This is going to be one of the best references for GI Joe ARAH ever written. Definitely looking forward to it.

Well if this doesn't just add to the confusion, they have Daina spelled "Dania" in the index...

Neat looking book, but when I heard about this, I didn't realize it would be just animation character models.
Flint Dille thinks Hama designed the characters' appearances (as opposed to their bioes and names, which he did)? Okay, that was his belief back in the day, but we really don't need that misconception spread. ARAH was a collaborative effort.

hopefully this book sells well that we could get to see Vol. 2 of season 2 characters, vehicles and locations.

I believe so. It's supposed to be like the Transformers Ark books, which were black and white and featured animation models plus commentary.

From what I read many years back, Hama was given the character art to come up with their respective back stories and came up with all the filecards(during ARAH). Not sure if he came up with the names for each character though.

Man it's about damn time we had a character guide reference to the Sunbow series, I can immediately recognize Russ Heath's drawings.

Howdy, guys. IDW tells me VERY late August it will be shipping. Yeah, the whole thing is black & white, as we're trying to preserve and present the classic character models by Russ Heath and others. I tried to add some extra value by presenting information from the file cards, blueprints, and my own research.
I'm working on Volume 2 right now... Season Two, the movie, commercials, and D.I.C. I could definitely use more Sunbow models from either the movie or the commercials, so if you have any reach out to me at transformerstheark AT yahoo D0T com, please!

Hope somebody make an artwork and preproduction art book also.

My wife got me this book for our anniversary. It's a great book. I never knew Sparks had a real name.
The ULTIMATE book would be all the ARAH card and box art. That would be a book I'd shell out plenty of $$$ for.

I got my copy last week. Excellent and also a lot bigger than I thought. For what Amazon is charging this book is a steal, definitely worth picking up and I hope to see more.

I've got it on order from Amazon and it's supposed to ship shortly with a couple CDs. I was surprised to see some of the negative comments on Amazon (it's only black and white...only sketches!!!). I'll reserve judgment until I get it. I liked what I saw in the preview and for $10 or so, the price is right.

For $10 you get a fairly large book for the asking price, it is well worth it. I think some fans were expecting this to be like the Allspark Almanacs that Sorenson made years back but these are more akin to his Ark books and were always advertised as such.
It's a trip down memory lane sifting through the pages. While I don't think the Sunbow toon particularly aged well, I respect the hell out of it because that's what I grew up with. The designs were cool too.

Got mine a few days ago and yes well worth the price. Great history of the characters and awesome sketches. Great ideas for customs as well.

Great for customs and for people who draw too. For a reference book this can't be beat. It also shows the original design for Snake Eyes V2 visor(like the comics), VS the one used in the toon(simplified). His visor on the V2 costume was distinct in the toon...
...and now seeing that renders the 25th battle pack 4 version inaccurate...=/

I just got my copy in the mail today. My only complaint is the use of the RoC GI Joe logo. If this is a book about the 80s cartoon, then why are they using the RoC logo?

I think Hasbro is trying to standardize the ROC logo as the definitive GI Joe logo, at least for the next few years. In addition, Ripcord's name in the book is listed as Wallace Weems.

Hey there. That was an artistic choice that Bill and I made. The truth was, we wanted a symbol that we could put in the corner of the file cards, and RAH didn't offer much we could use. We toyed around with both the star from the logo (which survived as the Oktober Guard file-card) and the Japanese RAH logo, which shows up on the TOC. It's the cool looking eagle. Ultimately, neither one worked all that well. We needed something that would balance well with the Cobra logo. The RoC logo worked very well artistically, so we used it.

Oh, OK. Thanks for the explanation. It just seemed odd to me...like Hasbro made you use it. That makes sense then.

Two separate books. V1 covers 1983-1985, V2 covers 1986-1990.

I was always a fan of the "Stars and bars" Hasbro was using during the newsculpt (2002-2006) days, which reappeared on Pursuit of Cobra.

I liked the book but was disappointed in the spelling errors.
Daina as Dania misspelled and
javelin as javeline
to name two.
I remember getting a Star Trek Voyager unofficial episode guide that was peppered with spelling errors and how I thought it was so unprofessional.
Spellcheck is unreliable too because of homonyms and I see more and more grammatical and spelling errors in publications. I look forward to the next volume, but watch the editing.

So I picked up this book this weekend, well actually my daughter picked it up for me as an X-mas gift. I had a chance to take a look at it before she took it from me and hid it, and I must say that it is way cooler than I even thought it'd be. I can't wait to actually sit down and peruse every single page...and then go through it again!
I can't wait for a volume II!
