View Full Version : The New Hiss. Whats the big deal?

I was looking over the toy fair pics again, trying to get an idea of what I will be buying this year. This is one of the first years in awhile that I like almost everything I'm seeing except for a few figures. AND...the Hiss. This thing kinda looks lame to me. The colors aren't really cobraish and except for the treads it looks very Valor Vs Venom to me.

^ This. It's a very cool concept, but the colors are off and the fact that it can only hold two troops is rather disappointing.

i think it would be pretty cool if it was able to hold more troops like the hiss II, but the fact that it is not a big solid plastic mono-track looking thing is pretty damn cool ! as far as the colors go, i'll just paint it if i get it in my hands and it's not quite good enough ! i always try to look at the possibilities instead of the shortcomings, lol !

Only thing that would make this HISS remotely cool is if you could put batteries in it and make it run over things at a very fast pace. But oh well.

02-16-2010, 04:15 PM
That's a big problem too. In the demo they made it like it was great that it had a spare compartment for a figure. I can't say until I see one in person, but I think I like V vs V one more

i can also see some pretty sweet customs coming from this version, can't wait to see what the hisstank talent pool comes up with !

I like it cause it has a bit of similarity to the resolute HISS, yes its a little lacking but I thought the cobra air transport from the movie was frickin awesome but when the toy came out it looked like garbage (compared to the movie)
New HISS = WIN
Sleek design without a glass cockpit = WIN WIN!

I love it. I will buy multiples. The 25th Hiss had much the same color scheme: Black body and charcoal gray tracks and turret. I love the look of it (very Resolute) and the way it is designed. It's going to look incredibly awesome next to my Terror Drome. I don't have a problem with the fact that it only holds two figures as the original HISS really only held two figures (okay, guys could hang off the back). Anyway, the more YOU guys don't buy, the more I can! I've already got 18 black 25th HISSES, so I'm thinking at least ten of the new one.

IF there was a bigger HISS that held more figures...
I'd like this HISS much more... but they really should
have a transport HISS of sorts along with
this one.
the colors are disappointing. oddly enough
on the preproduction packaging there's a Desert Viper running
alongside the HISS.

Now is it better than the HISS II, my all time favorite? No.

the only thing Im not that thrilled about is the small weapons, the Hiss was always cobras main tank but the lack of a big cannon makes it seem weak. but I love evrything else real treads, no glass cockpit, no exposed tank commander manning the cannon, so I guess great High Speed Sentry terrible Main Battle Tank

I think the colors ar fine and I especially love the design of this HISS tank. Personally, i think it's a good thing for Hasbro to step away from the traditional colors of Cobra Command. I say do away with the old school Cobra blue and red. :)

no my proto is all brown.
the con ones are green.
i've got my international bounty hunters on the
look out for black ones. but itz not looking sunny.
I just received the first pre-production V.A.M.P. box
today with the HISS on the side... THAT HISS is grey
with red trim.
I think Hasbro got caught up in the Pursuit of Cobra
weather/terrain thing and scrapped the black for
the green camo one to adhere to the POC

Well, if you think about what Hiss stands for, HIgh Speed Sentry, then it makes sense. I don't see any Hiss sluggin g it out with an abrahms, rather, moving in quicly in small groups to destroy infantry and light armor.
Hell, look at the pea-shooter a Bradly packs. You wouldn't think that could do much, but the explosive rounds can easily make swiss cheese out of an armored jeep over a mile away.

That's a damn good point Zefram. The HISS was never meant to be an MBT, but a high speed sentry. I still would have liked to see some beefier guns (especially the gatling.)

You guys are nuts!!! That new HISS V is the greatest thing they showed at Toy Fair this year (next to the AT-AT of course). It looks like it's straight out of Metal Gear Solid. It's one of the coolest GI Joe vehicles I've ever seen. I don't usually buy multiples of vehicles but I'm definitely getting a few of them. I need to paint one or two white for my arctic troops. All the other vehicles are kinda of lame compared to the new HISS.
The new Ghost Hawk also looks like it was ripped right out of Metal Gear so I'm equally psyched over that one too.

