Just a few pictures of what I started on today instead of shopping. It'll be different, I reckon its the influence of playing Resident Evil lately... I wish I could figure out some way of using the wire frame in the tail. For now, its just being used to keep my focus on proportions in check. More to come so long as I keep at it.

Edit: Page four latest picture.

Thanks fellas, still got a long way to go. I'm just glad I bought the big box of this Sculpey stuff.

Lookin' awesome my man. Can't wait to see it finished!

Get one of those rubber snakes from a toy shop and stuff the wire down inside it. A lot of them are somewhat hollow... although how you figure our which ones are hollow beats me. You could just start hacking them in half in the store, but I wouldn't recommend it :D

it would take a lot of seriously tedious work but maybe you could keep intertwining the wire to make the tail frame, just bulk up the top and work your way down.

pro's: seriously unique figure, complete poseability, proportions will be acurate
Cons: patience

after your done you could cover the wire in resin and smooth it out to complete the tail

Great work so far. Can't wait to see finished product. If you were to use a rubber snake body you can push a wire hanger the length of the tail for poseability. Just a thought.

If I could find a snake mold that was fairly straight instead of all twisted like you normally find them I'd certainly give it a shot. And I'm not ruling it out yet... I've also though about looking into a soft silicone to cast a mold with. I have a lizard around here filled with tiny plastic beads, if I could figure out how to replicate the style and leave the wire in...

As for the wire, I thought about that too. But once you get about a half inch thick with this phone wire you're just as well off with a plaster. Still, I do have some experience with it.

Have you thought about that Chap-Mei snake monster showing up at Big Lots? The mummy that he comes with attaches to the tail similar to Golobulus.

Hicks_Royel
11-30-2008, 02:32 AM
I looked over the Chap Mei figure the other day, it has the look but I want something different. I'm calling that a plan C for now for when I get lazy.
I don't care much for Cobra-La in and of itself much either... kinda took a massive piss all over everything good. But the characters had potential if the story had been different. Which is actually phase 2 of this project, developing the back story. Yeah, I've been kinda bored these last few weeks...

Anyway, here’s a little more of the effort while I was watching The Shield again tonight:

I turned the torso piece over and took another photo of it. It wasn't intentional, but it looks like something from the Ghostbusters toys.

This is looking fantastic! If you get stumped coming up with a tail to use, you can always just make his hover-ball thing instead. Just make it in a way so that he can be detached from it so if you find a suitable tail, you can then use that

Hicks_Royel
11-30-2008, 09:39 PM
Now that's an idea... The way the lower torso's set-up right now, it could be used as a socket/plug set-up. Hmm... I wonder if I could find one of those old toys of the Battle Planets or War Worlds or whatever they were called to use as a base.
Thanks again for the kind words, folks.

Two more photos:

A little bit of the painting so far. The torso's not the final shades yet so don't think he's keen to wearing turtle necks or anything.

The more I use this dixie cup as a prop, the more I'm just accepting it in lieu of something a lot cooler. I debate painting the one "eye" yellow to better represent the classic Golobulus. I kinda like the grey lense. For the most part everything from the hips up is done. Now the great snake hunt begins.

Yeah, I know the one photo makes him look like a deformed Ninja Turtle...

HOLY HECK!...that is awesome!...no offence to any other Golob cutomizers out there, but this is the best one i have seen by far, even without the tail...you must be mighty proud Hicks...fantastic job on your sculpting...

Thanks, Eddie, and everyone else for the encouragement that kept this project going.

This is one of those rare times when things all fell together correctly. Plus I'm about 60% through with using a junked Serpentor body. Guess this week I'll get started on a tail. Figure if I make the base outta sculpey and just plug the lower torso into it, I can go back later and replace it with something more flexible later on.

Hmm... Don't be surprised to see this sitting top of a butchered Jabba the Hutt.

Hicks_Royel
12-04-2008, 10:27 AM
I've begun working on a static tail/base. Of course, five minutes into the fitting I dropped the lower torso and little teeth went bouncing across the floor. Fortunately, nothing was broken, just popped free. A little bit of glue and it's like nothing happened.

Not much to really see at this point. Except for something that, when turned upside down, looks somewhat inappropriate.

Instead of giving yourself a headache about Golobolus's tail, you could try customizing a hover balloon he had on the animated movie. Looks great so far.

G.I.Eddie
12-04-2008, 04:55 PM
i think the static tail works fine (and looks good)...i mean, if you had a poseable tail, you'd pose it in your favorite position and leave it that way anyhow right?

