when I took to it like I was a natural and I excelled at it. I played for a few years in leagues on Long Island. I was even scouted by the Long Island Jawz roller hockey team that played one season in the RHI at Nassau Coliseum where the Islanders play. Unfortunately I never made those try outs due to an injury and surgery.
I haven't played goalie since my surgery, but when I was healthy again I started to play left wing, which I got better at as time went on, but never excelled at any position like goalie ever again.
Now that I'm getting older I miss playing hockey, especially goalie. I want to pick it up again but I need new goalie equipment and it's expensive. I have new player equipment that I've hardly used. Maybe I should trade it in for goalie equipment.

That was awful nice of your friends to put you in as goalie so they could hit pucks at you. At least you found out you were good at it and seemed to find something you liked. Unfortunately for you, you had an injury, but at least you got to play and you still get to, just not the position you were wanting. My wife is a huge hockey fan and she has told me several times how expensive the gear is. But hey, you only live once and i say if you want to do it, you shouldn't hold back. I used to not like hockey. I used to watch the ends of the games waiting for the baseball games to start. Usually hockey was still going or in overtime so i had to wait until it was over. I guess that is how i started to like it. So after a while i would tune in to watch entire games and then catch the baseball game afterwards...Now i like to watch it with my wife whenever we have time, which hasn't been alot this season...

I'm a long time Red Wings fan. I'd enjoy seeing them hoist another cup, Zetterberg and Datsyuk are phenominal, but it just isn't the same since Yzerman retired and Shanahan went to the Rangers. I was also a little disappointed with their trade deadline inactivity this year.
I've actually gotten mildly caught up in the Capitals revolution (not hard since they are practically local to me). You have to admit watching Ovechkin's rise to superstardom is exciting and his raw enthusiasm is highly contageous. I've always thought he brought more power to the game than Sid the kid.
And, so far, I'd have to say that the east is finally more interesting to watch than the west for first time in like ten years. I wouldn't mind at all seeing the east final be Washington meeting Pittsburgh (another sentimental favorite of mine - grew up near Pittsburgh during the Lemieux era).
In the west, I'd like to see Detroit meet San Jose (assuming they show up this year).
Just so long as Anaheim and New Jersey go home early. Ottawa looks dead in the water. And maybe Colorado is back to form this year, but I kinda doubt it. :)

forget paper then, just watch them play this week. the remaining teams from the West are grittier, bigger, and tougher. like I said excluding the Pens I don't think the Eastern teams can stand up to that. I do agree with you that regular season stats aren't a surefire way to determine who will win.

Detroit fan hardcore, Lions, Tigers, Pistons, Red Wings, though since moving to South Florida I have become a bit of a Panthers fan, since no one goes to the games and they have really cheap tickets. Dolphins suck, and I just can't bring myself to cheer for em, but season tickets are cheap! Heat suck...but tickets are cheap when the Pistons come to town!
the Red Wings have a good shot at winning the cup. As long as they get past the 2nd round they are almost a lock (just becausits always the 7 and 8 seeds that beat the piss out of em in the first and second rounds) Though I too would not count out the Sharks.

Ouch!! That one hurt…The Wings just skated circles around the Avs and made them look silly. The puck was in our zone the entire game!! It was like the Wings were on an eternal power play. Jose picked a great time to go soft... It didn’t help that we were missing Forsberg, Smyth, Stastny and Svatos, but that’s the way it goes and I’m not making any excuses. We were just embarrassed this series. Now, I would like to see the Rangers win one for Drury.

