Has anyone here ever tried to do any Joe themed tabletop skirmish type game? Something like Star Wars miniatures or D&D miniatures?
I'm thinking it wouldn't be too difficult,I've never played either WOTC mini game but IIRC they're basically just d20 but player vs. Player.
I googled around and found some Joe-ish RPG type games and stuff but I'm not looking for role playing and GMing and all that, just one person as Joe and one person as Cobra, with ranged attacks and cover and swords/shurikens for the ninjas. Maybe some way of handling Timber or Junkyard. Obviously there wouldn't be any magic or force use or anything.
I imagine there are D20 modern books for gun stats and such but I'd really rather keep it simple and not spend a lot of time and money on something I'd likely just kill a couple afternoons on.
I figured some Tanker must have had a similar idea at one point or another.

Maybe war hammer rules could be adapted?

I wish there were G.I. JOE Pocket Models made like Star Wars had. I'm not sure if that game ever really caught on, but JOE/COBRA vehicles would be cool to have like that.

I always think about this when I'm at the game store. I would really like a joe miniature line... just imagine the armies of vehicles you could have.

Back in the day we did that with Starwars (I think it was put out by West End back then) at the time, Vintage SW could still be had at the flea market pretty cheap, so it worked out fairly well. Joe stuff, especialy vehicals used to get mixed in all the time.

The recently unveiled mini Joe line looks promising for character pieces. I bet Heroscape game boards and settings would make a nice gameboard platform. I also think you could still have "magic" capabilities if you wanted, like EMP weapons and the Cobra M.A.S.S. device for example.

My son and I got into heroscape bigtime when it came out, like 5 of the main game sets big and multiples of the character pieces for some massive armys. I took some marvel hero cliks and customized my own set of Joes and put them on the heroscape bases also made the power cards to go along with it for the game..games are packed away but I still have the Joe character pieces out. was a bitch to paint that small of setail but snake eyes looks friggin awesome.

I've always wanted this board game since I was a little kid. I'm guessing you mean something like this or what Marine-73 mentioned.

I had the commando attack board game as a kid...still have it though it is missing quite a few pieces and is very far from mint condition...My brothers and I played it all the time
I wrote a few rules systems a while back, which went through various incarnations, and we played a few games using cup-cakes in unit colours...

Two squads of Alley-Vipers flanking a squad of Blues.
We did some Cobra LARP as well using a scaled up version. Worked nicely.

I did come up with the idea while playing Heroclix, but making custom heroclix figs is really beyond my talent/time/money.
I was thinking more along the lines of drawing a grid on posterboard, showing trees, hills, streams, etc. and then using regular 3 3/4 Joes as pieces. On your turn you move x spaces, roll a die plus x to attack, and if it's higer than x you do x damage.
I just thought maybe someone here had had a similar idea and had ideas for stats. I would have used the old d20 Star Wars characters, like say Darth Maul's stats for Snake Eyes, but I can't find my copy of the core rules (I haven't played the RPG in over a decade).

Judging by the fact this game was out in 85, not in a looong ass time. It would be cool if someone would release something like this again, though.

You could look out for a game called "Mordheim".
It's basically Warhammer, with less figures (instead a minimum of 100 figures, you use a small squad from 1 to 10), and a much simplier game style.
The game rules are more or less what you want, and its played using just 6 sided dices (d6).
Since the figures are 1 inch height (2,5 centimeters), i guess you can adapt the rules for movement easily.
It has rules for close combat, melee combat and ranged, with corresponding tables. Pretty simple to change a "Elven Longbow" for a "Sniper Rifle" :D
Cool thing is that you can change equipment, weapons (on each hand or shields) and items, something you can do perfectly with regular joes.
And you can play with just one guy, or a small squad up to 10-15.

Lol, Warhammer rules barely even work for GW's own games, much less trying to convert them...

I'll look into renegade's mordheim suggestion, but I think in the meantime I'm going with Heroclix. I found a guy's site with custom stats for Joes and Cobra plus a lot of other popculture characters.
I'm thinking we can just keep track of the "clicks" with pencil and paper.
Easiest solution since the people who want to play already know and like HC.

Nah, I got a much better job in a different state so we moved but haven't found anyone here to play with...but that was at least 6 years ago when I painted those.

They released a new version in 2002 when GI JOE vs Cobra toyline came out. Not as cool looking, less characters, lamer presentation...just like that whole era!

What about using the old SWM as a base?