Hicks_Royel
12-04-2008, 10:52 PM
Probably... Besides, given the less than durable nature of this paint I'm using, I won't be posing him too much anyhow.
At any rate, this will do for now. The real trick will be getting the rest of the paint to match.

The thread that would never die. Forgotten about though... perhaps.

So I said that my Golobulus would be different. I, like a lot of folks, don't care much for the Cobra-la race of snake/bug people and what they did to the Joe storyline. But the characters were certainly a step away from the norm, and could've been so much more if things had been done differently. And in that respect I offer the following, maybe not the best backstory but certainly not an anciet race of snake/bug people.
--
Following in the footsteps of his former mentor Ilya Ivanov, Sergei Golobulech realized that the super soldier of the future would need more than brute strength to rule a battlefield. Determined to design a race resilient to the effects of nuclear fallout, Golobulech endeavored upon some of the most gruesome experiments ever rumored to have been conducted on humans.
With the death of Stalin and the eventual decline of the Soviet Empire, Golobulech’s funding was cut by the ruling powers and Golobulech himself forced into exile to avoid facing a long list of criminal charges.

Rumored to have fled to the mountain ranges of Tibet in the late 50’s, Sergei Golobulech never resurfaced and was officially declared dead in 2000.
--
Like all mad scientist types, Golobulech probably wound up testing on himself at some point when things were tight. This is just the early effort of another WIP to continue the my reimagined origin to Golobulus.

Like your selection in movies "Stroker Ace" "Con Air" pretty cool

Hicks_Royel

Stroker Ace is great, right up there with Hooper and Sharky's Machine... Though I think you've focused on the wrong aspect of the photo.

You forgot seasons one through six of the X-Files... how I wish I'd picked up season seven to finish out the "To be continued..." season six ending. Still drives me nuts.

You got Sharkey's Machine! Thats the only Burt Reynolds movie I don't have before 1984. I have almost every movie he did from 77 to 84 witht the exception of that one. Hooper was bad-ass but I always liked him as the Bandit. Oh yeah I also like the Golobulus custom, whos the guy that is screaming in agony next to him?

Thanks Big Ern. The way I figure a post WWII/Cold War set-up would've been great with a touch of Resident Evil style bioweapons. I'll take more pictures one of these days. The back of the figure is it's own beast.

JR0d28: The Smokey and the Bandit series is in its own league with the Matrix and Pirates movies, Great first movie, alright second, someone should be stoned and made an example of for the third. Found Sharky's Machine on DVD at Wal-mart in the bargain bin years ago.

The guy in pain is a morphing Golobulech/Golobulus. I have to find a little lab coat and torn shirt along with add some small details. I figure the tendrils popping outta his head might explain the fancy headgear on the final Golobulus.

Bandit movies were good and yes the third was not even part of the original trucker plots. As for Sharkey DVD I almost bought but my ex-girlfriend from way back when hates and loathes Burt Reynolds one of the top 5 reasons I dumped her. Also I have part of a labcoat u might want it is from a Dr Mindbender VvV waist part if u want it.

HR, this is seriously one of my fave customs i've ever seen, both the pre and present Golob...the back story is great and the fact that you made Golob mid transformation with the tenticles fly'n out of his is just awesome and makes it so much easier to imagine...

the finished Golob looks amazing...if you ever decide you don't want it, let me know...

the pre Golob looks equally as cool and i can't wait to see him looking more transform-y, with his shirt sleeves ripping as muscles pop thru ala the Hulk...

truely a masterpiece my friend...

Thanks Eddie, there'll be more to come.

Hicks_Royel
01-10-2009, 05:19 PM
I wanted the final figure to look as though he's still transforming. The overgrown left arm going beyond green reptile scales to grey skin and elongated fingers/claws which are still ripping their way out. The same for the back, where the skin over the spine is giving way to spikes or armored plates.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b290/CyberTooth88/GI%20Joe/DSC00445.jpg
I did what I could to make both sides of the lower torso/upper tail symmetrical.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b290/CyberTooth88/GI%20Joe/DSC00447.jpg
And the tail furthers this idea of further mutation, having a longer tail simply extending from the old green scaled skin. I'd imagine that Golobulus [or at least the tail] in this phase goes through something of a molting stage which is why the green scales are simply torn away towards the end.
In truth, I wish I'd done something more with the rattle or simple done away with it. But since he doesn't have a cobra's hood and probably doesn't hiss when aggitated, I wanted there to be some sort of sinister sound about him.