Yes, exactly!
The HISS was never supposed to be a heavy tank. I mean, even if you look at the original, the guns are tiny for a tank, and it's got a glass cockpit! It's pretty tiny, too, and only holds two people. It's got a high profile and is probably pretty lightly armoured, given its size and speed.
I like the new HISS - I don't love it, but I like it enough to buy two (maybe even four for a complete troop).

No complaints here. I havent yet seen it up close so I cant vote 100% either way.
But from what I have seen? Looks damn cool..freshened it up without gaying it up. So it holds 1 figure? Big deal..following lore, if its as fast as its supposed to be, its not a "transport"...its basically the TIE Fighter of Cobra...it doesnt bother me.
The way I see it, that extra compartment is either for a hurt Viper, a prisoner...or to get someone close and drop em off...Storm Shadow, a Red Ninja etc...

I think it's pretty cool, and it certainly seems pretty "high speed."
I like how its pretty key to the POC storyline and the environments Cobra can get into with it. Hasbro seems pretty excited about it, I like when they are enthusiastic about a line.
The biggest problem to me is that its called the HISS, like a conplete replacement. The HISS shape is so iconic, its as real as a shape of an automobile in a way, you know? Its been around since I was 5. If they redesigned the standard TIE Fighter, no matter how badass it was, it just wouldnt feel right.

Not to be blasphemous but I never cared for the HISS driver. I think I'm gonna get one of these and use the red and black MARS trooper as the pilot, then try and get ahold of a black and red Resolute BAT to man the rear position. As far as I'm concerned that would be standard personell for the HISS in my universe.

I probably will get a couple of these. I know I'm about to say something that will get me beat in a dark alley at Joecon but I was never really a fan of the HISS. It always looked plain. I was disappointed with the 25th because it didn't even get new detailing like the VAMP did. I liked that HISS II could hold more troops in the back but I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE the length of the guns. It kills the whole thing for me.
I don't have a DTC HISS.
The more I look at the new PoC HISS, the more I like it. Like others have said, it's a High Speed Sentry, not an MBT.

In the write-up for POC, at least on the back of the TRU Arctic figures, the storyline seems to hinge on Cobra's ability to access the environments with new vehicles, right?
Maye that means mulitple HISSes..es. Haven't seen a jungle vehicle yet, could that be the greenish one? Will black, green, and light gray be joined by pink? Will they form a Megazord?
I thought a Habro employee said it would only be one color though, so my dreams could be crushed here.

I really liked that dark maroon proto, but the blackish, greyish, green kind of works too. Pink is where I draw the line. lol

I really dig how they gave the recent Star Wars AT-ST a swappable chin gun, one with missles for fun and a smaller film accurate version. It would be great for the HISS since pulling the launchet off would leave it... naked?

what constitutes a real tank to you?
R. Lee Ermy went into this spiel on an ep of Lock 'N Load. The difference between a tank and other armored vehicles with guns is their intended purpous. A Bradley isn't a tank because it's primary focus is to carry troops to and from the front line without actually getting into the fight (though it has the firepower to give troops support if needed). Self-propelled artillery is for long-range bombardment, and also isn't designed to get up-close (even if they have armor).
A tank is basically a front line, armored, tracked vehicle designed to engage and destroy the enemy and smash through their lines. The very first tank developed by the brits basically set the standard by plowing through the impervious German trench system. The Germans, proving they could learn from an asskicking, employed the same tactics on a far more massive and organized scale for the blitz.

Actually quite the opposite. You would normally want to keep your profile as low as possible. However, the only thing I can think of, it may be useful for transversing shallow rivers, or some such environmental conditions where you'd want the cab up above whatever you were travelling through. Though given how exposed the undercarraige is on this vehicle i really wouldn't want to put it through too much. I guess it might also be useful for firing from a high vantage point, as it might allow you the use of the rear gun and missile launcher.

