I am starting this thread to either show off your Killer Whale, original, custom or other, and also for those of use who are lucky enough to have one, and are looking for parts to help each other out to complete ours.

Now, WHALE owners - ASSEMBLE! :)

I had a mint Killer Whale and Night Striker that I had personally assembled and applied stickers. Sadly, I sold them all 2 years ago. :( My Night Striker had no orange parts on it because I subbed it all with vintage parts too.

You know, even less the orange parts (if there were black) the original WHALE looks sooooooo much better than it does w/ black parts.

No offense to Dagger, just making a statement.

We have got to get the dude who's got the Coast Guard themed one to post it here, that thing is sweet. :)

I've got a complete WHALE I bought off ebay, and 1 from my youth that's missing a lot of pieces.

It's got 1 cannon, 1 gun turret, the bike, but is missing the missles and launchers, and the proppellers are beat to heck.

This is a great idea especially for excess parts.

I have a complete one from 1984 that I got as a kid. The vanes are all unbroken (hard to believe after having been stored for so long). I even have the original unapplied stickers.

I also have a second that I am nearly done with.

I will try and get pics up soon!

Not only should we do some parts swapping (I have a few parts BTW, nothing too major and a lot of dash boards) But we shoukd also be documenting any variations we find such as the two different dash boards and the changes to where the fan shrouds attach, etc....

It does make for a unique version.

Still have my original WHALE, although the ejection sea sled mechanism never worked well for me.

Dumb Story Time from when I first got the WHALE for Christmas in 1984. During the two-week Xmas break, we had a fairly sunny day. My mom heated up the outdoor hot tub to about 75 degrees and turned off the bubbler, so I could go out and play with my new WHALE. Put on my trunks, brought out the Water Moccasin, SHARC and any other "floatable" Joe toy I had.

I don't think the APC did too well, though.

I got a mint Whale complete, except for busted veins and one spare shell. One of my favourite vehicles of all time, theres just so much playvalue in it.
Heres a tip, i've opened up 3 whales and every one of them had multiple lost accessories inside. Next to the white spring loaded arms that pop the sled out are large holes, once something falls down there the only way to get it out is to take the shell apart. if you've got a second hand one, turn it upside down slowly and listen for anything rattling about.
That cavity is the Narnia of Joe accessories!

I am seriously going to have a WHALE in my collection sometime this year. I just need to find the "right one". I have 3 of them in my store inventory right now, but none are complete. The best one is missing 3 good vanes and some missiles and missile rack arms.

Hey, for those who want Broken Arrow's vane sets... just e-mail him about them. He should be able to get them available again (assuming he has time). Just give him some time to reply (in case he's super busy).

Last, I wanna put this out there... What about putting the Night Striker shell on the WHALE flotation skirt? That way the vehicle is almost ALL BLACK. If someone has both, it should be possible to do relatively easy.

I still have mine from Christmas '84. I was so excited when I opened that thing. It's spent many hours battling Cobra along the way. I really cant remember ever having the bike on the back, it was lost so long ago, but the rest is mostly complete as far as I remember. I believe the sled door hinge is broken though. It's in storage right now but all these pics make me want to bring it out soon. If only I had room here in my apartment.

I've had 4 previously (sold them all at some point) and am working on restoring my 5th. I already have molds for the fan directional vanes, and will be making molds for the missile pod stanchions, cannon tips and a few other of the easily lost small parts. I'd like to be able to make the fan shrouds and fans, but I don't think I'd be able to sell enough to make it worth the amount of silicone it would take to mold them (since I'd have to make two molds for uniform colors in pairs).

And I don't recall who mentioned it earlier, but that "Coastie" version was completely bitchen'!

That's the big thing I am finding is the fan rings. Might be worth if if you charged enough for them? I'd be willing to go $30 for a set, as much of a bitch as it is to get them. :(

The P/N grouping of 337(3) seems to be the initial release of the WHALE while 339(5) is a latter one. The Night Striker (NF Whale) has the 337(3) numbers. 337(3) are A bodies and the 339(5) are B bodies.

The dash boards from Shogi's picture are only correct for a WHALE. The Night Striker's DB is black and not olive as pictured and labelled.

The Whale also has number of fan shroud helper tab variations as well.
There is a no tab, single (to each shroud) fat and thin tab variation, then a three tab ( center fat and flanking thin tabs) variation.

The Night Striker and mail in Whales have the 3 tab variations.

The lower launch door also has variations, soild, up, and left/right tabs.

This short list (barring any errors) doesn't include the pairing or progression of which variations mix with each other or not ... but I will include that once I can get more data .

I'm 99% sure they weren't, but can anyone confirm the Whale missiles were not included with any other vehicle?
If that is the case then i have seen white and grey missiles and 2 different shades of vane. The usual olive green and a much more grey version.
Anyone else have any info on this?

Ok, I got mine yesterday :) not too bad of shape, but here's what I need -

Prop shroud – x2
Propeller assembly (shaft and fan) – x2
Vert Vane – x4
Link bar – x2
Horizontal vane – x1
Cannon caps – x2
Missile box assembly – x1
Missiles – x4

I'll gladly trade from my linked BST list below if anyone has any of this stuff, or be willing to buy it if we can make out a deal.