Yeah, I know but I'm a die hard Detroit fan....been since the days of Probert and Joey Kocur picking fights every time they got out of the penalty box during the 80's. I am also a die hard Lions Fan, which is the only team in Detroit that is destined to do terrible every year (at least since the Tigers turned their franchise around) so it kind of evens out. At least I'm not a bandwagon Yankees/Red Sox/Patriots fan (I freakin hate the Yankees and am starting to hate the Sox) that only likes them because "it's Americas team" Garbage! Are you talking about the subtle "butt end" that Osgood gave Ribiero... the one no one would have even noticed had it not been scrutinized in slow mo repeatedly after Ribiero lost his mind and two-hand chopped Ozzie? That little butt-end was nothing compaired to the abuse Turco and all the Dallas tools have been giving Holmstrom around the Dallas net all series (dude needs kevlar underwear and back-of-the-leg pads), but I guess you didn't notice that... Are you sure you didn't mean "DAAAALLLLLLLAAAASSSSS!!!!" at the beginning of your post? And pretty much everybody but Detroit "bought" players this year, and pretty much every other year. Pittsburgh, San Jose, Colorado, Dallas... just to name a few. It's called the trade deadline, maybe you've heard of it, and Detroit rarely gets ahold of the big guns at the deadline, because they already have significant money tied up in the home-grown talent. You don't get to watch much hockey down there in Florida, do you?

so are Sverdlovsk, Russia/ Toronto and Peace River, Canada/ Pieta, Vasteras, Karlskrona, and Njurunda Sweden/ Pardubice, Czech Republic suburbs or districts of Detroit? cause thats where your home-grown talent comes from.

Hiya Sharke! Thanks for jumping in... Nice job by your Sharks again this year, by the way...
I guess I will need to break this down for you, so here you go (point by point):
On the butt ending - I guess you haven't paid much attention to the playoffs either so far if you haven't noticed that kind of thing going on constantly throughout the games (reference any Pens/Flyers game). The only difference is that Ribiero lost his mind when someone dared to do it to him. That was the point. If he hadn't gone caveman, that little butt-ending would have gotten no more attention than the 500 or so other butt-ends, elbows, chops and other cheap shots tossed around so far in the playoffs, including plenty by Mr. Turco (you might remember him as the goalie who sent your Sharks home this year) who had the audacity to call the Ozzie kettle black.
On your point about the trade deadline "purchases": What exactly is your point? Teams buy big name players for the playoffs. That's all I was saying. What are you trying to say?
Thanks for looking those up, good research, but you missed the point entirely. Homegrown = drafted (often exceptional players overlooked by the teams with the high draft picks) and groomed for primetime within their own system. You know the opposite of bringing in say, Brian Campbell at the deadline to try to boost a team to try to get them past the second round of the playoffs. Get it?
About the hockey coverage: Quite right about Florida having more hockey teams, so there is no excuse for running off at the keyboard without good information. That is what I took issue with, along with his claims to be a Wings fan, and then immediately taking the Dallas line on the Ribiero incident. Oh, you got it, you summarized my point perfectly with your last sentence. Thanks for the clarification! You got that much right.
And for future reference, remember, third man in gets nothing but the penalty, especially when he's just a sore Sharks fan. Shouldn't you be busy being pissed at Dallas, and leave us Wingnuts to our own disagreement? The Sharks didn't get far enough to be eliminated by the Wings...
nmurugger99
05-14-2008, 11:31 AM
Ok, so I haven't been on for a couple of days and it was actually quite entertaining to read your guys posts.
First: Sharke thanks for sticking up for me in my absence.
Second: Thunderdan19, glad your a wings fan and im glad you disagree with me, that's your opinion. My referral to the butt end of the stick of Ozzies was simply that it wasn't needed. They were winning the game and there was no need for it. If I was playing and a goalie did that to me and they were winning I'd go apeshit too....fact was Osgood needed to show some class. He deserved to get whacked or at least some sort of retaliation. I am not justifying anything of what Holmstrom takes from Turco, mind you some/most of it should be called, but Holmstrom knows full well if he camps in front of the net he is going to get abused. Every hockey player knows that. But if your just skating by the goalie and not doing anything to interfere and he purposely shoves the butt end of his stick at your face, that is not part of the game, and is not warranted. Now if Osgood took a major slash or something earlier in the game then maybe I could see the reasoning. But as far as I know he didn't.
3rd: Bought players...the trade deadline is fine..I have no problem with teams bringing in talent to win, it's a business and that's the whole point. But from a fans perspective, and I guess you might call me a purist, I prefer it when teams build their teams by finding the talent in the draft and molding their players to work together, not just paying for it. It's my opinion and your welcome to disagree. I'm tired of always hearing from fans of other teams (and I'm guilty of this myself with regards to the Yankees) "they better win it because they bought all the best players". Now I know your going to say "but in the end it all comes down to actually winning it". I know this and your right, but I think (again my opinion) there is more of a satisfaction of winning when it's not necessarily expected based on the amount of big name talent.
Lastly, about the hockey coverage: Yes I live in Florida and Yes Florida has more hockey than Michigan, but no the hockey coverage isn't better. There is some, but not alot at least in the South Florida area, I cannot speak for the Tampa area. Also I haven't had much time to really pay attention to all of the playoffs. So no, I didn't do much research about what's been happening throughout the playoffs, I just get the scores and some game highlights off the ESPN tickers and occasionally a game on VS. So you are right thunderdan, I should have done my research, but honestly I don't think my statement warranted it. Next time I will make sure to have a fully typed 15 page report, complete with coversheet, detailing every aspect of my statements.
I'm sorry if I embare-assed you thunderdan as a Wings fan, I was never rooting for Dallas, I was merely stating because of Ribiero's actions that Dallas could have taken that and used it to swing the momentum in their favor to try to come back and win a few games and maybe force a game 7. As a wings fan you know just as well as I do, that the Wings do tend to shoot themselves in the foot (though usually not past the second round). That is all I was saying. But now that the wings are in the finals and will most likely be playing the Pens, our little argument seems pointless. So I will leave it to you to take what you want from this and leave it at that. I am a wings fan but also a fan of good clean sportsmanship, Osgoods hit on Ribiero was not warranted and stupid in my opinion. You can agree or disagree and I'm perfectly happy either way because that is your opinion.
sharke
05-14-2008, 12:22 PM
wow, thats super Thunderdan19! I guess since the Sharks didn't go further I should just sit at home and cry instead of watching the playoffs and enjoying them like an adult (which is what I assume you did last year after the Ducks knocked out detroit). because apparently I can only enjoy a team and not a sport, or god forbid be objective! and I am the 3rd man in but I'd rather be that then an unnecessarily rude jackass hiding behind the safety of my home pc.
anywho, just for my clarification
a) I like Dallas but I'm a sore loser for the Sharks losing to Dallas?
b) what the hell does that have to do with detroit?
c) Red Wings fans have to buy the line completely to actually be fans?
not alot at least in the South Florida area, I cannot speak for the Tampa area.
FSN (or whatever its called now) cover all Tampa Games and is available throughout state. plus given the state of other pro sports right now, its actually easier to find hockey covered statewide. as for South Florida they cover hockey the same way they cover all other sports, only if the team wins.

