Ok, so as a spin-off of the brilliant Favorite shows of the 80s thread, can some of you gamers post your favorite video game music? Or at least reveal which game? Bonus points for 8-bit NES and SNES/Genesis tunes.

A few of mine:

Castlevania 2: Bloody Tears. Played during the day. I remember when it turned into night, it scared the heck out of me, even in broad daylight

Double Dragon 2: Supreme Master stage 9. The boss theme after the background changes.

Oh and as far as best music ever in a video game? I'll go with SNES - Actraiser or Secret of Mana. Hands down. (Zelda was always good also) oh..and let's not forget 1 of the best SNES games ever.. Super Ghouls and ghosts!!!!

too many to list for me, I have a large library of them. Alot of the final fantasy ones are the best, particularly 4 (US 2), 5 and 6 (I spent hours and still spend hours playing these songs on Piano)(US 3) and 7. Final Fantasy Tactics for PS had one of the best full soundtracks ever. Front Mission 3 had a very good underrated soundtrack. Rainbow Six's Theme song is excellent (they keep improving it) and I hope if they ever make a movie they keep that theme song. There are some tracks in SNES Gundam F91 (japan only I think) that were amazing. The best music with the least to work with are a few songs from Final Fantasy Legend 2 on Gameboy, they really pushed the limits of midi on that thing with Burning Blood, Ending Theme, Don't Give up, and Heartfilled tears (piano remix that I love YouTube - MTK2 - Heartful Tears [SaGa 2] - Electric Light Plaza (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfHPAH6OmPI) ). I could go on and on.
edit: typing that got me sort of excited and now Im going to the piano to play some.

Probably older NES, SNES etc games. Mega Man, Castlevania. But anymore if theres a option to turn the music off in a game i always do. About the only pc game i left the music on was for uh i think Quake or something like that (NIN did it) and that sounded more like background stuff rather then music. Unless theres some reason for me to hear music in the game, radio etc i don't want to hear it. A lot of games start pumping up the music even when your near a bad guy but haven't even seen em yet, it's just too much of a giveaway etc.

X-COM!!! simple and repetitive, but supremely effective in creating a creepy atmosphere... especially if you play at night with the lights out.

a nes game called "tombs and treasures" had some great music in it (the nunnery was a great tune to whistle). Also "street fighter 2010" (nes) has some rockin' tracks, especialy in the scrolling stages. And i'll never forget the title music of "darius twins" (snes)...that fast guitar thing, me and some pals used to "air guitar it" (yeah we where drunk or worse) back in the day. On the genesis a game called "warsong" had some beautiful music in it. On the ps1 the title tune of "vandal hearts" is short, but soul scratching. On the sega cd you cannot find nothing more wonderfuly done than "dark wizard"'s orchristal master pieces. On the genesis "revenge of shinobi" the china town song was pretty bad ass as well. And finaly the "persona" series (ps1 and ps2) velvet room song is just hauntingly beautiful. Now if i can only get the mnibosses or someone to cover some of these tunes....COBRA!

oh yeah, here is one more, phantasy star 2's (genesis) battle theme (boss and regular) and the music that played when nei dies. also phantasy star 3's (genesis) music in the caves or connecting passageways was neat-o. For some reason I always loved the arcade version of ikari warrios title screen...sure its justa bunch of exsplosions and shots to a beat, but i dig it. Also the music for that is kinda catchy as well (nes/arcade) as well as ik2 victory road's arcade music. For that matter gun.smke's (nes...the capcpom) is a nice set of tunes, especialy the ninja boss's. The magic of swherazade's (nes) music is nice as well...well some of it. I did enjoy flying warriors music also (nes) especialy the tusk/moonlight warroir themes. Ahhh, and who can forget the gaurdian legend's music (nes)? I'll remember more later I am sure...ha! COBRA!

Blaster master...how could i forget balster master (nes)! especialy the lava level or game over tune..ha! And magician lords stage intro music (neo geo). The lunar series (ps1/sega cd) had some nice tunes. Golgo 13 (top secret and mafat on nes) has some awesome tunes. The .hack sign tv show is an sweet set of tunes, albiet its not a game but kinda tied into them. And yes warsong was one of the best damn games ever (that one "evil side" music, damn thsta good). Look for exile on genesis as well, this version is sanitized up from the turbo graphix one, but its still a thought provoking game. More when i forget to remember! COBRA!

Xenogears for the PS1 had the best video game music ever IMO. The music was so good it actually pumped me up enough to defeat a boss even when I was getting my butt kicked in the middle of the fight. LOL. The music was so upbeat and inspirational I was all like, "NO... not today... I will not lose to you today!!!" LOL.
