I talked to a DG manager yesterday. Over a month ago I placed an order of 5 sets of DG Joes with her. So I go by last night to check to see if they came in yet. I was assuming not, because she's had my number but I haven't received any calls from her. Last night when I was talking to her she checks her little hand held scanner and it show that they are still on order. And it shows(she showed me on the scanner)that they have an inventory of 18 assorted sets of the DG Joe with the UPC numbers just sitting in the warehouse. The check in date to the warehouse was May 28th. I asked her what the deal was and she said she'll call them after the weekend and she let me know what they say.

Well, this sort of gels with what Hasbro has been quoted as saying at the con about distribution. Sounds like these things are just siting in a warehouse. Hopefully Hasbro will light some fires and get these out to other stores.

I figured if these things are flying off the shelves once they are on the shelves that DG will get these things out there. I don't understand the hassle with GI Joe. It's weird.

The manager told me that there are 18 assorted cases sitting in the Dollar General warehouse where that particular stores recieves their products. So it's Dollar General that needs to get them out onto their shelves.

Look, you have to remember that this is Dollar General. I bet their manager can't remember a time when they sold out of ANY toys! Generally, they sell out and the peg is empty until a different toy fills its place. I don't know their inner workings, but, unlike a Target, I doubt there is a toy manager or someone who is dedicated to working toys. Its probably the same lady that does hair care and toothpaste and pantry items. The only reason this one toy line has gotten any attention is the unusual demand for it.
The fault sadly lies with Hasbro only for making the deal with Dollar General. It sounded like a good deal though. They just aren't set up for this kind of success.

1) They never expected the inventory
2) they never knew when it was going to arrive
3) When they got it, had no clue what it was or what to do with it, just toss it on any random peg or shelf
4) no official peg hooks or price tagss
5) No official word form Hasbro or any details what so ever these were coming officially form any official source aside from the Goggled Gye -Viper
6) Repeated failures with distribution at a store that isn't in every state
7) Loosing entire figures to unkown locales and no care what so ever of finding them ever (POC variant Croc Master and Blowtorch)
8) continued pathetic excuses about what they are doing about it
9) Movie delayed 9 months
10) Movie line of toys totally and roaylly screwed out of retail due to that delay
...will they ever get thier heads outta their collective arses before they totally destroy GI JOE? Doubt it...

DG may be the only place that has the deal with Hasbro but that may be because the other chains did not want to carry them. Not because Hasbro did not offer it to them.
These are small boxes most of the DG stock is small boxes I can see how these can get lost and forgoten in a warehouse. Not that they should.

good lord.
if hasbro truly has very little to do with with habrotoyshop.com and can't manage to figure out an online source to buy said items, then why do they pay designers big money(I'm assuming) to produce cool toys adult collectors want and then continually have no retail avenue to sell then in? people shipping out of they're basements do a better job of getting their product out. why?, because their jobs/professional lives depend on it. whatevs...
I'll get them when I get them. or I won't, as they continue to scratch there heads as to why they think their profits are down. baffling.

I figured if these things are flying off the shelves once they are on the shelves that DG will get these things out there. I don't understand the hassle with GI Joe. It's weird.
When Family Dollar started getting the 25th figures, they were always well stocked. And at $3 a pop, I picked up A LOT. But it seems the Dollar Generals are just not putting these out on the floor. There are enough backwoods out of the way DG's I've been to where there should have been something, but there's not. You have to consider how many Joe collectors there might be across the country, and how many of those are clustered around larger cities. I'm sure there's some mathematical formula to estimate how very few of these have been sold at retail.
What I found interesting is how Hasbro stated they had no idea what happened to the Blowtorch and Croc Master repaint variants. I'd have thought in this day and age there would be a better product tracking method. The DG fiasco is frustrating, but the complete lack of where their product is surprises me.

I would hope some of you older tankers would understand the whole logistical process. Hasbro produced blank number of these figures. DG was the store chain that bought them. Once Hasbro shipped the cases out, they didn't pay any attention. They got their money and were done with it and moved on to the next production. Now hearing so many complaints about not finding any of these in stores, they (Hasbro) is starting to investigate why these figures never made it out. The fault lies with DG and maybe a little with Hasbro not checking on the stocking of these figures. Hasbro has reps that go into every store and if items that are suppose to be out on the shelves are still in the back, they will pull them and merchandise them as well as order product that is not there. I feel that both DG's distribution and Hasbro's lack of follow-up with their field reps have contributed to the issue with not seeing to many of these figures.

