My wife has graciously let me join to the extent that I have. I have most of if not all of the 25th ann Joes except for a couple of variants. My army does have a couple of officers though. I have memberships to Hiss Tank and Joe Sightings so I keep diving further into it. Darker and darker...

Well, PCS, Troop Building means exactly that...building an Army of Troops.

Remember the old cartoon? When there were TONS of Cobra Troopers ready to fight the Joes? Well, the same premise carries over to collecting. Whereas the Joe Team is primarily built around "Core Characters", Cobra, on the other hand, has more "Troop Builders" than core characters. As such, it defeats the purpose to send your lone Trooper in to battle against a squad of Joes.

Now, on the other hand, if you have 30 of them.....

Well, I was going to say that G.I.Joe is in for a fight...but since Cobra Troopers have no aim, it really doesn't matter in the long run, lol :D

Glad to hear that your wife has let you get in on the 25th fun!

I just got into army building myself. I use to collect in the late 90s and thought getting one of each was enough but now I know better. Army building with the 25th is so easy and now I have gone back and have started army building about 11 different cobras from 82-86.

I'm trying to keep my 25th Army Building down to three of each trooper but it's not always easy to put these guys back. That's not much of an army I guess. More like a small squad.

Same here but the biggest reason for me is that I just don't have a lot of space in my apartment. It's a bit of a dilemma.

Army building isn't a problem for me since I'm not FREAKS :D like the rest of you collecting hordes of cobra/crimson/ninja and what ever Hasbro throws out in the future. I'm just a mild collector since I don't think I'd want my office space being over run by an army of cobra! The only army I have are the red ninjas and thats it. The other cobra soldiers are regulated to 3 to 5 each so I have space for the upcoming 25th line. I'm always amazed when I see you guys show off your collection of army cobra or whatnot since I think that looks pretty cool. I'll leave the army building to you guys...but post pics so I can say, COOOOool!!".

My current COBRA army stands about 750+, comprising both RAH and new sculpt and as soon as I find some 25A CGs, 25th sculpts as well.
Why do I army build? Because not only am I a COBRA fanatic and always have been but it's been COBRA's varied and stylish troop classes that have always been drawing me back to this particular action figure line.

Waaa! Well, up until very recently, I never built an army, I never understood it, and I had absolutely no interest in having more than one of each figure that I liked. . .Buuut, with the 25th line, the troopers (and the figure generally) are just too bad ass. This line is like a dream come true for me, and as I started finding troops in the store from time to time, I couldn't resist buying them. Now, I've got about 11-12 troops combined (that's all the variants, etc.), and I've got about 15 more coming from recent orders on Amazon.com. I'm becoming addicted to this like I am to getting Minimates (which are more addictive than crack, stay away at all costs!). . .its becoming a problem.

I was never really much of an army builder as a kid, but now that I'm much older(wiser? I don't know I still play with toys) I see the point in having more than 1 cobra soldier. I remember the only cobra soldier I had as a kid would always stand guard at the entrance to my make-shift cobra HQ, but who in their right mind would post 1 guard for an HQ?!? It's just funnier than hell to me now.

Troop building is a terrible sickness that will take over your life. I've heard these things referred to as plastic crack many times, but I believe that is a misrepresentation (I don't think too many dealers accept credit cards). For that reason I believe these Joes are a far more serious problem than drug addiction. Troop building for me started out simple, 3 of each trooper, then it was 6 but only on the weekends. Before I knew it I was leaving work early to look for troopers, buying them on ebay, anything I could do to get my hands on them. The red logos were my trooper of choice, but I found myself settling for the cheaper easier to find silver. I started hiding them all around the house, lying to my friends and family. Staying out all night hunting for them. I kept telling myself "just one more and we'll stop". I use to do a little but a little would'nt kill her, so a little got more and more...
My name is Fridge, and I'm a Troop Builder

Damn man thats a hillarious read! Thank goodness I can control myself from the plastic crack, well sort of. Whenever I have the urge to take off and go to the stores, knowing that there isn't any on the pegs I go look at my little army of cobra troopers. An army of three! I feel better after I look at them for some strange reason...

-picks up a trooper and smells the the top of the bald head-

-mmmm feel better now-

LOL!

My first attempt at troop building was in 83. It was after xmas and me and my mom was t 3D clearance shopping. On a end cap was a display of Cobra Officers and Soldiers marked $1.25 each . I had $40.00 xmas money and I knew she wouldn’t let me get more than 1 of each so I told her I was going to the lobby to play video games and shot straight to the end cap. With the help of a employee ( didn’t think of getting a cart) I made it to check out with 15 of each and out to the truck to start opening them and wait for my mom . It was worth the Butt busting I got when she saw all the open packets

6 with 1 being an officer figure of some kind, so 5 troopers.

If I can't make a second full squad I won't bother with it, but rarely do just cause of space concerns.

