No offense to my fellow GI JOE fans.

But why are so many of you selling your collection?

I know some people get in a tight spot, and they have no choice... It just seems like so many people are selling thier collections lately. It makes me wonder why? Its hard to believe all of these people have fallen on hard times...

Do you mean selling the whole thing or selling parts of it?

As discussed earlier today I think a lot of people periodically weed through their collection to thin the herd and save the better items and sell of the weaker parts to help finance, make way for or mentally allow for the purchase of newer and better items.

I'd say this is definitely me. I'm constantly thinning out my collection. I always seem to re-add to the mix, though.

Speaking of which, just added Iron Man 2 War Machine to the collection..he's beyond hyperpimp.

Really? The U.S. is in a recession/depression bro and you find it hard to believe that people will sell their toys? Some of us here eat once a day because we can't afford more and when we see a new toy that looks cool, we can't justify buying it because of the amount of food that toy is equal to. Some have families that their needs take precedence over the individuals collecting needs and simply have to do what is right.

I don't think that most would choose to sell their stuff if it wasn't necessary. I personally know a few guys here that have gone through this man and it sucks to see! I wish it was easy for everyone and we could all just enjoy this thing called G.I.Joe that has linked all of us around the world!

a) demand - stuff sells right now
b) economy - toys are a luxury/ If someone doesn't see them that way, they aren't struggling.

Like others said, I also always fall under the c) thinning out the collection for the exact reasons Buzetta gave.

I think a lot of people jumped on the GI Joe bandwagon when the 25th line started gaining popularity and was the next "big thing" in the collecting world. Now that it's essentially over, those who are more "toy collector" and less "GI Joe collector" are moving on to the next hot property. Some are selling their collection to help fund the next.

Nothing wrong with that. I've done that with other lines, such as the TF Alternators and SW LEGO. Eventually, I just came to the decision that I would rather have a focused, quality collection of GI Joes than a more general toy collection with other lines. As cool as they were, they were taking up space and money that could be spent on Joes (and the LEGO actually helped fund a little European trip as well). I imagine a lot of people are now doing that with GI Joes, and the online community (especially here) will become smaller and more focused.

As stated I don't mean any offense.

I'm sure some people have clear obvious reasons that they need to sell their toys. I'm not being critical. I myself have fallen on hard economic times too.

...That being said, it seems like a lot of people are selling off their collections, and I was just curious...

I also need to thin out my collection, but it seems like alot of people are selling off their entire collection. Maybe I'm wrong about that. I never said I was correct, this is just an observation I've made over the past few months. I am not being critical of my fellow fans motives...

I've had to sell parts of my collection before during hard times. An awesome part of collecting is that during rough times you always have your collection to fall back on. It's also fun when the tough times are over and you can re-collect it. It makes you really apreciate your collection when you get the joy of finding all those treasures again. So those who are selling off because of hard times hang in there it will be so much fun when it's time to re-collect your favorites

I'm in the thinning line as well.. except I'm a chump and buy whole collections, so I'm constantly thinning.
But dude is right, there has been an increase of joe merch on the market lately, a simple search on ebay for GI JOE / action figures w/ total hits around 15% higher than they were 9 months ago can be accounted quite easily, just by considering the influx of ROC / POC into the market, and the oversaturation point that creates a tipping point in the economy of scale.

If collectors chose to buy only 10% of the new lines, of which in 2009 there was around 20-30% more new merch than in previous years due to the movie, resolute, and 25th lines, than they would be over bought for the year 2009.
Now if the average collector has X amount of space, and has a year where the increase is 20-30% more than the estimated 10% average yearly intake, a thinning has to occur for the inflow to meet the amount of space available. Thus, the increase in what seems to be more collectors selling joes in the marketplace, across forums, etc. There was just too much on the primary market in 2009, now the secondary markets are overflowing.
Now go build a time machine.

I, myself have recently had 2 major back surgeries in the past 2 months and have been out of work and on disability since September. And, my disability ran out in February. I hate the fact that I have to sell off any of my collection, but when bills are due, it's hard to justify my collecting when there's kids to take care of.

Yeah but when some folks are thinning out or ridding themselves of their collections, it sometimes comes in handy to those either late to the game or needing to replace items...

I myself was grateful for someone selling off their TF Alternators collection a year or 2 back. When I moved to California, my moving truck actually burned up in a freak fire (I wasn't with it, and my company paid for the move, so I had little control over things and it was a disaster, let's leave it at that) and I lost everything I owned, including 25 years of comic books, vintage ARAH Joes, TFs, and all my electronics/DVDs/computers/backups/etc. All of it.

I was able to replace my TF Alternators set for $1000 in one eBay purchase. That's 27 or so figures at ~$37 a pop, which wasn't that bad since some figures were over $100 and the average was around the $35-40 mark on eBay. I originally had my entire set at retail cost, but unfortunately, it was a year after the line vanished from shelves, and I got helped out a ton by someone selling off.

It's also helpful, and I was grateful for someone to unload their unnecessary collection to help me refill mine.

It always happens when Hasbro stops putting stuff on the shelves collectors want... people get bored and the hobby loses its appeal so they sell out. TJ Max is responsible for me still being around.

For what its worth I prob couldnt sell anything I own because I cut on necks, chest joints, shoulders, elbows and the backs of the knees.

Some days I love my toy collection & other days I wish I didn't own anything. I love my toy collection but it's an anchor holding me down. I'd like to throw my clothes in a bag, fill up the tank & just take off but my stupid toy collection is preventing me from doing that. I've been seriously thinking about dumping it all. But there are a lot of items I won't part with like my Defiant. There's no solution.

