I seriously cannot wait until these are released. I'm all over them like stink on crap.

I'm even more curious to know who the next 15 will be...and if there will be a vehicle or 2.

(If you are reading this post, be advised it is about an original post made back in 2007.)

It has been a long time since this thread was started. Could any of you have ever imagined what has come since? I look back at this kind of stuff and become amazed by how much the new Modern Joe collection has grown. We really do live in a new golden age of GI Joe.

Love you guys.

That is pretty cool. I think it's cool for me to see that the 'tank has been around for awhile. I used to go to the toy aisle just for the heck of it, and then one day I saw these 25th figures and I was floored. I vowed not to get caught up in collecting them; I saw that Firefly was going to be released (he was one of the shaded in pics on the back of the card) and he was my favorite fig, so that was all I was getting. Then, I started surfing the web regarding vintage ARAH stuff, because I'd lost my '84 Firefly and wanted to replace him, and came across the world of customizing. It was this way that I discovered the tank. I think I joined in May 08, IDK, it'll say when I post here in a second. But I love this site. Lots of great help from lots of great people, informative and fun. For all of the complaining and gripes and (sometimes) disappointments, Hasbro did a good thing, and so have you guys. Thanks a ton for being around!

The line has come a long way since then.
I still maintain these figures look the way I remember them looking in my childhood, not how they actually looked, but how I thought of them in my mind. These toys gave me what I wanted. Nice.

And ya'll are right, the I would have expected this to be a longer thread.

Seems like the 'Tank really took off after these came out. I was only vaguely aware of it prior to the 25th line coming out.

It probably would have been a longer thread, but most GI Joe collectors at the time were on other forums. I suspect the vast majority of posters here came onboard after the 25th line came out.

I remember seeing these pics on TNI and Yojoe. There was a lot of excitement over them. A fair bit of controversy, too, since EVERYONE at the time was an "o-ring collector". You got the odd "I'm boycotting everything made by Hasbro" post, much like today with the movie stuff. Heh, everything's cyclical...

I remember clamoring for them. They weren't released in Canada (except specialty shops). I think I paid quite a lot for the Joe set at a specialty toy store in Victoria, just so I could "have it now". Got a couple Cobra ones at a pretty decent price on Ebay shortly after. Remember everyone thinking (even Hasbro) that there was was only going to be 25 figures total? lol...

this is a classic. vintage 2007 when we were happy to just be getting 25 figures total instead of crying that Hasbro hasn't given us a Airtight or Zarana yet. I still remember that feeling of finding the 25th figures in the wild for the first time. I immediately felt like a kid again and you can't bottle that feeling.

Wow thats dead on, the "wah I'm banning all non- o-ring figures" is "waah I'm banning non-25th" It's like the same close-minded people that can't accept new things.

I really just find the old o-ring debate so laughable now... GI Joe isn't a little rubber ring, It's about the GI Joe mythos and characters.

I totaly agree. I havent collected Joes since the 80s and then these damn 25th figs came out and I danced and maybe even cryed alittle. and now here I am a completist every 25th fig and now a hole in my life now that there done. so I looked back to the past and have started collecting the vintage stuff. theres nothing better than getting a vintage vehicle stripping it down and rebuilding it.... I love it

You can't blame them for being upset, especially after what happened when hasbro tried to get rid of the o-rings the first time. Remember the butt plug figures from the early days of the Joe Vs. Cobra line. See example below.

The Joe Vs Cobra and valor vs. venom and spy troops erra was a good time too. The designers actually reinvented characters and used Devil's due designs too. And all the army builder packs were awesome the crimson guard pack, the shadow guard packs, and the bat packs were all great. And Built to Rule was a great concept that was poorly executed, come on GI Joe plus Legos how could you go wrong.

That being said I love the 25th line and I like alot of the ROC line. But the new vehicles don't hold a candle to the vintage stuff. Only good vehicles are the reproductions of the old ones.

What upsets me with revining old posts like this is knowing we will never get this again... :(

Why so mean? Is it not enough to just let it go so we don't get our hopes up? Man makes me miss the old days of hunting hard for these figures...oh well its like ARAH of the 80s, its all gone...

Well, they figured out a way! :D

But yeah, I remember getting back into Joe a few years ago... I'm still pretty thrilled to be, but some of that 07 feeling has been lost due to RoC. I'm just not that excited about the revamp. But I'm still holding hope they'll continue putting out classic designs here and there, cause that'll keep me coming back for more!

Thanks for a good run, Hasbro.

Consider this: if it weren't for the vacuum created by Hasbro's lack of delivering more 25th versions of our old favorites, we might not see the brilliant talent of our customizers that take it upon themselves to create their own Dail Tones, Lifelines, Zandars and Zaranas.

On a self-serving note, I would like to move my vintage/classic/ARAH figures on to other collectors for them to love and enjoy. So this creates a demand for my supply. Now if I culd just bring myself to list them in Extensive Enterprises....

Given most of those customs were made with exisitng parts, that void could be easily filled by Hasbro from the get go...and you would still have customizers out doing them regardless. Lets not make excuses for Hasbo to not make figures were missing...oh leave it to the customizer lol...how about...no

I remember telling myself I wasn't going to buy these figures because I didn't need to collect another toyline. Then the Alts dried up and there were only supposed to be 25 figures. So I bought the five packs. And then, somehow, I was already two waves behind on the single carded stuff. But I got lucky and found everything online for the wave 2 figures. Even better, Target had the Wave 3 stuff plus a 1:18 tank that would look great displayed behind the new figures...

It was only one tank, and it would look great with the BBI helicopters I had already. And again, it was only 25 figures...

Hell yeah. There was a much more exhilarating thrill during the old hunts. Everything that was released was a treasure. Now with RoC... A figure here, a Vehicle there...It's more nerve wracking now.