The other potential use is as an "emplaced" weapon behind a wall or berm or other barrier. Pop-up, engage, and then duck back down before the other side can fire back. Maybe even move to a new position behind the barrier if you can.
But in all truth it's just a toy gimmick. Most of us will probably keep it in "collapsed" mode.

It's not bad looking - of course, a Resolute HISS would have been much better, or even a video game one! My biggest gripe is that Hasbro really thinks the whole Hiss Tank IV was a good idea! Not sure why a tank that raises and lowers would be a good idea, but not sure this Hiss is really a tank but maybe a tank hunter - lack of a huge main gun is a sad loss. Still, it's not a bad Hiss, just not better than DTC HISS, HISS II, or the original.

Well that's cool, acknowledging the history and all. But still, being the new HISS, its got a bit to live up to, so my rose colored glasses may make it tough for me to view it as a signature vehicle.

I'll definitely get it, it seems like fun.

The lifting up is a nice gimmick to sell the toy. Makes it less static. You get a sense of more value for the dollar the more things a toy can do.
And a higher vehicle may protect the driver better in case of mines or IEDs. So does the hull design. Look at the MRAPS the US military is currently using.
I would also think by raising the body that this also provides higher ground clearance in off road situations...if it's not tall enough to flip over. lol

The lack of a huge main gun is a loss? There's only one model of HISS that ever had a huge main gun (The HISS II).
HISS: Two smallish guns.
HISS II: Big F-All triple-barrelled cannon. Two small back-up guns. Surface-to-Surface missiles.
HISS III (Strike HISS): Two surface-to-surface missiles. Micro-Rocket Pod, Heavy Machine Gun
HISS IV (DTC HISS): 4 Missile Launchers with 2 small back-up guns.
HISS V (PoC HISS): One chain gun, one larger cannon/missile launcher, two light back-up guns, possibly modular ports for further weaponry.
I hate to say it but the CAT is the closest Cobra's ever come to a main battle tank. I'd be pleasantly surprised if they'd come out with a "Main Battle HISS" or somesuch, though. Although I'd prefer it in the "Echo" assortment and it looks like that one's getting canned.

This is what I was thinking too.
I never really understood why so many toys have this same feature though. Even when I was a kid I left things like the Razorback collapsed.

It is very VvV. They should have just re-released the DTC version. That was a cool HISS.

It's kind of funny some don't like the colors. If history has shown us anything , there will be some color variations on this HISS too.

I'm not knocking the design - I will knock the price point at 25 as its predecessor was just over half that price! I think it is silly to have it sit up while not having a big gun on it - and then I'm sure they will defend the cost because of making it sit up like that. And the truly sad thing is that they have a Hiss tank most of us like - the Resolute tank or even the video game Hiss tank - that is not released (but there is hope.). The point, for me, is not that it is a bad design per se but rather it is a horrible price point.

I agree with the price. $25 is too much for this toy.

I wish they would have included a track viper with it. Just use the same body and retool the original head. It was 25th proportion.
Oh well, time to commission Asphalt again.

I have to say, I don't really see the price complaint as being valid. I mean, I would love it if the new Hiss was cheaper, but in comparison to the other $25 vehicles, it looks like you get as much if not more then the last ones. Yeah, they rereleased the original Hiss for $15, but that mold has been paid off for years, and even at the time I was surprised that it was that cheap.

Personally, I like the design (it seems a little high tech whereas the Joes is more realistic military) and think that the colors will be better than they looks in the pictures.
What I want to know is why no one is talking about the new VAMP!!!??? :P

I'm hoping for a Stinger repaint. We were robbed of a retail release in 2009, and the last one before that version was in 1998.

I'm all for being positive, it just doesn't really match in my universe.
Maybe Hasbro is right to do Seeing as many of you like it. I myself will pass, but it leaves me more cash for the other cool POC stuff coming out

True, but The Corp! jeep is still $13, and doesn't come with a figure. It also doesn't have the working wench, nor the interchangeable weapons.