I have a serious problem with army-building at times. Blue-shirts, BATs, Vipers, IGs, you name it, I got more than one. I even have five of the Para-troopers from the Best of 80s set. K-Mart Neo Viper? Two and counting. Hell, I started army building RoC Flash because I thought he might look good as a Viper.

When I finally get a decent camera and get these guys lines up it's gonna be impressive though.

I don't have a lot of space to display my loose collection, so I do squad building. Each cobra army builder, I have 4 on display (not including an officer), and 1 of each army builder moc. I would go more nuts with it, but like I said I don't have a lot of space and it gets expensive.

It really is addictive.

There's just something insanely awesome about standing a tooper 6 deep, and 12 rows.

You just look and go.....yeahhhhhhh.

But I've recently set my brain that 6 is enough of any trooper.

Its a nice little squad and fits front to back on my shelf nicely.

All depends on the individual. Just my own preference, I'd say for an actual "army" the minimum would be 15 (5 rows three deep), and that's for a small dio setup. Now if you want to have CC addressing a veritable sea of blue, get ready for the long haul. >_>;

So I guess most of us are actually squad up to brigade builders. The real army builder (50,000+ troops) would be quite the Joe collector indeed.

I was 10 in 1982 and have bought most of my own Joes from the beginning. Back in the '80s I got at least 2 of every trooper, and at least 4 of basic guys like the Cobra Trooper and Viper. Getting more than 1 of a certain vehicle was even harder, but I did have 2 HISS tanks. I always wanted a Cobra "army" so I could create sweet setups with my Joes.

I acquired a couple of collections while I was in college which definitely helped grow my Joe and Cobra forces, but I always wanted to go back and somehow get a ton more Cobra Troopers, etc.

When the 25th Anniversary line came out I saw my chance to do things right. Although I'm not big on setting up my troops in formation, I do collect them in squads and platoons with about 4 troopers for every officer. Mostly in groups of 10, some elites in groups of 5, and basic troopers in groups of 20.

My eventual plan is to set up semi-permanent dioramas on large shelves, and I should have plenty of Cobra forces to go around. :)

thats not even a squad actually, or even a team... which make up squads. i think at a minimum you need between 6 or 8 troops then an officer and commo guy for each

I army build. Right now I am doing 25th red ninjas cause in my verse Storm Shadow is the leader of the clan and the red ninjas are the clan. I also think they are cool looking. But how come other people do it? Like whats the point of having so many cobra troopers or I saw one guy on here with a crap load of serpentors. So..whats the dealie yo?

For some it just looks badass on display, others (like me) do diostories and need more in any given scene

Should have posted this last week! I just got rid of 9 red ninjas

as a non fanatical joe collector,(i buy just the figures i like and usually for customising purposes)im intrigued by the concept of army building,so i was wondering if some of you pro army builders would be able to explain what drives you to army build??how many people on the tank actively build??is it common amongst joe collectors??is it down to a certain figure you love so much you want multiples??is it because you like having row upon row all lined up??or do you feel army building is needed to complete a collection??let me know your thoughts!!

okies i'll start then . I army build but initially i only wanted to get say 4 ot 5 of a trooper type figure .but as time has passed one i've ended up with something like 40 cobra blue shirts. dunno what it is about them I just love seeing them in a huge rank and file pic.
I don't feel the need to army build every version of a paticular character (ie i don't need to have every duke made ) but some I take exception to . Destro and firefly, major bludd fav cobras flint and beachhead on the joes..

Interesting question. My principle reason for collecting figures is to make dio-stories. To that end, I army build certain figures (IGs, various Viper types, etc) as my story requires.

it starts out with the casual interest that it would be cool to have multiple of the troops like you always wanted as a child, then evolves into a compulsion where you can't stand the thought of not buying a figure you know someone else certainly will buy and you start buying them just to keep others from having them.

to me it's the same reason why I enjoy Warhammer 40K when you have enough figures for a full scale battle scene (or even a small skirmish it really seems to come alive). It's gorgeous in it's own way.

i army build, cus i want to make a whole room a dio, you can't have a big dio unless you got an army.. i build 10 of as in figures these days, i started out aiming for like 50 of this 25 of that.. it got to rich.. so went to 10..

I don't army build, per se, but I have bought multiples of certain figures on several occasions for 1 of 2 reasons: 1)they make great customs or 2)they are such a good all-around figure that you can utilize them in many settings. I don't do the whole lining up thing, although I think it is very impressive.

I bet I've bought close to 20 RIA Dukes from the RoC line, but I've used so many for customs that I don't have an actual intact RIA Duke. I did the same with Para-Vipers when they came out in the ME line. I just couldn't pass one up.

Anyway, that's my thoughts. I know there are differing opinions because we have quite a few people here with IMPRESSIVE armies!

for me... as a kid, I was always ridiculously frustrated having joes attack a cobra base and only having like one cobra soldier or one bat or one viper to defend it.. was sorta lame, since soo many swarmed the joes in the comics, the cartoons, etc.
cobra was an organization, and mine just felt like a detention club where 2 dudes have missing thumbs and the rest have mismatched rifles.
so now that I'm an adult? I believe a bit of over compensating for childish impulses to build a cobra army to mimic how I thought Cobra should have been.
That, and boredom.
There is an absolute thrill to opening a joe, it's a small childish bit of happiness that no matter how many joes I get, is still there.
So when new lines are further apart, it apeases that need.