Exclusives? They are sold at Dollar General and some place in the Philippines. To be exclusive, they'd have to be sold only at one store. You don't know anything about Dollar General's business or which company approached which first regarding these figures. If Hasbro was shopping stores to sell these in and DG happened to buy in, they're not necessarily exclusive unless they offered that specifically to DG or DG asked for it specifically.
DG has more stores than Walmart so they must be doing something right. They provide inexpensive goods to consumers. They happen to offer some inexpensive toys as well, including something a select few that are on this forum in particular want. This is one item that was sold in after their store planograms were set for however they map out their sales floor. It's one of many items that have slipped through the cracks when they first arrived. The DG Joe situation will eventually sort itself out if/when they add them to their shelves officially.

They must be exclusive (in the US of course... exclusives are usually available in different places depending on the country you are in), or Hasbro would let Kokomo, BBTS, Entertainment Earth, etc order them. Those guys have got to be dying to do it... I know Kokomo said they can't.
Seems really stupid to me, but then I think pretty much all exclusives are stupid, unless it's an item that could not be made otherwise unless a store takes a risk. But why give exclusives to a place that doesn't care about stocking them? I'm sure they didn't get some big upfront payment for them or anything.

What inexpensive toys do they sell? They sell toys that are limited in articulation for the same price as you would find at any other retail.
If anything, they are ripping people off with what they charge vs. what you get in quality
IE:
Transformers minicons
MU figures
GI Joe battle figures (the small ones that little kids like)

Talk about all over the place, at the 2 closest stores near me, an hour and an hour and a half away, they both had toys up on top of the shelves near the ceiling and also spread all over the store, even some mixed in with the womans underware and bras! 1 of them still had the VvV singles with no gear but otherwise, no Joes at either of them.

No sparky, the information that was brought to the table by myself was that eventhough so many DGs are not seeing these Joes anymore they are sitting in a DG warehouse. And the warehouse where the DGs in my area get their product from have had the Joes sitting there since May 28th. What I am getting across to everyone is just to add detail to Hasbro's comment about the DG Joes as not knowing where they are at and I was just informing these folks. And I do feel it necessary to let Tankers know what little and insignficant info(in your eyes)I come across. If they don't care to know or comment noone has to post anything in my threads and just let it die.

See, here's a guy that's thinking. I'm not familiar with DG per se, but there's an awful lot of water toys and beach shit in the DG toy department that's gotten rid of at any other retailer's toy department, usually by labor day.

I think they are trying to figure out what the hell happened and how they came across toys that have generated more interest, phone calls or emails than anything else that the company has had combined over the years.

I work in retail. Believe me, things don't get put on the shelves because people just tend to forget things are back there, don't bother to look, having a bad day or just don't care. No one scurries to get everything in the back out on the floor, we just make sure the floor has something. Maybe someone at the DG warehouse doesn't see these as being priority or just doesn't care.
I don't work in a retail store that has toys, not my fault, don't yell at me. :)

I remember one instance, my store had a whole stock of an item that "wasn't selling," so corporate had us ship it all to another store. It wasn't until then we noticed, it wasn't even on the floor for customers to look at, so it was just shipped to another store in a different area. I guess these things happen. Most people who work in retail make peanuts and the ones who do make money aren't the ones in store taking care of stock.

I used to work at a toy store and I learned quickly that the "backroom" was a myth. While we did stick a few things in the back that simply didn't fit, the selling floor was the warehouse and people used to get so angry when they would ask us to check the back and we would say all is out... I used to walk them back with me just to show them we weren't hiding toys, lol.
Being a collector I did help out as many people I could but we couldn't hold anything for anyone until I suggested we make customer want lists and ended up making some great return customer business.
Those days are gone.

