I think (not in order)

"Colonel Courage" with his very bright florescent green accessories.
"Capt. Gridiron" with his football helmet and football grenades.
"Back blast" - Gi Joe gas and toxic fumes specialist?

"major altitude" was always a lil sketchy to me
also "skidmark" puts a smile on my face every time.

Foolproof
12-23-2008, 01:18 AM
Gridiron of course.
Robo-Joe is just ludicrous.
Recondo always sounded goofy to me.
T'Jbang. Just WTF?
Space Shot is just lazy.
Horror Show is a really cool name for a really crappy figure.
Windmill. Who's his arch enemy? Don Quixote?
Mega-Viper. Lazy.
Monstro-Viper. Again with the lazy and shouldn't even be in the line.

Zoltron

"Ice Cream Soldier"

"Backblast"

"Snow Job"

Wait, Backblast was suppose to be the joes defense against the toxo vipers? I thought he was some missile specialist with "GO ARMY" or something.

Grid-Iron was a college football star at Westpoint. So after he graduates and becomes a military officer in GI Joe what are they going to call him? It's not anymore ridiculous than any of the other guys who are named after their backgrounds or other interests.

I think we should give our real soldiers football shaped Grenades because nothing says America like football and blowing shit up.

P.S. Blowing stuff up is a good thing.

The Canadians would obviously have some sort of hockey gimmick. Perhaps rocket powered Ice skates with razor sharp hockey sticks. They'd also have nicknames like Slapshot, Highstick, and Barry Melrose.

Skidmark. OK, that one was just wrong.
Crystal Ball. At least the name was a lame as the figure.

Tollbooth. Dumb name for a dumb job. And if you look at the figure face sculpt, you can't tell me he doesn't look like he has downs syndrome, or is at least totally hammered drunk. Also, he came with a hammer, which was actually cool because joes needed building implements.

windmill was a horrible figure with a horrible vehicle, i took the "propellers" off an used it as an attack boat

Yeah that jet was silly, but I liked it because I had read an article in Poplular Mechanics about the experimental design it was based on. It never went into the prototype stage, but it was looked into around the same time they were planning what would become the osprey and stealth fighter. Anyways...

I stopped caring about the idiotic names that the idiotic figures were getting around series 7, also when I stopped collecting.

Most of the codenames I don't like are more because of what they were referencing than the name. Duke is an obvious reference to John Wayne. The Fridge was a lame NFL tie in for a popular team. Sgt. Slaughter even as a kid made me wince for his cornyness.

When I see Windmill today, I think "What the hell was that?"

Say what you will about Raptor and Crystal Ball, at least they aren't Windmill.

DarthBrett
12-23-2008, 06:11 AM
Hmmm, Hardball sounds fine to me. He liked playing hardball since he was an ex-professional ball player. Beachhead is an actual military term so his nickname is actually pretty cool. I never understood why Chuckles was called....Chuckles. I think he was supposed to be a dead serious, no-nonsese kind of guy maybe? Honestly, most Joe code names were pretty cool and only a select few were kind of lame. Recondo is actually another military term, it's the word reconnaissance and commando combined (I think it was used in the Vietnam War for the Tiger Force platoon).

Hey man..don't front on Tollbooth!

But, as Ive said before, growing up in southern cali, I had no idea what a tollbooth was...I would have understood 'fotomat booth', yeah, but there werent any tollbooths in L.A. at the time of my youth.

how bout:

Grunt (I know ita a military term, but to a kid...heeheehee)
Snow Job (see above)

I think Alpine is a great codename for a climbing expert.

I think Capt. Gridiron should have just been "Gridiron."

Head Man was crap, like most of that whole line-up. Sounds like a queer superhero's name.

Windmill- dumb.

Chuckles- Ironic name because he never talks too much in the cartoon. He's a quiet guy. But a good nickname.

Robo-Joe- bad concept, bad name.

Skidmark- mentioned above, i think we can all agree should have been something different.

even the joe comic book was produced by marvel, they couldn't say "Ghost Rider" or "Ghostrider" because of the trademark/copyright by Marvel. Especially if the comic is to go into trade they would have to negotiate permissions, royalities and god knows what just for using the damn word even though kids knew they were talking about a Joe pilot and not some flaming motorcycle demon from hell that walks on the side of angels.

Oh and Captain Gridiron and Colonel Courage were stretching it but when they hit Ice Cream Solider...to quote Kitty Pryde regarding Negasonic Teenage Warhead "Wow, they have ran out of all the good codenames"

Troynos
12-23-2008, 10:14 AM
Ice Cream Soldier is the only really crappy one, Super Trooper is a close second.

Skidmark, sure it's got the funny part, but it was in reference to the mark left by tires on the ground when cars would skid.

All the code-names had to do with the "job" and/or their personality. Tj'bang is an exception but there had to be some japanese meaning to it.

Backblast was in reference to the blasts that came out the back of his missile launchers when he fired.

Snow Job was in reference to his personality and pulling cons on his teammates.

Captain Grid-Iron was in reference to his West Point Football days and his rank.

Ice Cream Soldier was just stupid. It's a stretch to connect it to being a flamethrower. It was supposed to be a joke kind of thing, it even mentions in his filecard. The name was supposed to make Cobra Troopers think he was a joke. Which is an okay idea, except it would work only once. So in the end, it's just a horrible name.

Blue Balls - Baronness' dominatrix alter-ego
PMS- Joe interrogation specialist, tho she only worked 5 days a month.

I always liked the name Chuckles, because it was supposed to be ironic since he didn't have much of a sense of humor. It's like calling the fat guy Tiny.

Snow Job was cool as well, because a snow job is a con.

Some of the names were really dumb even though they sounded good. Clutch is one of my favorite characters, but Clutch is actually a dumb name. It sounds good though.