For display purposes (when I someday have the room to display).

Some of it is from when, as a kid, I only had 1 of each and it's hard to have battles when there are only 5 bad guys and 20 good guys.

And my OCD telling me that I need some squads.

I go with this cuz I also used collect 40k (joes have side tracked this ) and I have enough armies(I currently own a sizable force of 1500pts for every army in the 40k universe)
to cover a two large rooms.
did I also mention I have several Titans for 40k scale too !

I only started army building with the ME line. I used to go into the store and see nothing but Vipers. I really got into it with the IG/Viper CP and really liked the look of multiple faceless legions to menace my Joes. Availability and finances(and the wife asking "don't you have that already?") Kept it reasonable but I would love more troops. I kept things at about 5 but IGs, Vipers and Mars troops went to 10.

I army build. Why? Well, I like to set them up and take pictures. It gives me joy seeing a well set up army of soldiers lined up in formation. I don't buy multiples of named characters though, unless it is a new style change or outfit change. I also enjoy army building vehicles for the same reason stated above. Army building is just another way to collect.

For me it's all about making up for the childhood pain of only having one lonely cobra officer, trooper, viper, etc etc... for my cobra army.

I try to get at least 5 of each now... OCD demands it.

Here's what I'm troopbuilding so far:

5 defense of cobra island strato vipers
5 rise of cobra jet pack strato vipers
5 paravipers
5 roc paravipers
5 red ninjas
12 vipers
13 cobra soldiers (all with black masks and black webgear only)
6 cobra officers
5 cobra vehicle gunners (dark gray and red soldiers)
4 stinger drivers
9 snow serpents
11 crimson guards
7 cobra divers
5 eels
2 roc eels
4 iron grenadiers
5 a.v.a.c.s

And like most people are saying- It just looks awesome seeing a group of the same figure set up on your shelf, instead of just one of each.

I also troop build vehicles too... There isn't enough space on this thread (or in my room, really) for all of them- But I try to get at least 3 of everything. Except H.I.S.S. tanks.

Can't have too many H.I.S.S. tanks.

I troop build but rarely. My blue shirts are at 9 I would like one more than done. I have 5 Para vipers which I think would be cool in a helicopter. The Crimson Guard are my favorite and in time I intend to build a beautiful massive army of red figures in the same pose with the same weapons. I love the Python Patrol CG guys too.

Well its just such a nice sight seeing a picture of a massive cobra army ready to battle the joes.

My 25th/ME Troops:
4x Crimson Guards (Freds)
8x Cobra Officer (grey rag)
76x Cobra Trooper black rag/silver emblem
44x Cobra Trooper red rag/red emblem
6x Cobra Trooper black rag/red emblem 5pack
19x Cobra Bazooka Trooper
4x Stinger Driver
9x Range Vipers DOCI
3x Alley Vipers DOCI
6x Resolute Troopers Blue

Though I decided to Not include Air Troopers and Legion Troopers & 4 of the Nightwatch Troopers in my Cobra Army anymore, so I got them left over for trade if anybody is interested.

Armybuilding is an addiction.

That would be hoarding sir. This will raise an interesting question.... are all troop builders hoarders?

I mainly do it because I have OCD(hoarder). My OCD(hoarding) likes me to have multiples lined up in rank.

Also, my mommy isn't there to tell me "NO NO NO!" anymore so I just say fuck it....... COBRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!

I didn't start army building till the 25th line came. I was able to get each wave as it was released and at the time the price being $5-$6, once caught up on current waves, I decided to army build. At first it was 8 of each(7 loose, 1 MOC), but with prices going up, I dropped down to 5 each, since I'm no longer a MOC collector(unless they go back to retro packaging).

I troop build for realism. Cobra is known to have legions of soldiers, why have a couple? I was inspired by a display I saw at Knotts Berry Farm when I was a 5 years old (1985) of a room with a Flagg & one of the most impressive Joe set ups I've ever seen. I have always wanted a Cobra army. I believe OCD has something to do with it. I like to think of myself as a completionist..... 1000+ cobra soldiers and counting........

I army build just for that reason: i need an army. I love war/battle films and like to have my own. Until family bill issues, i used to have an immense LOTR army, blue shirt, crimson guard, and bat army, but i needed to sell them. I still prefer an army, because you need numbers. and if your going to take over the world, you need an army!

You make little formations with them and take pix. Then you keep buying more and more and next thing you know it is 10 years later and you haven't updated your pictures because you have no room/time to set them all up. It took 2 weeks to set up the formation in my photos. A lot of that was opening wave 1.5 and 2 vipers and alley vipers.
