View Full Version : Target Slashing Toy Prices For The Holidays?

Saw this on CNN, thought it might be worth posting. I was at Target on Sunday myself and I still saw the same high price on Joe figures as I have been for last few weeks, but maybe it's a running change or its only on very specific toys.

Target cuts toy prices by 50% for holiday - Oct. 7, 2009 (http://money.cnn.com/2009/10/07/news/companies/target_toy_price_cuts/index.htm?postversion=2009100714)

"Discount retailer is cutting prices on top sellers like Barbie and GI Joe beginning in October, through the holiday season."

Actually i guess here's a list of some of the toys they're discounting:

Pg. 16-17... if that's all that's pretty underwhelming...

Odds are they'll just price cut the crap and leave the good stuff at the regular high markup prices.

I don't see a lot of it getting price cut. Maybe the PITT...

Actually with how many waves of the older RoC stuff still taking up a ton of retail space, a price cut on standard figures might not be too far off.

You might see a $1 off of the single cards, $1-2 off the Alphas, $3 off the Bravos, $5 off the Night Raven and RHINO, and $10-$15 off the Pit going into Christmas. I don't think anything will get any lower than that though.

And I make a decent salary, too.

May be off topic...?...but my Walmart has the $69.99 Deluxe Accelerator Suit Duke with all the bells and whistles down to $40. Says it is a "Rollback" price. Same with Role-Play Snake-Eyes Costume, down to $20. I can see Christmas in October for the ROC Joes everywhere, meaning heavy discounts across the board. Unless they anticipate a strong Christmas with DVD release....

It was inevitable, too much backstock of summer toys leads to Christmas season clearances....

Yeah, and wishing for a $50 Clone Turbo Tank. Because that's the price they should have been the whole time.

I was at a Target the other day. All they had was the usual old stuff. I guess I made a face or something, cause the "toy guy" asked me "if there was something he could help me find."

Usually, I would have just thanked him and be on my way. Being truly dissapointed, I asked him if he knew whether they would get new stuff on GI Joe and Transformers.

He said, that it "has been months since they had to re-order cases" of either. In fact, being a collector himself, as well as the guy who does the ordering, he said he had to "look at ebay just to know what new things have come out." As an example he said his Target "only got one of the autobout twins, who turned into an ice cream truck, but that he never seen it since."

This leads me to infer that if Target wants to have new toys for the holdiays, they would have to have a clearance sale for the items that are not moving. I suppose they can sell it back to Hasbro or exchange it for new stuff. Do any of you know if this is something that stores do?

Remember last year when 25th figs were 5 dollars for like 3 weeks before Christmas? I'm hoping we see something similar for ROC and the MU lines.

These are the times when being part of an online community pays off! Keep an eye out for coupons and deals, ala the TRU 2 for 10 sales, or the Star Wars buy 2 get 1 free sale, etc. They'll be out there.

Target will not sell it back to Hasbro. It's guaranteed that if they put particular toy products on sale or slighty lower the price of them that they will sell out during the Christmas shopping season. Unknowing parents will over buy anything that looks popular or something related to what they already bought their child earlier in the year. After the merchandise thats been sitting out there on the floor is sold out, the day after Christmas retail employees break open those cardboard boxes containing newer toys that just started getting shipped in late November.

When I worked at Target here in Maryland I never told people what had in the back because it was very time consuming to know what/where to look for in basically a huge space of nothing but boxes. However, if I did see something in general getting low on the shelves I would push it to the front of the pegs or ask my supervisor if I could stock more.

During the Christmas season of 2002-2003 I was able to get overtime due to the overwhelming need to overnight stock during the week of Dec 25th-31th. There was tons of stuff that we placed on the floors that we had for a month but there wasn't any space to place there prior to Black Friday.

When Hasbro's warehouse is completely overstocked with merchandise, discount retailers like TJMaxx, Ross & Marshalls buy a majority of whats there for a discounted price. So things like the PIT, Accerelator Duke, and Action Battlers will start to trickle into these retailers sometime in the first quarter of next year.

$5 or better figs at Target would be great for troop building. Could use some extra Elite and Neo vipers. Other than that though, I'm just finding and buying everything I need, even though I may find it for cheaper later.

hell put em at 5 bucks NOW so we don't have to frickin wait ya know....plus that woudl allow them to clear space for the new stuff for christmas....but then that oudl mean retailers gave a S$%T about toys which we all know they dont unless its a stupid barbie or zhuzhu pet.

Okay, just got back from my Target and they already have a price drop on singles! It may be a by store basis but the singles here are now $5.99 each! This isn't a sale or temporary price cut but the price my store is sticking to until they clear their current stock and maybe longer.

Also, Kmart here has dropped to $6.99 per single.

Woo hoo!

All the whining and crying worked! I called up Hasbro and whined and cried about the gi joe prices and how it was too expensive for children! I said, "Well somebody please think of the children!"

But is the price cut temporary or what?

It was a "Price Cut" Tag not a "Temporary Price Cut" tag which usually means a more permanent price drop...I didn't ask anyone but will tomorrow when I'm in the field.

Targets here in MD have slashed their prices to $5.99 a fig but are currently restocking with Waves 1-2. Again, I hope retailers learn not to over order the same Waves of figures because of an anticipated initial craze of a movie toyline. Now that everyone already has the figures they want from these two waves they aren't going to sell for even $4.
