I know in a way I'm tooting my own horn, but I got pretty excited today when "Larry Hama" commenting on my Baroness costume saying he liked it. I'm sure most of you know that Larry worked on the Marvel Joe Comics :)

His penciled work is overlooked a lot because most fans know him as a writer. His pencil work is pretty good.

I use the same way and with my TF ones as well. That's another thing I plan to complete at Joe Con, is my comic book collection, I'm missing about 40 issues of the original marvel run and then I'd like to get more of the UK.

My friend that does Zartan got a great comment from Larry too, you can tell he loves the fandom :)

And saying "he worked on the marvel comics" is kinda like saying George Lucas had something to do with the Star Wars movies.

Mr. Clean & Screamers ain't kiddin - acccording to General Jones at JoeDios.com,
Hama was in M.A.S.H. Season 5 Episode 9 in "The Korean Surgeon."

Ironic how Hama of Japanese ancestry played a Korean on that war series. Now, Byung-hun Lee of Korean ancestry is now playing a Japanese ninja known as Storm Shadow. The circle is complete. This also explains why Hama himself was completely relaxed and open-minded about the ret-con characters in the Joe movie.

Does anyone have M.A.S.H. Season 5 Episode 9?
Please post here so we can witness Hama's acting prowess.

Yeah you said he "worked" on the comics he wrote almost every single issue produced for Marvel and pretty much came up with the entire GI Joe VS Cobra story (with the occasional meddling from Hasbro, Marvel or having to match things in the cartoon)...

I'm just saying it's a bit of an understatement.

I'd say he worked on the IDW comics or works on the Dreamwave comics... Marvel was pretty much his show.

Eh... Hollywood usually doesn't pay attention to what kind of Asian they use for what role.

The character of Storm Shadow was still supposed to be Japanese.

Fun facts about Larry Hama and G.I. Joe:

-He was the last person chosen
-He just used characterizations from his failed "Son of Nick Fury" comic
-G.I. Joe was as low on the totem pole as STAR COMICS, the kiddy line
-They tried to get rid of him but realized no one else knew the characters or cared

Also what kind of meddling from Hasbro do you mean, creating the designs, inventing the code names, making sure their property was being used the way they wanted it?

Meddling like having to introduce ridiculous looking vehicle and costume concepts because Hasbro wanted to sell toys more than anything. I had a friend who worked for Valiant comics when they had the WWF license, and he told me some of the idiotic things they had to do by WWF edict, like if two wrestlers were ever in the same panel, you had to make sure both their faces were clearly visible, even if they were fighting each other. Weird crap.

Hama had some control over the works. When Serpentor was created by Buzz Dixon (the Cartoon writer), after Hasbro told him to make a "Cobra King", Hasbro wanted Hama to use him as well, and he managed incorporate him into the overall fiction, without ruining it. When Dixon made Cobra-La (he was throwing around some good ideas and options, but they liked ALL of it!), Hama refused to quit if he was forced to use that crap! Hama and Dixon never really cared for Serpentor or Cobra-La, but Hama had better sway.

This is why The Simpsons lasted so long - they ignore every and all input from executives, because executives don't know Jack or ****, and Jack had the good sense to stay out of it!

By the way, the 1970s, he was also on SNL, and he appeared on Broadway in two roles in the production of Stephen Sondheim's Pacific Overtures. He did a number of comics - as writer or penciler. Write the file cards for both G.I. Joe and C.O.P.S. He even made Bucky O'Hare and the Toad Wars in '78, based on the successful merchandising of Star Wars (that is, a fiction built around a toy line - before the 80's made it so popular).

That's true.. But I think also the new movie has brought many more fans onto these forums..Ones that have never collected the comics or toys up until now. It's the same thing with Transformers. I've noticed fans jumping in that know nothing of the original stuff, just that they like the movie. You mention toys or cartoon characters from the mid eighties and their totally lost without looking it up on the net.

he was the last person asked... because they went down each office in the line and no one wanted to work on a "toy book"... it was similar to his Fury Force idea and he thought he could work on it.

As for meddling things they asked him to do that he didn't think was right for the story like forcing him to kill off Cobra Commander (of course he eventually brought him back), and the Transformers Generation 2 crossover.

So the last item... making sure their property was being handled the way they wanted :D

Editorially mandated stories often turn out horrible (I could 'cite many examples) I have a lot of respect for Hama... his style of writing is one where he does no preplanning yet he he can work around around editorial mandates he doesn't agree with and deliver a solid story. There are a lot of comic writers who can't say the same...

Very true. In the link I provided, there's another post at JoeDios.com which emphasized this precise point:

OTTO THE OTTER from JoeDios.com: "To watch that show one episode per week when it was still on the air was one thing, but to watch a couple episodes every day all week long, you really start to notice that they use the same pool of seven or eight Asian actors to play the Koreans and Chinese. I know Mako (who was Japanese) and Soon Tec Oh got a lot of work on the show. I wonder how many episodes Larry Hama appeared in.