I kind of feel bad in light of others selling their collections for financial reasons so please take this with a grain of salt. I am in the chase for a second copy of Amazing Fantasy 15 or Amazing Spider-man 1. To justify buying a second copy I want to raise about $4500-5000 to play with. As of now, between here, rebelscum and ebay, I am about 1/3rd of the way there in order to justify the purchase.

Who knows though... once I have it I may just bank it. Last summer I dumped a bunch of things on eBay and raised more that that. When it came time to go make a purchase there wasn't anything available in the marketplace that I liked so I banked it.

This accomplishes two things. It gets rid of a lot of things that I have now found I can apparently live without and raises money to justify my purchase.

About 4 years ago I sold about 75% of my collection, it was one of the best things I ever did.
Sold all the Star Wars POTF I had, but kept all my vintage stuff.
Sold all my comic book figures except for Super Powers & Megos
Sold all My Playmates Star Trek stuff.
But I kept all my Joes, and now all I collect is Joes, and a lot of the $ I got from selling stuff went to buying more Joes!
It's good to thin things out once in a while, lets you appreciate all the really good stuff you might have.

BTW, the reason I sold my collection was due to the fact my fiancee left me, I moved back from out of state and had no job and had to move into my parent's basement.

But hey, things worked out in the end, only had to stay w/ the folks for a year, got an awesome new woman, and have a very cool job.
And my Cobra Army is friggin' huge!

I've noticed this as well. I can see getting rid of everything else (toywise), but how can you sell your 25th Joes? I mean this is it. ARAH Joes are probably not coming back again... ever. 2007-2009 was like this magical time when we got to re-experience our childhood and get all the ARAH Joes we wanted as kids, but this time we could do it with the appreciative mindset of an adult.

I don't understand troop building (unless it's for dios); one of each, and opened, is enough for me. And when I look at my little collection of Joes all huddled together on the shelf looking like they could take on the world if only they weren't 3 and 3/4th inches tall and made of plastic... it is... well, it is a pure singular unique type of joy for me that I don't think I can live without again. I will never sell my 25th Joes. Ever.

Hey, Wow it's been awhile since i've posted on here. I read this and wanted to share my thoughts on it. I had over 1400 figures a year and a half ago and am down to about 200 maybe. I sold the rest for my family because i felt that i was addicted to collecting plastic toys which when your married and have kids you understand the meaning of life a little better. I used the money for my kids clothes food and other things that meant more to them than me. I loved G.I. Joe toys when i was a kid and still do but i dont have the desire to collect them also due to the fact of the hard times people are going through. I still enjoy looking at the hisstank site and other fan sites but i cant see myself collecting anymore. I hope the rest of you that have that love for the toys continue to collect to keep it alive for the rest. See you all around. Yo Joe.

a. Some need money to live
b. Some need money to fund other hobbies
c. Some need money AND space
d. Some are just bored with it

For me, it's just cleaning the space a little bit. If I do decide to sell the major pieces of my collection, it would be to fund my other hobbies.

I still have my collection ,I only collect joes both ARAH and recent. Now saying that , I have stopped buying all together. If my kids and want something I try to trade for it. More recently I decided to part out my defiant to fill in some gaps. Anytime money gets tight though,I always either work for the father-in-law for a bit or flip burgers at my friends resturant , but I never let the family go without(food ,clothes, ect.)

I've actually been thinking of selling my entire 25th collection due to lack of interest, no new product and space issues. Vintage is my true love so the 25th may go...

With that being said what do you guys think a loose 25th collection (all complete and in good condition) would go for on craigslist?
I have ALL the figures and vehicles that were released between 2007 and 2009. estimated 200 figures 50/60 vehicles/playsets. I'd like to let it all go in one transaction.

Try going to a collectible store today and you'll be surprised on what you will find. People are selling their collections left and right and if you have the money. right now is a good time to buy collectibles.

Even in retail, 5 or 6 months ago if you would have told me that the Target Rhino will be selling for $12.50, I would've told you that you were dreaming. Another good example is the Attack/ Defense of Cobra Island 7-packs. Not too long ago theses were going for $35 plus.

It's just the supply and demand. Money is tight for most people. So a lot of people are selling stuff instead of buying.

I can understand selling your 25th stuff IF you still have your ARAH stuff because Joe is Joe as long as it is ARAH related. I still don't get how someone could get rid of ALL their 25th ARAH and OG ARAH stuff if they love G.I. Joe.

Well i think part of the problem is the guys selling off thier collections are generally not around to say why anymore.

I can only speak for some people I know, good friends I have made on various message boards that now have moved on for various reasons. A few have been economic, but not many. Most have just reached a saturation point. Too much too fast it just got too much to deal with and rather than try to keep up they turned thier backs on the hobby.

Some others have said they got back in to recapture youth and ultimatly father time still got the better of them, after this realization they desided thier goal was unobtainable and sold it all.

Others just got bored with the same characters over and over, Snake eyes, Storm Shadow, ect are all cool but not every wave.

and of course there are combos of the above. point is there are tons of reasons.

Exactly.

I'm sure it isn't the biggest reason..but yeah people are hurting if it's not falling in the "need" catergory and it can bring in some cash to help with the bills...it might end up on eBay.

I myself dodged that bullet and kept my stuff but I will say I'm glad we are still months away from PoC...and as cool as it looks, I will buy very selectively.
