i'd like to see is a contest displaying customs created with or by kids. this would have to be documented with pictures and good faith as there is no real method for verifying kids were involved.
i do many projects with my kids and i'd like to see what other parents are doing with their kids.
i have a large customs fodder collection that i would be willing to allow the winner(s) to pick whatever (1) one item they wanted from the stash.
me and my boys having fun

i would be open to the same leway other contests afford. it's not so much grounded in rules as seeing how many other parents are out there and interested in having some fun and a chance to win a gi joe vehicle of thier choice from my collection of customs fodder that would allow them to continue with more fun customizing. i'm flexible however there should be some ground rules. suggestions?
judging i guess could be public poll as i don't want to get involved as i chat with many customizers frequently here.

Dude. This is a great idea. I would love to make a custom with my nephew.
exactly, tis would not get confused with the serious level of craftsmanship required for many of the other contests. this one would be about sharing the experience and enjoying the results with the bonus of a good chance to get a free vehicle to continue the fun.
i say a good chance as there are likely not going to be many who enter, not nearly as many as the more serious contests anway.

Maybe have a couple categories.. something like 8 and under and then 9+ I don't know how high you'd really wanna go to call someone a "kid" so I dunno...
Maybe someone else can pony up some prizes.. I got some stuff for free from a local guy, I can probably throw in a vehicle or something..
I think pic requirements might be best, maybe make one a must of the kid customizing the gig/vehicle.. what not(like your pic of them spraying theirs)..
As for actual items being customized, I wouldn't limit it, they're kids, but it's a Joe site, so I'm assuming most are Joe fans here.. but if the prizes are Joe themed.. I'd hope someone that enters a custom TMNT wont get mad if they won a GI Joe Jeep in the end, lol
Either way, I like this idea, my son's always asking me, "Daddy, when do I get to customize my toys like you?" :D

would a moderator please contact me if they would like this to continue?
age groups is a good idea but i'd like to keep it to kids, 16 and under maybe. or maybe 100% kids and then kids and helper (parent/aunt/uncle, etc.) yes, this will be just as much of a pictoral documentary. i'd say one entry per child. i honestly don't expect the kids to do 100% of the work but i do expect people to keep in spirit of the contest which is about the kids having a good time.
it would be nice to keep the work joe related being this is a joe forum. like mentioned, i'm not sure how happy a kid would be to get a joe vehicle for a non joe custom entry.
i imagine each entrant can start a thread to document thier custom work and experience. i assume the moderators already have a setup to accomodate this format.

Your best bet is just to roll with it like Iron Will has.. make the thread, have people post their entries in there, or a link to their thread... When you get all the entries or the time limit you set is up, start a poll with the entries and then in the text box, maybe save one pic of each and post it there and/or a link from your first thread.
Hope that helps.. ;)

My parents don't help me with my customizing, I do it all by myself, mostly only figures though. I haven't tried to paint vehicles yet. I can't guarantee that I will be able to do the contest though.

arch2b
04-10-2009, 09:07 PM
why not either or? i assume not all kids will have extra vehicles to customize vs. certain to have extra figures. me and my kids do not touch figures for example so we stick to vehicles. i'd say whatever suits your and your kids talents best.
is there anyone willing to help manage this contest? i am fully behind it however my free time will be shrinking with a looming deadline next week at work, etc. please email or pm me if your interested.

I'm willing to organize it and handle things if you want. i may just need some of the technical help. but i'm down for the kids any day!
ok well, my son is 11 and he loves to custom (he has a big boy kit like dad and everything) i love seeing him come up with ideas. sometimes i think kids are better at customizing than the adults due to their amazing creativity.
i propose this:
1. do age brackets. like 12 and under and 13-16. i dont think an 8 year old trying to customize wants to get their work shot down by a 16 year old that has the money and resources to create way better stuff. (artistic honesty guys)
1a. brackets for ages in both figures and in vehicles. so overall there is 4 winners.
2. base the custom on originality, creativity, and overall effort.
3. pictures should be provided in stages. maybe 3 minimum? i can bang out a custom and let my kid hold it, so i think the honor system is a real factor here.
4. I am willing to donate a carded figure to each of the 2 age brackets. i think it would be worthwhile for kids to get the same treatment as the big dogs. hell, i'll throw in a loose vehicle to the winners of each bracket as well!
5. give the kids 30 days to do it. gives them something to do after school. (keeps them away from TRU and target so i can get the good stuff!!!!)
6. Most importantly.....I want the kids to see how much their efforts are appreciated, WINNERS MUST BE POSTED ON THE FRONT PAGE!
thats just my 2 cents so , if this thing pops off whoever runs it has to contact me for the info so i can send the prizes in. Any tankers that want to add in on the prize pool FEEL FREE! loose, carded, parts, accessories, anything we got. lets do this big for the kids!