Retail was fun to work at for a while. Especially when my knowledge of toys and my fellow toy dept. workers were appreciative towards my talents.
Though as a Walmart employee I was also expected to know everything else about the items in every aisle. Why? Because a customer doesn't see toy dept on me. No they see a uniform and a name tag with a person in the area they need help in. I was never mean to any customer on purpose and I took care of everyone, for the most part, with care. Hot Wheels people were annoying though.
I basically knew what was back in the back and what was not. Unless I had been gone on vacation or we were swamped with overstock from Christmas. I knew what items we had and didn't have. I would always check to make sure, whether it was by me actually going to go look or checking by the handheld machine. Customers always came first as I was taught when I first came to the store. I got fired by someone who didn't seem to believe that. I miss working there even though it was unbelievably dreadful hard near the end. Maybe I should right a book.
If anyone read this, or at least read this last little bit, please take my advice. Find what you truly love to do and do it. Make friends and enjoy life whether your rich or poor. I can see that regret could be a hard thing to live with. I was given a new chance and I am taking it.

It amazes me that Hasbro has so much product in warehouses.but can't seem to get it on the shelves.
As an FYI, Hasbro had nothing to do with distribution. According to Derryl dePriest, Hasbro produced and packaged, then DG picked up from the factories and shipped directly to their own warehouses. It sounded like Hasbro was curious as to what exactly was happening with their figures as well. They also said they were definitely looking into expanding the line to other retailers.

Just a little FYI, the same thing was happening last year at JoeCon. Here's your history lesson: Last year, it was brought to Hasbro's attention that Walmart was not putting out PoC at all their stores - or not even a fraction of their stores. Hasbro was actually shocked to learn this and promised to look into it. Result: very little changed. When PoC ended and 30th began, more stores carried stock, but not before that. What happened to all the stock that Walmart was shipped? Who knows?
I share this to remind people that Hasbro can't do much to get stores to put out stock, no matter their agreements. And I'm sure the Walmart agreement is far more lucrative than a DG agreement!

Shut up.

Oh lord...anyway, distribution for a little while picked up here, so perhaps they're finally getting their crap together, but that's being optimistic. Walked into one Dollar General about a week ago and they had a Duke, Snake-Eyes, Cobra Trooper, Cobra Commander, and Storm Shadow all on a shelf. The placement of the figures was horrible, but the point is they had them. Few weeks before that I check another DG, they had a CC and nothing else. The only figure I haven't found is a Ship Wreck. I'm guessing this could just be an isolated incident, but to get figures here is a bit rare to say the least, I never even seen POC figures anywhere until they started hitting Walgreens.

But if DG has customers coming up to the manager requesting sets it's dumb if the manager says to that customer, "No, we are not bringing in these new Joes unless you buy the old Joes that are already on the pegs." They will be missing out on money. If one set sells and the other doesn't, why would you hold back the sets that sell and still try to sell the sets that don't sell?
I actually fell for it a couple of months ago at one of the DGs in my area. I bought 8 of the remaining mini-Joes. I go back two weeks later and then they bring out 2 whole f*cking cases of those mini-Joes!!! But the 3 3/4 inch Joes that can't do that.

I think they weren't meant to be a DG exclusive. It's just that everyone else passed on them
That's exactly my point. Kokomo (I'm pretty sure it was them, right?) said they cannot order them. And given that BBTS and all the other Joe heavy mail order places don't have them, I'm sure they are in the same boat.
So I suspect they are exclusive, because those places would LOVE to get their hands on these. There's no way they are passing on them.
And it doesn't make a lot of sense... I know BBTS had the VvsV cheap figure wave a few years ago. Hasbro should ideally let them order these figures which are actually good and people want.

Dollar General is a clusterfuck of a buisness and has no buisness having exclusives of any kind.
Hell, in my town we have Dollar General, Dollar Tree, and Family Dollar.
All of which I would never step foot into. These stores are often in areas of town that are far away enough from Walmart that they stand a chance of drawing customers in due to the convenience factor. Having said that, these stores are located in the demilitarized zones in my town and I don't feel safe taking my family in there.
Makes you wonder who is in charge of marketing and distribution at Hasbro? Probably some 20 something kid fresh out of college who has a problem with war toys so he does everything he can to totally crash the figure line.
Somebody mention this has been going on since wave one of the 25th anniversary and they are absolutely right.
I am sure the same people then are working now in distribution. I am not the first to say this but I will say it here and that is those in charge of distributing G.I.Joe and marketing the G.I.Joe figures do the worst job possible. It is beyond belief just how terrible they perform their job.
Hell, they cannot even market the G.I.Joe on the hasbrotoyshop.com site!!!! How bad is it when the manufacture cannot even sell their shit on their own site?