I for one love the new hiss . it looks awesome . ok its not the same hiss we're used to but you have to look at the bigger picture .they need to keep the kiddies interested in the line so the need to keep up with the advancements in toy tech . plus the looks of whats new today and what catches kids eyes . this I think will cuz of the design and the gimmiks attached to it

I think it could have been a cool concept if you get rid of the missile launching crap, had another front pilot pod and some a small standing platform like the old fashion Cobra Stun...It looks like an updated Stun ...just need some tweaking.

I love the HISS Tank, especially the moving rubber threads, rotating and extension of the body and a sleek drop down compartment for the artillery controller. I just wish these vehicles would hold up to six figures instead of just two. I don't know why we aren't getting these because the vehicle wouldn't necessarily have to be larger in scale.

Then why not the Resolute HISS?
If there's anything i hate more than the new HISS it's the old one. The Resolute design was near about perfect, a solid, light tank.

Hasbro may not have been able to produce the Resolute HISS at the $24 price point. Just a guess.

I love the new HISS. Love it.
The classic mold needed to be retired. Nostalgic value aside, on the store shelf today it looks like a piece of poop. The new version is a 'modernized' version that looks sleek, deadly, and sexy. Sure it only holds two figures. The original HISS only held one gunner, and a driver, with the option of dudes hanging on for dear life off the back. Most Joe vehicles aside from the very big ones only seat two figures at the most.
I don't know why every vehicle in Joe needs to use the passenger seating chart like a third world bus to be 'cool'.
Does this look like a sane way to ride into battle? Or drive down the highway even?

It looks kind of dinky. It's supposed to be a HISS "tank," not a HISS "Hoveround." I can imagine obese Cobra Troopers motoring around Walmart on one of these things. If Comic Book Guy ever buys a motorized cart to carry his fat ass around, it will probably be a scaled-up version of this new HISS.

I'm gonna be really ticked if we see Hasbro go back to plastic treads after this. I think at this point we could get rubber tracks and wheels on vehicles.
I love the old HISS, but that giant windsheild makes it look about as modern as an AMC Pacer. It's time for something new, and while we all may not be completely stoked for it, atleast they are putting some effort into coming up with new and creative designs.

i agree with you there I have a pic of the Reso Hiss as my BG .and its a sweet design. maybe the reso hiss tank will get a release at some point .after all the one here is cobra's new proto-type.so they could swing a proper reso hiss in for a final Production type Hiss . now that would be cool . Then why not the Resolute HISS?

I love the new HISS. I don't own any HISS tanks, so this will be a treat. I'm very excited for it.
It would be awesome if it was bigger, but then it would probably be Echo-sized and cost 40 bucks like the Night Raven.
So I'm happy with this. I'll probably paint it black and trim it with red, I dunno.
I'd gladly pay 25 bucks for this.

I dug the old HISS 2 out of storage. Thought about spray painting it black.

And the new VAMP looks cool. It certainly looks beefier than the original, or 25th versions and looks like it can take a beating.
I saw the 25th VAMP at TJ MAXX the other day. Thought about getting it, but it looks so...I dunno...dainty. It looks like it could break easily.
I think the Doubleclutch/Bench-Press head used on the figure that comes with it looks a little too big for the body.

Maybe not to be "cool", but it most certainly needs guys hanging off the side to be a proper Joe vehicle. :P
"Real" seating capacity is always a plus too, and makes for more impressive dios. The Rhino can comfortably seat 9 guys, and even the Ice Saber can carry six dudes inside it. On the Cobra side of things, we got the DTC Hiss, which can hold four troopers in addition to the driver and (doomed by rocket exhaust) gunner.
Now, I understand the philosophy of the new Hiss. It's a ferrari compared to a mini-van. It's all about getting in, hitting soft-skin targets, and getting out again fast! I would like to see more proper troop-transports though. Maybe a Hiss II version of this bad boy.

Maybe the philosophy is the fewer figures that will fit in the vehicles, the more vehicles we have to buy, and thus Hasbro makes more money?
