View Full Version : HISS redesign

I've been thinking about a total redo of Cobra's HISS, a more 'real world' design that would be plausible. Looking through a book of armored vehicles throughout the world and history, I came across the USMC's LVTP-7, which also goes by AAV7-A1. The basic outline was sort of similar, and I liked that it was amphibious. So I drew up a rough sketch of what it would look like as the HISS - I streamlined the armor a bit and shortened the overall length. I added a larger turret and a place to mount a retractable missile launcher. The crew would be 5-6, and could hold a troop compliment of 8-10. Weapons would be 8 rockets and a 90mm gun, and could have a variety of crew-served weapons such as the Vulcan minigun, .50 cal. and MK-19 grenade launcher. Here's my first (extremely) rough draft:

I agree. It's a fantastic sketch with many possibilities, but it really does look like a Warthog with a Gun Turret.
Perhaps, rather than a HISS, it could be a Python Patrol vehicle/Transport? I say this as it would fit the whole "Stolen Joe Technology" theme.

How come I stink at drawing where he can draw almost as good as Santa?!!?!?!?!?!?

I like the sketch, wish I could see the driver a little better, I don't see it as a new HISS but it is very cool none the less.

Yeah sorry, I may have came off the wrong way.
He is very talented with drawing. But it still looks like a Warthog with a gun turret.

I agree with the stolen technology idea...and you have perked my curiousity.
Just what turret would fit/mesh best with a warthog?
I'm thinking the cobra ringneck turret for some reason.

i didn't even think of the warthog - i can see where it looks like that. google images for the AAV7-A1 - it's a pretty cool vehicle, and extremely versatile. i'm surprised i hadn't come across it before. i was a diesel mechanic in the army for several years, and i've always been really interested in the vehicles used by military the world over. thanks for all the compliments! more sketches in the future.

By all means...see if you can make it. I'm very interested in your sketch seeing the light of day.

If you look at the Warthog, it was modeled after the AAV7A1. They just added the big honkin' missile launcher on the back. In this picture, Sneak Peek is in the position where the real AAV has its turret, which carries a .50 cal. machine gun and a 40mm grenade launcher.

I Really like your drawing though. It doesn't scream "HISS" to me, but it's definitely a vehicle I'd want to see Cobra driving around in.

i'm diggin' the drawing, but something of the HISS look is lost in the translation...perhaps making the tracks of odd shape of the original...also making the front portion a more seperate "head" like on the original( but obviously no canopy) HISS might help...
keep it coming!!!

Nice design. Looks like an AMTRAK with a turret. The HISS has certain elements, the triangle tracks, the front canopy, that should always be present.
It IS however an excellent looking fighting vehicle.

Keep in mind this is just an initial sketch. I do want to try to keep the elevated tracks in the front, and maybe add some armaments under the front of the vehicle (good place for the minigun). I'm rethinking it, not realizing that this is the vehicle the Warthog was based on (although the Warthog is half as long). I'm also working on the crew uniform. Work in progress, and all that.

yup, good ideas usually take a little while and a couple of takes/tweaks/revisions to really come together...very interested to see your the "next generation" in the design process and wherever it goes from there...
keep it coming!!!
