View Full Version : 1:18th The Transformers Devastator: From WIP to completion
Keenan

Altogether the project took just under five months to complete. I wish I had kept track of the money and time I spent on him. Devastator stands at 5'6" to the top of the crane (4'4" to the top of the head) and he weighs in at 59 pounds.
Thanks to everyone who helped make this custom come to life!
From the beginning . . .
In case you don't know the character . . .

The project still has a LONG way to go, but I felt enough was finished, that it was worth sharing.
Here's a small update. (Met up with DaveAnthony at a local Hobby store, and he helped pick out some bits to start detailing this sucker.)
(Didn't realize this pic turned out so blurry- sorry)

. . .Again, please keep in mind, this project is a long way from being finished.
I painted the left leg one color so the parts blend better. I also added a back panel, and painted that as well.

Here are some more pics. I added extensions on the front of the waist- this allows for "play areas" where figures can be posed.
I also managed to get him home, so I can start painting some more details.

"Real artists" get aclaim for doing things like building a dinosaur out of car bumpers. This ranks right up there with that. If I had a gallery I'd ask you to do a show.
If Andy Warhol can view a can of soup as art, I damn well can view your Devastator as art too.

Now explain to me how the heck Devastator fit inside Astro Train.. LOL
I know this was a joke, but I went and looked up the dimensions - to give you an idea of scale, a 1:18 scale space shuttle orbiter would be almost seven feet long and a little over three feet high. So Devastator wouldn't have fit, but DAMN that's big.

I actually sent pics in to Toyfare, hoping to make the magazine. But never heard back from them.
TOYFARE BLows.. they used to be cool... I don't know how many times I sent custom pics when they used to actually have space for customs and never made it.
Once upon a time they even contacted me to freelance their custom articles.. then decided they weren't going to run that spot anymore..
I think they picked it up again years later... I don't buy the magazine regularly anymore... and they can't even keep their website updated.
Wizard used to be so cool but over the years like all cool things.. they loose their focus on their fans and focus on money it seems.
I much prefer Lee's this day and age.

I know this was a joke, but I went and looked up the dimensions - to give you an idea of scale, a 1:18 scale space shuttle orbiter would be almost seven feet long and a little over three feet high. So Devastator wouldn't have fit, but DAMN that's big.
That is true but not quite big enough.. I just wish they had at some point explained how the TF's could change size at will.
Megatron & Soundwave did it all the time.

You guys are great for all your kind works. This is what makes a project like this worth it. Thanks!
to answer some questions . . .
"can you make a costume of Devastator?"
I'd have no idea where to start to make something like this into a costume. Sorry, man.
"TOYFARE BLows.. they used to be cool.."
What I don't like is that they don't reply to emails. I took the time to contact them, they could have at least returned the favor. Not that they had to use the custom in their magazine. And I'm a 10 year subscriber.
"Few questions:"
"Is this your first custom on this scale?"
This size, yes. The next largest would be the Iron-Hide HISS I made.
"What do you plan on doing with Devestator now that you are finished?"
Right now he's in my walk-in closet. I'll put him outside when the spring comes.
"What does your wife think about your hobbie and your artwork?"
They like it. My wife is very supportive and my kids (5 and 6) love to play with the customs I make. And I'm very happy about that.
"I feel sorry for the Tonkas..."
My brother-in-law could not understand why I would "destroy" Tonka trucks either.
"But does it transform?"
If I wanted to invest another 1-2 years on the project it could have. But I'm not one to invest that much time.
"I'm surprised you didn't add the super wing for his chest, given the amount of details you already added."
That was one thing I went out of my way to avoid. Can't stand the look of it on the G1 version. To me it makes no sense. I think it's just a filler to give the figure more body.
"U see about time u post it over here John! Welcome to another board lmao.
Again nice work! Now take them apart and make them all transform by themselfs! Lol."
Make some customs Gil. Come on, I mean really.
Glad to see you're here too.
"Are you accepting nominations to be my new god?"
lol. I couldn't do that. But thank you.
Again, thanks for taking to time to check Devastator out and post.