Please, if you are planning to post on the internet, grow a bit of skin. My statements were very minor compared to what I have received and given on this very website on various issues. As soon as Detroit gets their act together again and start hitting Dallas in the mouth I don't think Pitt has a huge shot against them. If they get past Dallas they'll roll through the Finals in five games. But they gotta get through Dallas, which they will, they just wanted us Wing fans to "shart" ourselves. **Shaking fist in air*** D$mn Red Wings!

With the trouble they're having finishing off the Stars I'm not so sure the Red Wings will bet the Pens so easily. It would be a tough series, but I think Crosby & Co have a good chance at bringing the Cup back to Pittsburgh regardless of who they play in the finals.

LET'S GO RED WINGS!!! 4-0 in the 2nd period baby! Bring on Pittsburgh! It's going to be a great Stanley Cup series! By the way, you guys are probably right about how the 3 young Pens are playing, Detroit in six (instead of five as I predicted earlier). Either way though, it's going to be a great series.

Looks like the Wings and Pens are on a collision course, 4-0 in the second period. Being a Pens fan my heart tells me they will take the cup. Either way Pittsburgh versus Detroit is going to be a hell of a series. Maybe the best ever.

man everyone in here thinks DET. is gonna roll past the PENS... I doubt that... let's not forget that the Pens are the one who have played the best hockey this post season.. I see this series going at least 6 games..

the pens are playing well....detroit is just playing better. Detroit is finishing every single check (something they haven't done in years past) and it's throwing off the young guns of the Penguins....Pitt is also not getting a lot of bounces to go their way. They are getting some chances but they seem to blow them. Detroit is playing absolute dominating defence. Hopefully Pitt takes one of the next two. I want to see Detroit win it at home in five.