Remember how it felt to be looking for Wave 1 Single Card Snake Eyes...And the moment you found him on a peg? No paying 25 bucks at BBTS or Entertainment Earth or any other online retailer, but actually saw him on a peg after weeks of searching?

Remember how everyone was angry about all the Buzzers and Scarletts clogging the shelves around Wave 5? lmao.

Good times.

Now look how many peg warmers we're stuck with...But at the same time, look how many more pegs every store has for them? The days of 2 or 3 pegs are in Never Never Land now.

It's still fun to look though.

Alternators were my gateway drug into adult collecting, too :)

I was all into the Masterpiece TFs, then the Alternators, then saw this little "25th" thing popping up... I was only getting them to keep boxed, then they kept rolling out wave after wave... Now I'm addicted and they stopped making my flavor of plastic crack.

Yep, I miss the Alts, now that was a great time. And, you're right, they stand great next to the MP Series.

I can remember where and how each one of them was purchased still, I think. Especially the day I found a shelf full of Grimlocks, Meisters and Swindles but only had the cash for one. Bought Grimlock before my Economics final. Went back the next day and managed to locate the only Alt left, Meister, hidden behind some Polly Pocket stuff. Found a Hound later on at Target across the street too. Alts and MPs that's all I needed to be happy.

Now, I even have a '97 MCC because the Pit pisses me off everytime I look at it.

Oh man, when Alternity was announced, I got excited. Then saw the scale, and got super-pissed. I did get the BB and CJ, who will get here Wednesday at the latest, but I'm not 100% happy with them.

Like you, I can remember exactly where I got each Alternator originally. Man did that fizzle out fast with bad repaints, huh?

Hicks_Royel
12-07-2009, 02:34 AM
A little. I think it was the choice of the repaints more than the repainted figures themselves. Especially Rollbar and Ricochet. If Rollbar had been olive green and Ricochet an RX-8 things would've been different. But it seemed like Hasbro wasn't even trying by then. Plus we never saw Blaster and Red Alert stateside... Oddly enough, I still hold out hope that Rumble will be repainted someday. But yeah, three repaints per mold and still having a 20 buck price tag didn't help the line at all.

Alternity was something I was interested in for about ten minutes. Then I saw the scale and the robot modes and realized it was just another Movie-style spin off with Gen 1 Heads. Plus there's already three different Prime and Megatron figures. I can stick with my Classics Bumblebee and Cliffjumper for now. Same with the Japanese Classics Megatron, he makes a great stand in for going toe to toe with Alt Prime.

The beauty of 25th to ME to RoC is that despite the character choices and their changes in appearance, the figures all maintain a similar articulation scheme. It's so much easier to blend RoC into the other two lines for those willing to make that leap. Not true for TFs where every line has it's own look and pieces don't interchange well. Say, my Classics Cyclonus [one of the best figures ever] being drawfed by my Alts. We should consider ourselves lucky that RoC didn't see the relaunch of simpler articulation or mix-matched figures like the old Joe vs Cobra where vintage stuff was set-up along side the newer figures like the one shown on the previous pages with the overly broad shoulders and bad hip design.

There's nothing like digging up an old thread to see what everyone was thinking when the 25th line was introduced. I remember seeing these in the store at a time when I was out of collecting. I almost budged but ultimately did not purchase any. My urge eventually got the better of me and I researched the figures on the Internet which eventually led me here to the Tank. Soon after, I started collecting again and haven't looked back since.

I couldn't agree more. The updates were far and few, but man did it get everyone excited! I swear its like a feeding frenzy when new updates were discovered or some leaked photos were released. It was hard to read an entire thread because it was constantly updating every second.

But now I feel somewhat disenchanted with it all. It seems like anyone can bypass the hunt and simply buy from the overseas ebay sellers. I'm cool with it, but I just feel it has made joe collecting less fun for some reason I can't explain. I guess what I'm getting at is, the tank was a lot of fun back then. Don't get me wrong, I like how it is now but there was something special and magical(lack of a better word sorry) about it back then. You just had to be there, I guess.

I remember when I first heard about the 5 packs. I looked everywhere online just to see pics. That is what brought me here. I loved the 25th line. I had a good amount of them at first but had to sell my whole collection. Now I am back to almost 100 figures strong and growing. I fully intend to get at least 75% of the 25th line. I am almost there figures wise. Then on to vehicles.

Perhaps a heaping helping of, the thrill is in the hunt and not necessarily in finding?

Personally, I get excited regardless of whether it's 25th Anni related, RoC, or PoC. I just love Joe and right now is a great time to be a Joe fan!

I held out on these all the way until the Stalker wave. Now my 25th / ROC collection matches my o-ring collection (almost)!!!

Hmmm, i had a post in this thread the other day asking why a 2.5 year old News and Rumors thread was bumped by a staff member when there's no actual news.

Now it's gone, and the staff member's post has been edited to reflect staff infallibility.

Aren't there already enough 'We're annoyed about 25th being over/ROC warming shelves' threads already? without toy discussion being shuffled into News and Rumors?

I guess i should look forward to this post being removed too.

Wow, this is some serious necromancy. I wasn't on the Tank then, but I would have gone apesh!t over those pics. Hell, the first time I saw them in stores, I geeked out pretty hardcore.

It's all cool, but at the same time there's soooo many characters they still haven't done it's frustrating.

I hate the hunt. Especially since the closest place that sells Joes is in the next town.

Q. What is a "Zombie Thread"?
A "Zombie thread" is any thread that has not had posts in some time, usually a year old or older, that has post that brings it back to the top of the forum. We usually frown upon the practice of bringing back old threads unless there is new information to be added.
