View Full Version : Blowtorch G.I.Joe Modern Era Review

Eopie Herder

Blowtorch was an innovative figure back in '84 as he was the first figure released that featured a removable face mask. (Ripcord was the same year, but released after Blowtorch) To me, this was the coolest feature ever, at least until '85 when the heads started having ball joints, but hey when you're a kid back in the '80s this was great.

So, I've been looking forward to Blowtorch for nostalgia reasons. He doesn't hold the same fascination for me that say Flint or Snake Eyes does, but I still love the character. And, I'm happy to say that the modern Era Blowtorch does not let down. The body is mostly new parts, the exception being the chest, which is the same as the Snow Serpent and Arctic Snake Eyes. The head is a new sculpt, and looks fantastic. Yes, I said it...a figure that has a lopsided grin and it looks good. (unlike the crap head that belongs to Lift Ticket) The only downside is that he can not hold his torch with both hands properly.
Blowtorch's accessories are almost perfect recreations of the vintage, the pack actually appears to be modified from the original. The torch itself now features two handles and a removable hose, but is so close to the original that it took some close inspection to see that it wasn't. The helmet is smaller and thinner than what we have been used to, but it looks great! Hope to see more. He has a vest that slips over the neck post and is secured in place by the backpack. And yes, naturally he has the removable face mask. Great fit, and the hose plugs into the chest plate like the vintage one.

EDIT : Thanks to forum member 1SGHauser we can see that a panel on Blowtorch's backpack is removable. And thanks to member Irid70 we can see that thanks to the flexibility in the hose the Torch fits onto the side of the backpack. Thanks again for pointing out these two things I missed in my haste to get the review up!

Great figure, an excellent update to the first one.

I can't wait to find this figure. It's totally awesome. The only things that could make it better would be clear visor instead of painted white one and the other minor gripe is that I wish they painted his neck joint flesh colored.

Only real major gripe I have against this figure is the lack of a clear face shield. Otherwise this figure would be an easy 10 for me.

Seeing the construction—which requires the tab to fit into the helmet—I can somewhat understand the faceshield not being clear, although I think clear-molded plastic could be strong enough to have a plug and stay in place...

Great pics, I wasn't excited from the first photos, but I'm more interested in him now.

I'm still not going to jump all over Wave 13 like I was excited about 9-through-11, but I at least dig it more than "Throwaway" Wave 12.

This is the only figure I'd consider a must-have from Wave 13. The others, being either bad repaints or Resolute, I'll wait til I see them in person to get, since I have no need for them in my display.

Wasn't his mouthpiece black in the cartoon? I honestly think black on the facemask would A) look better and break up the space of all the yellow and B) look more realistic.

Not exactly true to the original figure with a black mask, but I think I'll be painting mine black anyways.

I think a black face mask and helmet are perfect for Ripcord.

Holy crap, that opened a floodgate of memories. Like a smell you haven't smelled in years, you know? I forgot all about the centurions! Thanks, Blowtorch!

Now who's gonna take the first crack at a centurion custom with the Blowtorch body???

I thought about that but then isn't the Eel's mask pretty sturdy (I know the Eel mask being one piece might make it sturdier)? I need a spare Blowtorch (in case I completely botch the job) to try and "fix" that face shield.

DarthBrett
12-04-2008, 03:58 PM
I just remembered that I tried fixing the mask on the old figure when I was a kid, too! I cut out the yellow plastic on the eyes of the mask so that I could see his face. Funny how 25 years later Blowtorch's mask is still giving me problems! :)

Great review thanks.

Blowtorch was a fig I skipped buying as a kid because of the colors, but then I got him for Christmas in my stocking (we still did the stocking thing for years after the Santa thing was over). Yeah he was bright yellow and orange and made my other Joes go blind, but I kinda feel in love with the fig regardless.

This new fig looks great, and a great homage to the original. Can't wait to pick him up.