i love the suggestions.
i am willing to put up say 3 moc figures and about 3 loose vehicles. this should cover top 3 winners in one age group. can we get enough donations to cover top 3 winners in the 2nd age group?
honor system is what this has to rely on. anyone can get a kid in a picture but i'm confident fraud won't be an issue. you'd have to be pretty low to cheat kids out of prizes.
i'm thinking more pictures are required. maybe 6... i dont' see why pictures would pose a problem. if anything, i don't even upload half of what i take.

please don't see this as my contest. i just wanted to bring up the concept and help get the ball rolling. i happen to have joes to donate and want to give back to the community that i enjoy so much. for me, doing so through a contest that involves kids and customs is what i would enjoy most so i'm more of a facilitator and willing to bank roll a good portion of the prizes. i'll go out and pick up some more moc figures this weekend infact. i'm talking eels and other good ones! i'll pull out my vehicles and get a group together as well.

well, entirely by child may be difficult for the young ones like my 4yr old. he requires my supervision and assistance. he has a hard time applying enough pressure to get the paint out of the can for one thing. i'd add something along the lines of supervision and or assitance to the wording. i think we will be able to spot those not being honest with the pictures presented during the documentation. i'll even try to get video with my camera!
who is going to volunteer to corral the prizes? or does that get worked out by each person donating at the end?
thread organization will be important as well. maybe add simply directions for how that is to be done would be good.

if you don't mind me asking, why? you can pm me if you do not wish to go further in public. i know some parents are fickle about taking apart, painting a perfectly good toy. thankfully mine left me to my own creative ends, to my detriment at times... but i fully understand some are not as open to the notion of fixing something that isn't broken.

i've taken your rules and ammended them slightly and repost to the first post here. these are the official rules thus far and subject to change as the contest grows (hopefully). no set of rules are perfect so please continue with suggestions.
i've set the dates, everyone will have the month of may to complete thier project(s).
i'll be looking to hear from those who have offered prizes. we have top 3 winners for each age bracket to award prizes to. this requires additional donations. even if it's 3 figures, thats good. add it to a prize package and it just keep growing for each winner. i'm not expecting anyone to contribute a large quantity but a couple contributing a little makes it up all the same way. i've already got one age bracket covered.

He really wants to keep going - because Duke comes with the Cobra Trooper so he can customize more Joes and get more Cobra Troopers. :D

Hey arch, any info on what we are supposed to do with the prizes, or just hang tight with them still? Everyones kids customs are lookin' great so far! Who's judging these?

you can mail the prizes to me if you wish. the contest runs to the end of the month.
the winners will be picked by public poll. :) with the guidelines for judging formulated with this particular contest in mind.

This is a great idea for a contest to get all the future customizers of tomorrow started off on the right foot.

The entries into this contest are all winners in my book for having ideas and trying them out. Great job to everyone who has entered all ready and if there are any out there who haven't posted yet. If there aren't any other entries in the contest, the entrants will all enjoy a bunch of prizes.
arch2b
05-17-2009, 06:58 PM
we have enough prizes at this point that i think it's safe to say all kids who enter will get something. i think all the parents would appreciate this as each child deserves some measure of appreciation and reward for thier efforts. it's one thing to make a custom for your own enjoyment but to put it out there for the world to see and comment takes responsibility, courage and the enevitable need to accept and respond to feedback as a constructive development. that is concept that many kids just don't understand and a process i had to thrust into for years in architecture school.
we hard far more express interest in this contest less than a month ago. i'm hoping that they are simply waiting to show thier stuff or still in progress of making them.

My son and I are working on a custom vehicle. It's originally a C.O.R.P.S. vehicle (not a lot to get ahold of in my area of Ks.), but I think it'll be recognizable as the remake of an old school Joe vehicle it's ment to be when we get it done. I hope that's alright.
He is 5 years old and needed help w/ the screws and the spraying, ect. but he did pick out the vehicle and what he wanted to do w/ it. I used YoJoe.com to show him some old stuff and he found one he wanted to have so it's what we're making.
I don't yet know how to post pics in a thread so some help would be appreciated and it'll probably be put up kinda last minute as I only have him 2 nights a week.
He is realy exited and I'm having alot of fun w/ him and the project. Infact when this is done I think we'll make another for myself.

I'm happy to see that the kids have thier portion in this domain, it's a really good idea to get your sons and even your daughters into arts and crafts for them to develop creativity and art skills. I salute the dads that have time for their children, the bond that you will create through this activity is just priceless.

It's absolutely A' F'n' Mazing!!! I sincerly hope that all of the kids that entered something get recognized on the front page. All of the entries I've seen deserve to get some kind of recognition, they all did a tremendous job.
It makes a Joe heart proud to see the younger generation striving to cary on our enjoyment.
All of you have done an immeserably wonderful job of representing something you love and my son and I are both so very proud of you all. Please continue to do what you are doing and keep all of our dreams alive.

Edit: oh. it's over.