Dollar General sucks. And not because of the DG joes either (Which despite being exclusive to one store in the US aren't exclusives because they're also sold in a hacker/prostitute farm of a 3rd world country according to one tanker.), personally I don't even care about the DG joes that much. The reason DG sucks is because the stores are nasty, complete with sticky floors and fart smell. The merch is garbage, and I wouldn't feed anything from that stank hole of a business to my child. The employees, managers included in most cases don't know anything about the products they sell. But when your store manager is making around $10 an hour, why the hell should they? Yes, Brock's (You'd think a Venture Bro's fan wouldn't be such a stick in the mud.) cheerleader rant was quite amusing, but ultimately pointless because it didn't address the complaints. He did mention there's a plan-o-gram which is shocking, because the DG's ive been to all over the country look like somebody's storage locker with shit thrown everywhere. DG is a clusterfuck, it's great that poor people have a place to shop for poison food but Hasbro is wasting their time dealing with them.

07-09-2012, 12:59 PM
Whether or not there's a DG in RI is not the issue. For my company we recently took a shot and are trying to get our product into Family Dollar. The FIRST thing I did was to determine how many stores there were and where they were, so I could reasonably expect to assess many different aspects of the deal... stock availability, shipping costs, number of units per store, and how much coverage int he US we could get. That's just a first step...
For Hasbro to ignore those elements means they simply made a deal at Toyfair* or some such and pounded these out figuring they wouldn't even be noticed, and it could be a dry-run to explore alternate forms of marketing.
If I come to hate living in a Blue State like N too much more I may hit up Hasbro for a job and explain these things to them.
*go ahead... bitch at me about the time frame... I just threw out a suggestion of just how fast and poorly thought out this deal came to be... it was NOT meant to be a record af the actual deal.

07-09-2012, 01:09 PM
To be fair, Dollar General is the largest discount chain in the US. So, Hasbro shouldn't get any grief just because they don't happen to have any in RI. IIRC, they should be rivaling Walmart in numbers of stores with all the new stores opening this year.
The fact that DG can't seem to be getting product to the stores is another matter all together.
I just keep wondering why is it that the GI Joe toys seem to have such hassles more often than other toys. I recall an issue at Targets where the system wasn't showing that they were sold out of stock for Joes and some stores weren't ordering any new cases. And, then they had issues at Walmart when they started getting POC/30th/Renegades figures where they were not even in the system in order to scan them to buy. Some people weren't allowed to buy them. Still others were at least able to get the cashier to manually make a computer entry so that they could be bought.

Hasbro has stock reps that go to stores and check up on their product. Such as replacing "special offer" stickers on Star Wars figures that have not yet sold and have an expired offer sticker.
Why can't those same reps follow up on product at DG?
Because it's not worth their time or money as far as they're concerned. It's a huge company. The "right people" would have to get involved to fix these issues.
While the design team might be the ones fielding the questions at Fan Conventions, they really have no control over what happens to this product.
I don't see things changing. Many people on this and other threads have shared the same information from DG employees and I think it's valid info. (Even though there are those who claim it isn't)

They are a Dollar General exclusive. According to Hasbro at Con, that's the way they were planned. Dollar General picked up the cases at the factory and shipped them to their warehouses themselves. Hasbro had NOTHING to do with distribution.
When I asked them directly at the panel about them, they replied that they were frustrated with the apparent distribution problems with Dollar General, and that this was not planned to be a one shot deal, and they hope to expand to other retailers as well. This was their answer to MY direct question regarding the line.
I can already see it coming - "funny how they're concerned with DG's distribution problems, but not with their own...." They have to have retailers ORDER product in order to DISTRIBUTE to them.