I picked up this figure last night. Gotta say my rating would be a 7 or 8 due to the poor fitting mask. The fig is great, dont get me wrong. However the mask is wider than the skinny looking helmet so that the pegs on the mask straps dont want to stay in place. All hasbro had to do was retool the helmet to a larger size, rather than give us the same one they have used since the begining.

Why does Hasbro continue to release hoses that are too short and too stiff? I mean Torch is impossible to pose any way you want due to his gun have a small thick hose that goes into the back. The hoses to both Ripper and BBQ do not stay locked into the guns/backpack. And Blowtorch's looks to be just as frustrating.

As has already been stated the hose is very flexible. The problem is that his arms/hands cant grip both handles in any suitable pose. It may have been better if they kept it at just the one grip so he could grab the barrel where the second grip now is.

I love it. Well done Hasbro. I will be buying this, definitely.

Here's hoping they give us an Airtight, but remember, those brightly coloured figures should still be the exception to the rule, Hasbro! They're cool as long as we're not inundated with them.

BTW, some of you guys would be really surprised how often you see bright colours in the military (and yes, I am in the military).

Thank you for posting this, I've been waiting for blowtorch to show up on the internet since last year when the new gijoe figures first came out for the 25th anniversary line.

this blowtorch will great for the new gijoe cartoon called resolute and in the comics as well.

he is inspired from the comics and the mask and helmet design is inspired from the cartoons.

we've already seen mutt and blowtorch (the pics you have here). let's hope for ripcord and his cool halo jumper gear right after the gijoe rise of cobra movie version of ripcord.

maybe they can reuse the figure and accessorie mold for repainted on mack and backpack for a cartoon inspiration maybe for DVD packs.

Yeah, I dig the black mask and pack. For one, I don't like weapons that are brightly colored, even if they're a painted flamethrower pack. Also, it helps make him not look like exactly like a cartoon fireball by splitting up the area with some black. I think I'll paint mine that way, if I ever find him.

A shame the yellow wasn't more that color, and the red more maroon. Would have looked a lot less silly, as it's a great sculpt. The colors are a tad too basic for my tastes.

ahhh, I just opened this figure after finding him at retail yesterday. He's awesome. I just have some issue with his mask staying on his helmet when he's wearing it. The mask keeps popping out of one side. I had him as a kid and IIRC, the peg in the backpack was in the middle. I always used the backpack upside down I guess because it seemed more natural with the connection at the top to me. Obviously, it goes the other way given where the peg is now lol. I like you can attach the flame thrower to the pack. The removable panel doesn't really seem to serve a purpose, but it's cool I guess. 9/10 for me.

Cool! Are you guys planning on going back and reviewing the older figures, too? I enjoy reading about the figures and such and with the new poll feature on the reviews it makes it fun to see what others think about the figures.

I'm a little disappointed. I got one to open just a few minutes ago, and his mask will not lock in on both sides. That is pretty poor design right there. Does anyone know how to fix that?

Yes, Wave 3 reviews start soon, and we're working backwards from there. We've actually covered everyone from Wave 5 on. (Minus some comic packs and exclusives)

Just keep at it. It seems to stay better the more you fuss with it.

Awesome news, Eopie! While I don't always agree with your reviews (Lift Ticket? :D I know reviews are opinions) they are still very in-depth, honest and great to read. Shogi also writes up fantastic reviews!

I just opened mine up and noticed that he is missing his little panel on his backpack. Hasbro QC strikes out again. Anybody else have this as well? It's not a huge deal since it's on his backpack, but it sucks nonetheless. I hope this isn't another Dusty-like scenario. BTW, both my Dusty's had their web gear so I lucked out on that one. I just ordered a second one from GSTG to try and fix his mask so I hope that one has the panel on the pack.

Anyways, the figure is a 10 out of 10!

He LOOKS spectacular.

