I got this "tan" dragon fly (kind of rough shape) with an '83 copyright date, has the swivel/elevate turret. Got it in a craigslist haul.
Anyone ever heard of this color on an '83?
Is this some kind of variant I'm not aware of?

That's the Locust from 2001 it used the Dragonfly mold. That's why it has the 1983 date stamp.

^ this. They often don't bother to change the date stamp when completely reusing molds. Makes things confusing sometimes.

Did the 2000's locust have the swivel/elevate turret and DF Dragonfly decals?

The stickers look the same to me.

Here's a link to an eBay listing (http://www.ebay.com/itm/GI-Joe-Desert-Locust-Dragonfly-Helicopter-2000-/251103735338?pt=US_Action_Figures&hash=item3a76f2ee2a)
Had the original DF but not the Locust, so I don't know about the turret, but those stickers look the same. I will say the Wild Bill that came with the Locust looks pretty darn cool.

It looks like it's seen enough battle time might be time to put this old dog to sleep.
Or "part it out"

The swivel turret was ran very early on the 83' I think. Because I have one that I bought from the original owner and he said he got it when the Dragonfly first came out. And my kid brother had one also around 83 and it did not have the swivel (or tilting) turret. So your Locust might be a Frankenstein of sorts.

the swivel turret was the early release, stationary was later. The rerelease locust used the early swiveling turret.
So his is factory stock

Yes it did. It also has a peg on top of one of the wings to mount a missle launcher, that was a retool for the Street Fighter II release from the 90's but the 2000 release lacked the missle launcher.
I got this item during spring, I stupidly passed on it back in 2000-01. It is also my 1st Dragonfly toy. I love it. The Tomahawk gets all the love but this toy is incredibly fun for something designed back in 83 or so. Also it IS compatible with 25th figures to an extent. Wild Bill can fit in the back seat(pilot seat) while the front seat(for the gunner) can fit smaller figures, I have ROC Sandstorm in the front.

All this info is great for me as I scored a MISB locust on eBay for 22 bucks at the first of the year and am saving it for later this winter to open and assemble. Was also gonna take some parts and try to cast parts for the fleet of incomplete dragonflys I have. I did peek inside the box but did not notice the turret or the extra part on the wing. So that's interesting for me at least.

I can barely get Wild Bill to fit into this, and his hat looks goofy. The early vehicles are just small enough that the figures after 86, when they started to bulk up, barely fit. Have the same trouble with the Rattler/A-10.
I made a custom Glenda to fit into mine:

I LOVE the Dragonfly mold and had a Locust.
The fact that it had kind of a pinkish tint to it bugged me and finally I decided to replace it with the original DF.
Still a great toy though.

bought a Locust on impulse back when it was on clearance at TRU, thinking i'd never get my paws on a Vintage DF again.
the one thing the Locust had going for it over my old DF was the landing gear/skids actually stay on. (never went 10 minutes without having to put the DF skids back on.)
and yeah, the Locust i have also has a swivel turret. yay.

Agree with this! My DF skids always fall off..sadly the only benefit of that is that they will snap off and not break while in storage..my Locust skids just broke in half. Still looking for a replacement but I might just glue them. Both versions are great and yes they have the swivel guns.

I remember buying 3 or 4 of the 2000 Locust on clearance for $3 a pop at Target. Sadly, I only have 1 left. The others were customized and mostly sold off.
