View Full Version : Has anyone done any repaints?

I am not at all into custom figures making but thought I would do a better paint job on all the figs. Basically just drybrushing to give some extra shadow and depth. I will post some pictures when I get done but wondering if anyone else thought the paint could be better.
I will probably also fill those screws in the legs.

i've done a couple touch-ups here and there.
havent dry brushed anything though. might give it a shot with shipwreck to give more of a dungaree apperance to his pants.
i've seen some nice drybrush work done to beach head that brings out the ribs of his sweater. i just need to find the right color of green.

my touch ups have been little stuff like gold tips on Gung Ho's 40mm grenades, black fuse caps on SE's (v2) grenades, dark green pants for lady jaye, and that's really about it. otherwise its just been marauder inc upgrades for my 25th joes.

oh yesterday i painted legion SS copmpletely black. works great for a typical looking ninja!

post your pics!

I didn't have a lot of time but ended up starting a few. I put a clear coat over Destro to give his suit a leather look and then repainted his head in shiny chrome leaving the eyes the same color. I didnt like the green eyes at all. This looks way better. Not that cheap silver looking water based paint.
I also did the same to Cobra Commander's mask. Again much better looking. Then I applied a clear coat although a bit more subtle to him and his helmet to bring out more highlights. I will probably go with a much shinier coat on his helmet later to make it stand out.
I did the dreadnok up very cool. He has some chrome features like the skulls on his shin guards and belt buckle along with the shoulder guard. His glasses are redone with black lenses and look much better to me. I will have to post some pics when I have time.

p.s. I wouldn't touch them if I didn't have confidence in my painting ability where I knew they would look improved.

Repainted the 25th Snake Eyes in black. Didn't like the grey colour it came in:

first thing...how do you "drydust"?

second thing...where did you get chrome paint that actually looks chrome Snowjob00?

I've done:

Tiger Force Flint
Python Trooper
Ninja Force Storm Shadow
Urban Camoed Alley Viper

and I have a few others in the works as we speak, as well as one that's complete but I'm won't reveal yet due to something I'm working on to accompany it.

I gave my CC a white stripe on his helmet. I painted Shipwrecks shoes and straps and belt black. I repainted both Snake-Eyes black. I gave Destro a glossier finish so it's a leathery look now (as somebody else already stated they did, too). I repainted Firefly completely to be a lot darker. Lots of little touch ups on almost all of the figures.

python trooper ROCKS! i love it! good job on ninja force SS too. he was my favorite in the comics. i've been thinking about how to do a SE form the same era (black/blue/grey w/red goggles)

i'll post up some of my pics in a sec.
repainted legions SS all black for generic ninja purposes
lady jay has dark green pants for my eventual 'toon version custom

i think i'll try repainting CC's mask and destro's head then gloss coating. sounds like its just what they need!

bonus customizer's tip:
for painting heads, get yourself some bendable wire, or some solder, make a coffe-mug sized "lasso", then bend the "tail" upwards, kink the tail at the top so you can pop a head on there to paint without it getting stuck to your painting surface! works great! pics in a sec...

okay here are some pics...

green pants Lady Jaye (next up is brown boots and a GI Jane head swap with brown hair)

and yes he's holding marauder inc's MEGATRON painted with gloss silver

oh man sorry i forgot to answer this for ya.
its mostly used for weathering or making things look worn out.
you take a color lighter than what it already is, dip your brush in the paint and then wipe it on a paper towel until its pretty much try but still has some of the color on it, then you just lightly "dust" over the parts you want worn.
this works great when used with silver on black weapons. gives them a nice "tools of war" look.

Snowjob00

Sorry Eddie,
I havent checked my own post in awhile. Yes, drybrushing is basically unthinned paint that you dip your brush in and then wipe almost dry. You then brush lightly across the surface and hit the higher parts being careful not to hit all the creases, that naturally gives shadows and such.

The chrome paint I used is not a water based but the spray. What I do then is spray into the cover until you get a pool of the paint. You can then dip your brush in and you have to be careful and quick before it dries. Touching the surface it will sort of flow on and you have to drag it around. You do not want to overwork it or it will lose its chrome property and your brush will leave a print in it as it sets up. Sorry if that doesn't make sense. The only thing you can do is try it on some old action figures first and you will understand once you get the feel of it.

When I have more time I will post some pics, the Destro head looks really cool shiny.

Snowjob00

A couple more things, be sure you also have some thinner on hand to clean your brush or it will be toast! Also make sure you are able to set the figure up and in a place it will be able to dry a good amount of time as it will be a fairly thick coat, if you touch it too soon you will have a permanent thumb print in...(based on my years of painting experience I know)

SPC Airborne: saw the Python Trooper and the Tiger Force Flint and my thought was: nice tight paint jobs, they look good. Then I saw the NInja Force Storm Shadow. Wow:eek:! That is going to be copied. I always preferred that costume to the version 2. Looking at the repaint of Beach Head, that would make a great Shockwave.

Driftbot: That ninja is a simple but really elegant repaint. The work is so tight, it looks production. Works really well and looks natural.

really? thanks!
i am kinda miffed it turned out semi-glossy.
i used flat black paint, and hit the parts with flat spray clear before i re-assembled. was really going for a cloth look but ohwell.
its my first full repaint, and first time fully taking apart a 25th figure. once you cut through the glue on the torso with an exacto knife, it pops open easy as pie!
oh and i should have sanded the shoulder swivels. got some rubbing issues there. torso joint has some rubbing too.
otherwise, i'm really happy with my generic ninja! i recommend it to anyone with extra red ninjas or legion stormies laying around!

ohhh yeah! forgot to show my little head-painting rig!
this thing is SUPER handy!

Well, I only have one and the green on the torso had to be mixed and was a pain in the ass. But, if you provide the Cobra Officer, I'll work something out. Email me at airborne4584@msn.com. Just remember, the Cobra Officer body is the Python Trooper and the Cobra Trooper body is the Python Officer. I'll do the Python Officers by request as well but you must provide the Cobra Trooper.

I'm really like'n choice A...for some reason the longer the clip the better I like the gun...no correlation, I swear it!...the "Megatron", as it has come to be know, would only connect this troop more to CC which is the opposite of what I am trying to do…I think choice A is what I will go with, compact and sweet! thanks Xero

I dont know how Gunslinger does his...but what I do with my 25th figure bubbles for recards is to use laquer thinner to take off the old paper and ink that is stuck on them. You have to be VERY CAREFUL though because lacquer thinner is a solvent and it will melt the plastic if you dont wipe it off quickly.

I havent used any non solvent based cleaners to remove the old materials (such as googone) so I dont know if it works or not. All I know is that the paper and ink left on those bubbles are a pita to get off and it usually takes me about an hour to do one bubble...even with the lacquer thinner.

This is my technique for now anyways.

Testors Model Masters. I like this paint better than alot of others ive tried but I guess its a matter of opinion. Easy to clean and gives a nice finish.