That being said, like most figures with cords and backpacks, Hasbro just doesn't seem to understand that they have to hold the weapon in a certain way. The arms just do not accommodate his the flamethrower at all. With the hose connected, it's even more awkward. The most optimal position is a one-handed grip with the butt stuck under an armpit. (Obviously NOT how one would handle a flamethrower.)

I'm glad they improved the hose system for the flamethrower (more flexible and detachable from the weapon too), but it's still not long enough. Also, the hose that connects his facemask to his chest is too big to fit into the hole in a way that's tight enough to stay put.

Bottom line: Beautiful figure, but the accessories were not well-executed.

7 out of 10.

Hey at least you got a hole to try and plug that hose into. My Blowtorch doesn't even have this hole. The place where the hole should be is covered in yellow paint. I didn't open him yet though to see if that is the case. Hopefully it is just paint so that I could just scrape it out. I will be upset if it's solid.

as soon as recondo will be on his way. use this figure with blowtorch and roadblock to recreate a cartoon seen from the sunbow episode red rocket's glare.

25th anniversary/modern era figures:

recondo (coming soon!)
blowtorch
roadblock
destro
cobra soldiers

vehicles:

1984 asp
1985 bridge layer w/tollbooth
2008 armadillo

also try to use blowtorch figure to recreate a comic book scene based on gijoe#38 from marvel with 25th anniversary figures of duke, lady jaye (DVD pack), flint, mutt and junkyard, snake eyes, tomax and xamot.

some vintage figures and vehicles

1983 covergirl

the torso sculpt, maybe hasbro can reuse it to create airtight figure with bazooka legs, new head and arms, removable helmet and vest w/hose attached to black chest box, hose, backpack and gun with a cartoon inspiration!

great sculpt and color. A custom color would make it look better.

Just my opinion, barbeque and blowtorch should switch uniforms for what they do....blowtorch's suit looks more like a firefighters and barbeque looks more of an arson suit

I'm glad you brought that up. I noticed that mine was filled with dry paint as well, creating a blockage, but didn't completely cover it. However, I discovered that if you push the end of the hose in hard enough, it will break through and the fit in actually really well. I suspect if you push through it with the hose, you'll probably be able to get yours in as well. If it's too hard, you might want to puncture the paint seal first with a small screwdriver or a thumb tack.

I completely retract what I said about the mask hose not being able to stay put in the chest hole. In fact, it stays on better than any hose accessory that's ever been put out.

I added another picture to the beginning of this. Another comparison shot to the original. If you look at the first one I took, where they are unmasked, you might notice that the visor had been cut out of the vintage BT's mask. I got a replacement in today and took a proper pic.

In the new one, you may notice that the mask on the Modern Blowtorch is not coming out. Yesterday I wrapped one of those clear rubber bands that Hasbro loves to use in packaging around the straps, holding it in place. It basically trained the mask to hold the correct shape, and is no longer a problem. Just goes to show, those rubber bands are very useful...always hang on to a few, you never know when they may come in handy.

If you cut off the little ridge around the bottom of the back of BT's helmet, it will allow the helmet to sit farther back on his head, (ie, off his forehead more) and the mask will attach much better.

Once you've set the battle field ablaze, yellow and red is great camo. Flamethrower is good for flushing enemies out of entrenched postions. It's also fun in CQB.

Beside, he kills things with fire. How is that not cool?

Flamethrowers don't blow up as easily in real life like they do in movies, though. And flamethrowers are used for clearing terrain, clearing out enemy bunkers/hideouts, destroying a secure enemy location......not just killing. Also, they aren't used anymore by the US as weapons even though they were never actually forbidden to be used as a weapon. BLOWTORCH RULES!!!

Of course he rules. Why do you think I bought three of him? Despite the fact that his colors belong in Fraggle Rock, his mask more than makes up for it.

But your right about flamethrowers not blowing up like they do in the movies. I'm guessing his napalm pack likely is coated in some bulletproof material.

