View Full Version : Storm Shadow (Ninja Mercenary) G.I. Joe Rise of Cobra Review

Storm Shadow appears here with a buttoned up long coat, pants, tennis shoes, fingerless gloves and a mask. He has scabbards for his long and short swords permanently attached to his back as well as a pistol holster on the “skirt” that forms the lower half of his coat. The holster is designed to allow the pistol to only go half way into it. Both of Storm Shadow’s swords both have the Arashikage symbol on the hilt. Storm Shadow has a new hand claw, unlike previous versions of this type of accessory, there is no clip to attach it to the figure’s wrist, it has a loop that the figure holds on to. Storm Shadow also comes with a Nanomite Gun and a Nanomite missile that plugs into the barrel of the gun. Like most ROC figures, Storm Shadow comes with a spring loaded launcher. Unlike all the other launchers, this one shoots a disc instead of a missile. Storm Shadow also has a two pegged Cobra stand.
This is a nice Storm Shadow with great details and plenty of weapons to please everyone. Spring loaded disc launcher for the kids, movie accessories for the movie fans and classic ninja weapons for the non-movie fans. The only two drawbacks to this figure is the skirt which greatly restricts leg movement and the holster on the skirt that only lets the gun go halfway in. A slightly bigger holster could have been used to fix this.
Figure Rating: 7 out of 10

I just bought this figure over here in the UK, the jacket covers his legs, i agree the skirt restricts his leg movement. Looking forward to getting the unmasked version when its released.

It's a nice figure, but I still dislike "skirts" due to the articulation issue. I tried head swapping with PP SS, but that head is way too big to fit on this figure. Also this masked head sits too high (i.e. long neck syndrome) on the PP SS figure.

Not a bad figure. Not sure which version I want more yet.

I gave it a six. That skirt really bothers me. I also tried to switch heads with the PP SS and it was smaller. I figured the skirtless one would make for better ninja movements while the skirt one can sit around and drink ice mochas with Baroness.

I kinda like it better in theory than in practice. If I can't put together a nice display with my PP SE due to the movement restrictions, it loses a lot of its appeal. Hopefully I can figure that out without taking it out of the package first.

I've steered clear of this one because of the skirt and the small head. The other version is way cooler!

Can't take off the sword pack or the skirt!
He is o.k.

One thing I do love about this fig is how white it is. I have it on display next to Snow Job and a wave 4 ss and it makes both of them look yellow as can be.
The skirt sucks for posability, the gun stays in the holster (technically) but doesn't look good. And mine came with a really gimped left hand (maybe bad paint? Had to use a knife to open it up)

...slit the skirt up the middle where the flaps meet, up to the buckle... it greatly helps!!

I used a X-acto knife & did just that. It works well for more extreme type leg movement.

Also, I have a version where his left hand is not open all the way... can only put the missle thingy in it...

I switched out the pistol for a Marauder piece that fits in the holster better. Mine stands on my shelf, straight-legged, and laughs at me for buying him and taking him out of the package in my excitement.

I like it apart from the flesh coloured neck - It REALLY bugs me for some reason. I'll definately be painting that bit white on mine.
But then I prefer the 'Paris Pursuit' version anyway!

As this is the only one I have, I have to say I want PP SS.

I too, cut the coattails along the seam up to the buckle, and I can pose him now as if he is jumping and attacking Snake Eyes. It's a great figure, I like the new swords/scabbards and the intricate seam lines on the figure.

i don't think he is that bad a little boil job and that back pack comes right off i already have one taken apart & primed for a custom he will just be a different color but he is alright who cares about the holster he shouldn't even have a gun to begin with but oh well..

Could be the paint was applied heavily on the hand and has sealed it closed. Same thing happened to one of my ROC figures (I forget if it was this one or another one but I just pulled the fingers away from the thumb and the paint gave away)

great review, i think this version of SS looks good but i dont like the skirt, i really do like the detail on his swords though with the Arashikage symbol on them, i think that looks really cool. i ended up passing on this figure though after seeing him in person.

Thanks for the review!
What's up with all the straps and buckles? Looks like a Liefield drawing.

Nah; SS actually has FEET. ;)
I like this figure a lot more after slitting the skirt thingumy to get more movement in the legs. the swords are nice, and the detail on the figure is excellent. I'd give him an 8.

For the gun issue, I exchanged the Cobra issued handgun with a G.I.Joe handgun in the holster and it fits SO mcuh better.

Its a nice figure, but what to do with yet ANOTHER SS?

The fig is ok, my son got one and the Paris Snake Eyes. I thought I'd let you all in on one little setback you might/might not be intrested in...
He took it into the tub w/ him (and not even a hot one) and the cobra symbol rubed right off by the time he got out.
I'm sure that most of us won't have the toys in water, but I thought this was an important discovery nonetheless.

I got the Paris Pursuit instead, but it took a few minutes to make the decision. I actually like the "skirt", but I liked it on Resolute CC too. I'm a skirt chaser, I guess.
I figured I could always go back and get this version, which seems like a more "official" version, but now that I have PP SS and SE, I'm starting to think ROC isn't a good fit for me.
If I do break down and get more ROC stuff, I think this SS is at the top of the (short) list.

The skirt really does restrict a lot of the ninja action poses that I would liek to put ole Tommy here in but I might come up with some sort of solution for it. Other than that I really do liek the look of this figure. Very urban ninja. I can imagine him doing parkhour (sp?)
I do have a random question though. I have been looking at his shoes for awhile and I can't seem to actually place where I've seen them before. I think they're Adidas but I'm not sure. Can anyone else tell me what they are?
(Random yes, but info i want dammit)

I was thinking they were Adidas too but I know that I don't know jack about sneakers so I definately could be wrong

Ok, old thread I know, but I just got a PP SS and was wondering about head swaps (I see from earlier that it's a no-no) and removing the scabbard (hot water or somesuch? doesn't matter if I can't do a headswap mind you).
But talking about the skirt, unscrew the thigh screws, remove the legs and the skirt slips right off.

As I can see in my recently bought RoC Storm Shadow, I closely looked at his facial features and his left jaw part is not proportioned to his right jaw part. He looks deformed.
