Not sure which forum but I can't tell you how many times I hold an item for a definite buy only to hear on day of payment "sorry family emergency can't buy."
I'm sure there are such reasons but it has happened too many times for me to think it happens that often.

That's why I never hold anything. Whoever is able to pay first gets the stuff.

Family emergency is code for "My wife found out I was about to spend money on toys and put a stop to it.". Just let them save face and put it behind you.
I love the "something has come up and I need the money" excuse too. Car problems, broken pipe in the house, girlfriend needs an abortion cause I'm not ready to be a daddy. Love those too.

I've never heard the abortion one before. It doesn't really gain the sympathy that I suspect they're after.

It's kind of a genius excuse really. They probably figure the seller would think no one in their right mind would want to use an excuse like that unless it were true.
I made the abortion one up. Attempt at humor = failed.

Yeah, never cared much for the family emergency excuse
myself. Not that family emergencies don't happen of course.
You almost always find that family emergencies frequent guys
with bad reps...of course their home life may be so incredibly
unstable that they should probably consider quitting the
collecting game.

I feel for the baby. It really sucks, first we buy up all the joes so the kids can't find them. Then we abort them. It's tough being a child these days.

No, it was actually quite funny.

I have to admit that I felt pretty low, because the first transaction I wanted to make here I had to cancel because my mother was in a bad financial spot, and I wanted to help her out. And I thought that was more important than toys. :)
But yes, I understand it both ways. I hate when things come up, and sometimes it is true, while other times you don't really know.
about six weeks ago, I sold a laptop on ebay, and it took the guy about a month to pay, citing vague "medical problems."
I usually like to give people the benefit of the doubt, and sometimes, I can be a bit too forgiving of things like this...

i havent had a non-payment in a while.i think less than 4 this year, probably luck.i've held some stuff for shipping before, but only with pre-payment.once for 2 months, they bought a few things here and there thenon the day they said they were ready for shipping,i shipped it.i think they were away at boot camp or jail for all i know.it was all good.
If I ask someone to hold something for me, I give them a time frame - if I haven't paid before time is up, they can sell it off, or return it, or whatever. I also let them know that it's cool with me if they sell the item off before my payment goes through. Also, I make a point to send payment first, and inform them about is ASAP.

I feel bad for the buyers with the money in hand ready to pay who can't because someone without the money bid and won and is just going to dick the seller around until they eventually whip out the "family emergency" excuse and back out of the transaction. My guess is that the parents of the type of person who would pull that crap likely forgot to abort them.