Thanks! :)

The WHALE missiles are unique to it. As for the white and gray difference, if the gray isnt (washed out/faded /off white etc.) there maybe a Int'l difference for the missile color. I would also have the same reckoning for the gray vanes, just make sure your not looking at reproduction parts as well.

Both of these parts i picked up with a large junker vehicle lot about 5 years ago, which inlcuded a whale.
Both of these parts were uniform in colour so not sunfaded and unlightly to be repro.
Maybe they were just slight variations from mixing the batch of plastic. It would be interesting if others had turned up in europe.
The missile i sold with a spare 80% complete whale a while ago, the vane i think i may still have. I'll have a dig around and see if i can find it.

If you bought them in the UK, you may have a UK variation or, as you said, they maybe a production coloring difference.

Hey Alyosha -

You might want to think twice about making those fan rings / prop shrouds - I had a BITCH of a time finding two, and just paid $32 shipped for two of them off of ebay. I think there more be more $$ in them than you realize (???) Just a FYI -

Also, for anyone out there looking for a GOOD WHALE, not missing a lot of crap (especially the fan / prop gear), $120 for a COMPLETE WHALE seems to be about the going rate, and while it IS high, I'll be honest, I am now finding it's a pretty fair price. :(

Most of the incomplete WHALEs I looked at (including mine) where in the $45-60 range, and even then needed around another $60 or so in parts. So it MIGHT be to your advantage if you are looking for one just to bite the bullet and be done w/ it, vs. a lot of searching, waiting and heartache trying to chase the rest of it down. :(

I love mine and wouldn't part with it for anything. I don't have pictures but I've had it since christmas morning of those many decades ago.

I would love to see Hasbro reissue the WHALE. It is such a great vehicle. Of course they'd have to redo the foot pegs but I wouldn't change anything else.

No one has made any repro parts? The price for those Vanes are insane. One of mine is cracked but I won't bother upgrading at this point.

I just got one thinking the vanes were intact but found out differently. I was given a partial refund, but trying to find replacements have been a pain-in-the-ass.

I don't see anything on ebay, and trying to find a site that isn't linked to ebay is even harder.

Here is a question. Say you have all the parts for the vanes (which I do) but the vertical pieces have broken. Thoughts on how I could get them to stay together? Besides duck tape of course. I am guessing glue might not / won't hold. Tape would look bad.

Thoughts?

darthdrew13

if you are looking to connect the 2 parts of the vanes back together, I saw someone use OD green duct tape in small pieces and it didn't look too badly. You should be able to get it at a Bass Pro Shops or hunting section of a sporting goods store. I thought about 'pinning' them back together with tiny nails inserted into each part (at the top and at the bottom). Not sure how that'd look, plus the vanes would be stuck straight that way.

As for pricing on a 100% complete WHALE, I would sell them at shows here in the Dallas area for $100 even. Sold one at Joe Con 2008 that way. I gave Crimson101 a deal on his since he decided to skip a few parts and he's a nice guy too (and local).

Think I ended up paying $27 (inc. S/H) for my fan shrouds alone. Got most of the vanes (horizontal and vertical) and the two propellers in a bunch of parts lots for basically $5 each, so it definitely adds up.

I think the windscreen and sled door will be my pain now.

On the variation in vanes unfortunately i could not find the spare to take a photo, however i did find another which i'd forgotten about. Here is a variation in fan colour. The picture makes it seem a little lighter than it is, but it is dark grey/black and is pictured next to the normal light grey one.

I sent information and pictures to yojoe with a few more undocumented euro variations a few years ago and got no reply and they were never used. ( they are still undocumented on the site)
Has anyone ever had a reply or anything used on yojoe.com?

Both O fan housing are very slightly different shades, but you can tell the difference between the left fan and the main body.

I bought a Night Striker body with some parts to build my own NS, thinkn it'd be easy. WRONG! Another auction came along and I got a nearly complete one for $100. Almost everything I needed was with the Old shell. So one of the few things I needed was one of those arms and the Crappy one had one on it. I don't wanna break the good arm or the top shell of the good NS, so I havent tried too hard to get it out. I picked up the last thing I needed though, and am working on finding other NS pieces for the second one.

This is very very tricky! My current Whale came from an auction with 2 incomplete ones, by piecing them together i managed to make a 99% mint complete example. There was one missile bracket on either.
The arm has two very thin prongs on the bottom, the only way to get one out is to push the prongs together and up from the inside. The cockpit is to small to do it so i had to take the shell completely apart. You have to be very slow and take your time.
When you get it out you will see how thin the prongs are and even if you are very careful there is a high chance they will break.
Good luck! If you do take the shell apart see if there are any lost accessories inside the shell. ( as i mentioned in an earlier post)

ok so here you go this is my tip to you. strip the ship down and pop off the top shell. run the under side under hot water from the tap. with a small tool push it out from under neath while it is under the water. this will not break any parts I did it with mine it worked. you have to hold the top where it comes out to support it while you are pushing it thrue,( you have to push hard!!!)

as for the vertical vains I used gorilla super glue it holds up real well...its a fix till you find a good set.