Blowtorch was my very 1st Joe as a kid.
I remember a friend of mine bringing him into school & just being blown away at how posable he was, how the head gear removed, & how impressed how much more this figure could do than my Star Wars figs could at this size. I went to my local K-mart (still there) that night & bought him. ^_^ I just had to have him.
So I have been eagerly anticipating a modern Blowtorch since the line began so I could get 1 of my all time favorite Joes back in action,
I'm pleased to say that this figure did NOT disappoint!! ^_^
I love the new flamethrower, the backpack armament options, the mask, & reuse of parts is solid.
I just wish the mask would just fit a bit tighter in the plugs & his helmet seems almost to flexable.
9 outta 10 for me. Yo Joe!!

I thought Blowtorch was pretty cool as a kid. Now I'm wondering if I should in fact place the blame for all the other neon colors that were to come & destroy the line squarely on his shoulders . . . .

He always kinda reminded me of The Centurions.

Anyone who doesn't like the colors, just dilute the hell out of some Tamiya black acrylic with rubbing alchohol (so it will stick) and give him a good wash. I did that with mine and now he LOOKS like a guy that walks through walls of flame for a living and really pops out the sculpt details. I'm waiting to use my friend's cam to post pics.

Excellent figure, except for the mask.

The helmet fits fine, but the mask pops off.

Other than that he's yet another killer update of the original, just like V1 Firefly, Barbecue, or BAT.

Back in 1984, we were poor, my mom and dad worked hard just to provide a roof and food, so Joes were hard to come by.

One day my mom arrived home with Blowtorch... I was so happy. So I was looking forward to this figure. He's a nice sculpt and a great head. My only gripe is his lack of arm possibility.

that is a good story to share with. my story, when my dad bought me a duke figure on card and I saw on back is flamethrower and when I took a look at him and thinking that I really wanted him because he looks so cool and he was my fav joe when I was a kid and he still is, when I was living in korea with my mom and my brother there was no cell phones and laptops around and I did not even have a job it's because I was just a kid and now I'm a grown man working hard, have my own laptop and cell phone. I was really excited for this figure and I should love it, but it is probably the worst in the line. From the mask that doesn't fit on to the backpack which is molded upside down (the tanks are supposed to face up not down), this figure missed the mark at nearly every turn, despite being a very faithful recreation of one of my favorite vintage figures. booooo!!!!!

Recondo was confirmed by Hasbro in the October Q&A. We don't know when or how he is coming, however. As for Blowtorch, he is an awesome figure. Only minor gripes I have are that his chest box was left unpainted for some reason and that his mask wasn't clear like Torpedo's or the Eel's masks for some reason. Other than that the figure is one of the best from the modern line.

I gotta say... in my honest opinion, this is by far the worst figure I've seen in this series in a long time. Perhaps my least favorite out of all of them.

The articulation in his arms is non-existent, the helmet is practically paper thin, the mask doesn't sit right on his face and in fact pops off all the time.

On the plus side, I will say he has a good face sculpt and the colors don't bother me because he has always basically worn "fire cammo"... other than that, he's just not working for me.

i decided to pick him up today, and i gotta say, im not that thrilled. everything about his arms suck, his hands shouldve been done differently. and tha helmet and facemask look cool but doesnt work. i was skeptical and was goin to pass which i did for a while, i shouldve stuck wit that instinct.

I finally got this guy in. The helmet won't stay on for shit, but I like seeing my Joes' faces anyways, and he poses cool with the helmet in his hands.

I painted that goofy red box yellow immediately after opening him, and I may still paint that mask and tubing black. The orange/"I'm on fire" look doesn't bother like I thought it would.

In fact, between BT and Tunnel Rat, I think they're two of my new favorite Joes. Shockwave is awesome, too, with all his neat stuff, but I think Blowtorch is a solid 9.5 on his way to a 10, even with his few issues.