As usual, when teams aren't winning what happens, they blame the refs and/or say the other team is cheating (obstruction/diving). Come on Pittsburgh, suck it up. You got beat by the better team in the first two games.

Well said. How can the Wings be obstructing when they are getting to the pucks first and standing up at the blue line in good position just about every time? Thierien's comments are the most ridiculous I've heard this playoff season.
Geez, Michel, instead of passing blame to the refs, how about working on a solution for the Detroit defense that thus far has been steel reinforced kevlar? Have the ref's taken goals off the board for the Pens? No. It's happened twice to the Wings in the past two series. Still think you have something to complain about?
Adapt and overcome or go home. Isn't that what coaching is all about? If you can't, at least take a lesson from a high class coach like Dave Tippett and retain your dignity throughout and come back next year.
Championship teams overcome adversity and drive on, or learn from it and come back. Wannabe ones lose their cool, blame the refs and then go home...

Pens got their win, barely, Detroit still controlled the 3rd period of that game. Detroit in five. They'll come back once they fix they little kinks and win game 4 and head back to win game 5 in Detroit. Hopefully the Pistons can do the same....they almost won last night, probably could have if the rookie would have missed his free throw. If only the Tigers and Lions could get back on track.

I think that will be high point for Pens. Thats the best they played and they still only beat Detroit by and bare pulled that off. Good for Detroit, bad for Pittsburgh

count down to Detroit winning cup beginning now........
to Detroits credit they outplayed Pittsburgh in every regard. wish Zetterburg had flattened Crosby when he had the chance (like Flyers did) but thats a completely different topic.

33 seconds from sweet victory...but I have to give Pittsburgh credit, they hung in there, tied it up and won it OT. Awesome game in my opinion. Hoping the Wings come out on top tonight with no OT.

Wings should have won that game for sure, they dominated for majority of the game and let up for a few seconds and its tied, and they dominated overtime as well. If not for a couple of cheap goalie interfence calls they could have won

Pens fan here and I just want to congratulate the Wings on winning the cup. You guys outplayed us and deserve it. I am a heartbroken Pens fan but I will give credit where credit is due. This whole series I felt like I was watching the Mighty Ducks 2 movie and felt as if the Wings were Iceland because they were bigger, and stronger and had more facial hair. Only the outcome in this series didn't turn out for me as it did for the USA Ducks in that movie. The Wing's relentless checking and defense brought a championship back to Detroit.
Time for the Pens to start making plans for next year's run.

That was one of the best Stanley Cup finals I've ever watched. I'm a huge Wings fan (originally from Michigan) so I'm glad they won. Pen fans shouldn't be dissappointed though, they really showed what a great team they have.

I'm a long time Wings fan, and it bothers the hell out of me when people won't give the Red Wings credit for what they've earned. They were the #1 team in the NHL, they won the Stanley Cup, and people still say they suck. Last night when the game ended and the 2 teams shook hands, I applauded Pittsburgh for the hard fought competition they brought against Detroit. I'll be enjoying every minute of the celebration tomorrow downtown in the D.
Go Wings!!! 2008 Stanley Cup Champions!!!

Typical sore loser...
Get over it. (Oh, and please take Don Cherry back... He still doesn't seem to get that everybody south of the border just laughs at him).
Congrats to the Pens for a great series after all! They showed more character and grit than I believed they had after the first two games. If they can learn from their experience, keep their core together and build, they will definitely be back.
Go Red Wings! 2007-2008 Stanley Cup Champions!

I think for a lot people its their fan base rather then the actual team. Not saying all or anyone here but they either just jump on the bandwagon cause Detroits a powerhouse and then ask questions like "why the octapus?" and such or they're like this guy...

come on guys... it's not about being a sore loser... it's about just busting your balls for a little bit longer...(just cuz our teams didn't make it to the finals) the red wings where the best this season... from the start of the playoffs they dominated excepts for those three games they let the predators win... they were the best hands down... that defense was just crazy especially there Shot on goal ... they earn it.. but just because I or someone else believed they still suck it's an opinion... a wrong one at that... cuz after all you are the Stanley Cup Champions