Well then what are they doing about drumming up support for the Joe toys at any retailer? Seems a lot of nothing, If they care sooo much about Gi Joe like they so emphatically claim, they need to be taking on that fight 100% with retail to ensure this product(or any Joe product for that matter) can get to retail so it quits getting cancelled every year, that cancelled vault is MASSIVE now and should be a point of embarrassment and not a way for Hasbro to show off or be proud of none the least, it SHOWS ABSOLUTE FAILURE like nothing else. Hasbro needs to quit sitting back and saying ":oooh boohooo we can t get you these cool toys we are soo frustrated with distribution" BS! Get out there and drum up support with your marketing team or who ever needs to get on the ball and get retail excited about the product and then provide retail with proper toy assortments that will sell. I dunno, but apparnetly doing nothing isn't helping at all at this point...its nothing more then pathetic laziness and blown smoke on their part.

It's not a cancelled vault, it's a concept vault and anyone who has ever worked as a designer or other artist knows that you have to throw 10 ideas (sometimes more) on the wall for 1 to stick. That display case was filled with the ideas that didn't stick (For whatever reason - marketing, cost, etc). It doesn't represent a failure. It's simply a part of the design process. If we had had the internet in the '80s, I can assure you that Hasbro went through just as many concepts to create the classic line back then.

Of course you know. I'm the fool here, never claimed to be anything otherwise. Seems funny though that hasbro would cancel a hot item rather then solve the distribution problem. Here's a funny thought though, those folks that are sellin em for inflated prices on eBay sure would like to make people think they were cancelled whether they are or not. Especially ones who use other folks to get em, without going to any of the expense of searching for them. That's just a hypothetical situation. I'm sure nothing like that has been going on. All Cancelled, that is all that matters, no need to twist my words (nor thiers). as in WERE Not getting these items. If you wanna call em concepts go ahead. But 90% of those were part of the 30th anniversary/renegades line (remebr 30 for 30?) and were cancelled right out due to retaliation. That is all but obvious....
Actually, what they are now saying is that it is possible SOME of these items might see the light of day thanks to the fan's excitement at JoeCon. Who knows if this will carry forward, but apparently it was shared that it is possible that they may do some polling and offer the most popular to the fans. So the term cancelled might be a bit extreme in some cases.

Yeah SE Duke and Storm Shadow...we already know that...they are givens to always be released...but the rest? yeah...good luck with that rumor...it carries about as much weight as the club taking interest on more con sets...

I found a Trooper and Commander yesterday in a store I had never hit before. I don't know if they were recently stocked or old. They were on the dog food row.
It makes me wonder if I need to hit the stores that didn't have any Joes again. Maybe they were just OOP.
I agree, they're definitely cancelled. No way we will ever see those again. Good call. Well played, sir. I'll put my kids through college on my set of DG Joes in a few years.

Watch out with giving Headman. He's such an elitist that he must not eat or drink any brands which are sold at DG and whatever store he likes to shop at. He shouldn't complain about DG, why would he stoop so low to buy toys designed for the poor.
I guess the hisstank wrestling federation must be a shithole of a location to have such awful DG's. The DG's in my area are cleaner than most of the Walmarts in my area! I don't expect the DG employees to know about specific products as they're stockers and cashiers. I have worse employee interactions at Walmart than I do at DG.
I just can't help making comments but I guess I got all I wanted from DG and it's because I did the leg work to find them. If you want them bad enough, you'll figure out a way to get them. Drive around, trade or get someone else to pick them up for you. Quit the bitching, these aren't like TTT Slaughter. You don't like the store these are sold at, then don't buy them. The only thing about selling them on eBay for inflated prices is that you get to choose to buy or not. A couple months back I put a set of DG Joes on ebay with the starting bid at 99 cents and it still auctioned for $85 dollars in the end! And the guy was an international buyer and was willing to fork over and additional $17 for shipping. And he keeps emailing me for more! So you can't complain about the sellers when there are buyers willing to pay that much.
And plus, after looking, there is no one saying that they are cancelled on ebay.

Man it didn't take you long to abandon common sense for the mob mentality. It seems like you are implying that Lody would like everyone to think these are cancelled so his eBay auctions will sell for more .Am I understanding that correctly? I think you need to go back and read his posts because he has stated several times that these are in fact NOT cancelled . That is kind of contradictory to your theory. It is a shame how a few members with a rather narrow minded understanding of community have created such a hostile environment for trading and selling and even just posting here. What used to feel like a community marketplace has become a mine field of sorts. The irony is the members who are creating the hostilitly claim they are trying to build a stronger community. I've got no problem with free market. If you go out and spend your money on a product and then turn around and sell it for an insane profit, more power to you. I've got no problem with folks helping each other out either. Heck, I sell plenty of hot wheels on eBay and have made some decent money doing it, but I also spent the time and gas to find em. That wasn't the point I was making. In any event, it's all good.

