View Full Version : A good way to fit Cobra-La into the Joe universe.

I've thought of a way to meld Cobra-La into the Joe universe that would keep the characters and story line in the mythos, but still be able to seperate them from the main line...
Make it a terrible nightmare or hallucination that Lt. Falcon got while being tortured or interrogated by Cobra agents. Basically, make it a dream.
Even though a lot of the Movie was not even in his point of view, the general concept of these creatures living under an ice dome in the Himalayas could be told this way.
Perhaps a Cobra scientist (Mindbender or whoever) implanted a device that would take Falcon there from time to time kind of like Baltar in Battlestar Galactica. He'd be a double agent perhaps...
I think it's a great way to explain Cobra-La and keep them in the Joe mythos... what do you think?

I remember when I first saw the Cobra la pack in stores, before the movie, and didnt have a clue as to what it was all about. When the movie finally came out, I was totally disgusted by it. It went way too science fiction for me and I totally hated what they made Cobra Commander into. Being a Marvel Joe comic fan, the movie was total garbage for me. Even tho the character designs were kinda cool, the story ruined anything that had potential.
I dont know about a hallucination, but I always thought they could have made them to be some type of genetic experiment that rebelled or something.

I did like the Unicron/Cobra-La thing. But then that's an Alt-Universe thing.

In my current Joeverse, I chalk up Cobra-La as part of the whole Venomization schmele with Cobra.

I prefer to imagine that Cobra la never happened.

But it's not going away!!! Hahaha! So I'm trying to find a compromise that fits in nicely...
Remember the cartoon episode when Shipwreck had a formula in his sub-conscience mind and Cobra totally had him convinced he was married with a daughter in order to get it? I was thinking that would be perfect for Falcon to get captured, brainwashed or tortured and Cobra-La was a result.
Oh well... I think that's how they need to handle it.

I started writing a fan fic years ago that I need to finish. In it Cobra-La and Serpentor were creations of ILM that Cobra Commander had Lucas make for him as Lucas' Skeleton in his closet was that Cobra Bankrolled the first Star Wars movie. CC had them made so he could concentrate on other projects and not be in the spotlight. In the first act Serpentor is ranting along as usual and CC comes out from behind the throne and puts a .44 between his eyes.

Oh, My GOD!!!! Everyone hates Cobra-La? Am I the only one who liked the idea of a race of very evil puppet masters that were behind the whole creation of Cobra? I must be, True the movie was a cop out, it was not as good as earlier 5 part mini series from Sunbow, but I blame that brat kid who locked his ass in the closet when Optimus Prime was killed on transfromers (the movie would have went to theaters but because of the neg media attention caused by the Death of Optimus Prime we the joe collector got the quick treatment) hell, Cobra-La was a placeholder name, but it was rushed because Sunbow was under orders to get it out before the end of the contract (they were as pissed as most of us when the contract went to DIC). Cobra-La would have been much better if given the proper storytelling, hell I could poke holes in the M.A.S.S. device, or the Revenge of Cobra, how bout "Fatal Fluffies"? but everyone has an opinion about G.I.Joe the animated movie. I like what was attempted, I understand now things that I didn't before. (You want to poke fun at something how bout Reel FX, CGI was weak on some of it, some of the voice actors didn't know enough about the history to do the voices right, and the Whold Venomous Maximus (serpentor rip off stank donkey doo)!!! But hey I bet if they did a poll of Pythona or Maximus you'd see that Pythona would rule the poll!

TKP, I think you nailed it best when you said "given the proper storytelling".
Cobra-La doesn't suck, the story behind Cobra-La sucks.

I think they would have been better off using the huge roster of characters they already had. They didn't need to add cobra la in the movie imo. Keep the new joe recruits but just create a better plot for the movie.
Heres a more modern example:
Imagine if in the movie(2009?) they decided to create a brand new enemy that nobody has ever heard of and they now rule Cobra. CC, Destro, Baroness etc are only small roles in this live action film. They use this entire movie to build and create a brand new Cobra. I'm willing to bet you would be very pissed off.