John,
You know how much I love this custom! I wish I lived closer to you, so that that I could play with him. I know that you have made 2 of those Ironhime / HissTanks. You really are an artist with your vehicle customs.
Glad to see you getting more praise for your great work. Keep it up!

It looks really cool! Question: Did you consider painting it yellow like the original Devastator? That would look awesome!
Keenan
02-05-2009, 09:40 PM
The original was actually green. There was a knock off that was yellow later on.
I wanted a military look for this one.
Lance, any time you want to travel to Jersey I'd be glad to have you over.

Ok...First off...THIS IS AWSOME!!!
Second, this should NOT be in the TF/Joe crossover custom contest...THE ONLY REASON....
It's damn near 6 feet tall, it's 60 lbs....and the dude's been working on it for the better part of a year.
He's putting the rest of you to shame (and no, I'm not entering into this contest) Several months back, I saw a front page by this guy, and big D looked AWSOME then...NOW...
Dude, I bow to you... Congrats to that.
But theres a lot of peeps on this site who have done great things with small pieces in a small amount of time. Ram/Wheelie, VAMP/Hound, the Cobra-Con two piece set...done as soon as the contest was stated, while this ginaormous undertaking has taken MONTHS to do. You had a head start son! While raising the bar, give the lil' peeps a chance!!!
Keenan
02-05-2009, 09:48 PM
This isn't being entered in the contest. Actually I didn't even try to enter it. Also, it doesn't transform- I believe that was part of the rules.
I do appreciate the feedback though.

just curious whats your your other half think of "devastator"? and were does he reside?
Keenan
02-05-2009, 10:02 PM
My wife, Sandy, likes him. I'm very fortunate that she appreciates this hobby, and supports me. We've been together for almost 13 years, and I've been collecting toys that entire time. She actually went with me to the Joe Con back in '02.
I've got Devastator in my walk in closet. That was the most out of the way spot for the winter. Plus it's cool seeing him when I go in there.

What a waste of nice Tonka Toy vehicles!! No really.. I am just kidding. That is the most awesome thing since that Custom Flagg, Joe HQ and Terrordrome I have seen on the Tank. Now give us a secret... you can tell us... is Michael Bay using your Devastator in the new Rise of the Fallen TF movie?? Come on now.. let the cat out of the bag!! That would be cool if he did because it looks excellent!!!

Old school original was green like the cartoon...i think the one in the 90's was yellow, which was stupid imo to do that.

Not really. Construction vehicles come in multiple colors, depending on the company that owns them and the country where they're located. All three versions of Devastator's colors (green, yellow and orange) can be found in real life.

OK, I've been looking at this for days now and trying to figure out just how cool it is. First, let me say that this thing is amazingly awesome, and just a beast to see through to completion. It looks fabulous and you are the man for doing it.
I would say after looking at it I always thought it was missing something as the chest area seems bare, and then I realized that Devastator's wing was still missing off his front. If you added that I think it would help the overall aesthetic of the piece. After all you put so much work in it already....:)
I think it would help it look even better, but Devastator is amazing congrats an a true masterpiece.

John,
Radicons is the custom section of the Transformer World 2005 newsite. The site address is Transformer World 2005 (http://www.tfw2005.com/). Then just hit on "boards" and you'll see the "radicons" section where some of the best Transformer customs are at. Its one of my main web "stops" every day.
Very nice
What do you plan on doing with it? Have you ever been to a BotCon and seen the one there? Similiar in that it was made with Tonka Trucks.

Keenan

Appreciate it.
It does not transform and he was front paged sometime in '08.
Since this got bumped I'll add an update.
In April of 2010 we had some severe rain. At the time I had Devastator around the back side of the house, standing at the edge of my kids sand pit- an 11'X11' area of just sand. The rain washed out the sand from under Devastator's right foot and he fell. I didn't realize but the plastic knee joint broke apart. So I moved him under the overhang on the side of the house. Over the next year he slowly began to lean forward- as the knee joint gave out. Finally this past July I addressed the problem and replaced the plastic joint with a metal bracket. Now he stands up straighter than ever!
Here he is with his legs removed.

Still need to replace a few parts that had fallen off in the storm, but here he is repainted and ready for another three years outside. :-D