He is the big cheese and if Hasblo is "frustrated" and they haven't been able to fix their issues since Wave 1 of teh 25th anniversary, there is a BIG problem with whoever is in charge of marketing and distribution.
The problem is so big that if they have known about it since 2007 and they haven't bothered to remedy it in this 5 years, the only thing I have to say about it isn't "frustrated".
Instead, it is "gross negligence".
Hasbro needs to clean their house. Bottom line.

Wow some of y'alls really get into it on these threads. I have to say I log in everyday since I created my account over 3 years ago and love all the information I gain about my favorite hobby and sometimes enjoy the bickering but it really has gotten bad lately. It's a hobby of collecting toys don't take it so seriously. I mean I have a career, family, mortgage, bills, friends, etc... Little plastic figures shouldn't cause so much chaos in your world... Just saying my opinion if that matters. And to this topic at hand the facts as I read them is 1) They are not cancelled 2) DG didn't not include them in their planogram so there is no official place for them in stores 3) Many have been produced but not hit the shelves yet 4) Hasbro is looking into the distribution issues and trying to help resolve them 5) give it time and DG, and Hasbro, will make sure these get out eventually 6) And finally we may say the repaints and more waves in the future... Unless I am mistaken these are the facts, settle down...
Lol. Sorry you are missing out! How did you come to the determination that they suck if you refuse to buy them?

I'm going on looks alone. We already have the definitive versions of the Cobra Troopers. They've been done to death now and need to be put on a moratorium for at least five years. And the SS and SE aren't really nostalgic for me as I stopped buying the ARAH figures a couple years before they came out. To me they're just a costume changes made for the sake of making costume changes. The Paine Brothers SE was the last good uniform for him. And SS just looks like he got splashed with mud by a passing bus. Honestly, would people be drooling over a modern version of Firefly v.2 if they sold him at Dollar General? That's one of the most hated figures ever.

Maybe Hasbro needs to hire you for their marketing team, since you have all the answers.
I am sure that Hasbro isn't just sitting back and waiting for retailers to knock on their door and beg for product. I am sure that, considering the fact that RoC product is still sitting on some stores' shelves 3 years later, that retailers are skittish about the line. They don't want to invest their cash in product that's gonna sit, and ultimately has to be clearanced out, because that reduces their profit margin. I asked DePriest about their marketing plan for the line at Con, and was flat out told that they are actively soliciting retailers to buy GI Joe, and are planning increased consumer marketing for the movie line, and expect to continue that after the movie line (I talked to him at length about ads on kid centered TV channels, and how the 80's commercials made me want to g out and buy GI Joe, and how my nephews today want Pokemon and Beyblade and NERF, because those are the commercials they see today. He agreed that more direct to consumer marketing IS needed...)
Fact is - retailers are skittish about the GI Joe line after seeing RoC sit on shelves (and RoC was actually a profitable line for retailers and Hasbro, just overproduced). They can be sold on Captain America movie tie in toys after Thor sat, because it's a different name, same for Avengers after CA, Thor and Iron Man sat - different name, even if the characters are the same. GI Joe is GI Joe, even if the subtitle is different, and that's all they see - GI Joe, not Retaliation, or Renegades, or 30th Anniversary. it's a risky line for their bottom lines, and ultimately, that's all business cares about.
Summary, for you "Too long, didn't read types" - Hasbro is trying to sell GI Joe. Retailers need to be willing to buy. Hasbro can't force them to buy it. Marketing direct to consumer needs work, Hasbro realizes it, and are working on it for the movie line. Hopefully it continues post Retaliation...

Since Hasbro is goofing things all to hell and when the dust settles, even Dollar General won't be stocking these figures I got the best idea to touch base!
Taco Tico can give Joe figs out for free with the purchase of any Extra Value or Kids Meal.
