This is an invitation to the best fighters around the world to prove that they are the best. Create an original martial artist character custom figure to enter into the tournament. Only the best fighter will succeed in defeating all before them to become champion in this no holds barred battle royale martial arts tournament.

Rules

1. Your original custom fighter must be 3 ¾ scale and be able to exist in the G.I Joe Universe (i.e., no super hero powers, could be (but not limited to) a Joe, Cobra, or a member of another faction, etc.). You may use whatever parts that you want (i.e., G.I. Joe, Star Wars, Build’N’Brawl, Tri-Gate Creations, Broken Arrow Toys, Marvel Universe, etc.).

2. You may only enter 1 custom figure.

3. You may include any hand-to-hand weapons. Fire arms, explosives, or lasers and the like will not be permitted in the ring.

4. You may submit no more than 4, clear, unaltered photos. They can be no larger than 600 x 600 pixels. Take your photos against a blank background (white, light gray, or light blue poster board or blank copy paper).

5. At least 1 photo needs to be of your custom fighter in a fighting pose. Action photos speak louder than words.

6. You will have 5 weeks to complete your custom fighter.

7. Your custom fighter must be created exclusively for this contest and may not have been posted anywhere else before.

8. You may post your custom fighter anywhere you wish once the champion has been announced. Premature posting of your entry will result in disqualification.

9. All Hisstank members in good standing who joined on or before 6.1.10 may enter.

Submissions

On 7.6.10 (or earlier ;) ), an email address will be provided in this post to send your photos to. The subject line should read “Kumite”. Along with your 4 photos, include your name, user name, mailing address, how long you’ve been customizing, and the following information about your custom fighter:

· Name of your custom
· Bio/Background/Origin
· Fighting Style(s)
· Weapon(s)
· You also need to include a parts list, what work was done on the custom, and any notes of special interest.

You will have 2 days to submit your entry. Late entries will not be accepted. No exceptions.

All eligible entries will receive their own official tournament invitation scroll.

Voting

There will be 3 types of voting.

1. Customizers who enter will decide the Champion and Runner-Up. If you enter a custom into the contest, you will be expected to participate in fighter evaluations. Entrants who fail to turn in their evaluations will be eliminated from the tournament.

Customizers will be given 2 days to evaluate all of the fighters and pick their top 5. You may not choose your own custom. Take into consideration the following when choosing your top 5:

· Originality
· Parts
· Paint
· Sculpting
· Articulation
· Accessories
· Overall Presentation

More detailed instructions will be given at the time of evaluations.

2. The Hisstank Community will vote for the People’s Choice.

Voting will take place in a new thread 3 days after the contest ends. All eligible entries will be posted in the thread for the Hisstank community to vote for their favorite custom. Only Hisstank members who joined on or before 6.1.10 may vote. You may not vote for the People’s Choice if you enter this contest. Voting will remain open for 3 days.

3. I will pick my Favorite Fighter, otherwise known as The Chosen One, and the Best Amateur entry, otherwise known as The Apprentice.

Not just ninja, any martial artist/warrior/fighter. There are tons of martial arts (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_martial_arts) to choose from. Just about every culture and country has (or had) a martial art. Deadliest Warrior anyone?

I'm really not one for contests, but this one sounds like it could be pretty fun. Does the character have to be completely original or can it be inspired by an already existing character? Not nesesarily from gi Joe, but a character from an anime or something with a re invented character description and story?

It must be an original character, but it can be inspired by/from anything you want. For example, a Bruce Lee custom doesn't qualify. However, you can make a fighter that was inspired by Bruce Lee, kind of like Tekken and Street Fighter did with Marshall Law and Fei Long respectively. Keep in mind that originality will be a major point for voting for the Champion and that your custom has to fit (make sense) in the G.I. Joe Universe.

There is only the G.I. Joe Universe in this contest, no alternate realities. Only one Storm Shadow can exist here. I want original characters to avoid people voting for a custom based on the character's popularity, not because it's a great custom. But there are ways that you could make the custom work for this contest...

Yeah, that's acceptable. What I want to steer clear of are photos with dramatic lighting, background props, and adding text/designs. Just the figure against a plain background. Contrast (light figure/darker background and vice-versa) is okay for the photos.

New customizers shouldn't be afraid or discouraged to enter the tournament. ;) Afterall, there are 5 ways to win, with one of them being an Amateur Entry chosen by me. I'm also choosing my favorite fighter which means anybody who enters has a chance to win. Plus, you never know who the board will end up choosing as their top fighter.

More ways to play, more ways to win, more ways to have fun than any contest I've done yet!

It doesn't have to be a real martial art. You can make up any style that you want.

Your martial artist doesn't have to be Asian in any form. Any fighter, from any age, clothed however you want can enter as long as the character can fit in the G.I. Joe Universe.

If anybody is unsure if their fighter is eligible to enter into the tournament (and don't want to spill the beans in this thread), just PM me with your idea and I'll let you know if your fighter has been cleared to compete.

Cropping is cool (and encouraged). Slight adjustments to Brightness, Contrast, and Color Balance, etc. are okay. I'm more concerned with photos having text (like 'Custom by So and So') or special effects added.

A few points to keep in mind when everyone is taking and editing their photos:


Pose. What’s exciting or interesting about an action figure that is just standing there? Put the action back in action figure and pose the custom for the photo. Remember, you must submit at least 1 photo of your fighter in a fighting pose.
Use a blank background. Nothing will take the focal point off of your custom faster than having other objects in the background to take attention away from the custom. You want to show off your work, so don’t clutter the shot with other things.
Macro setting on your camera. Most everyone knows this by now, but in case you don’t, choose the macro (looks like a flower) setting on your camera to take your photos. This will give you clearer, focused, and more detailed photos of your figure.
Lighting. Try not to use the flash on your camera. You’ll get better results by using a light source(s) or a light box.
Crop. Crop your photos to make the custom the focal point. The custom loses detail when 75% of the photo is the background. Crop the photo close enough to the custom so it becomes the only focal point. If you want to show off a detail, crop the photo so that the detail is the primary focus of the photo.
Resize your photos. Try to keep the photos around 600 X 600 pixels.

I'm still not 100% on this... But I'm going with no. It has to be an all new original character in design and concept.

Oh well, funny thing is I had a pretty good thing thing going with a random kitbash and repaint. I was going to go with conceptualizing a whole new character, changing some minor details in paint and what not. But since it is technically my second custom, I went with the conventional approach and make a unique design of an already established character.

That's life, I guess. I'll be posting up my new martial-arts oriented version of an old character in the next couple days.

Yes, on the 12th, or shortly there after, the Tournament begins. This will be how the Kumite Champion, Runner Up, People's Choice, Chosen One, and Apprentice are revealed. It's basically a presentation of the winners using a tournament format.

Everyone who enters will decide who the Champion and Runner Up will be using the evaluations.

The Board (except those who entered) will vote for the People's Choice.

I will choose the Chosen One and the Apprentice.
