Comics Should Be Good! Comic Book Legends Revealed #182 (http://goodcomics.comicbookresources.com/2008/11/20/comic-book-legends-revealed-182/)

Apparently the Todd McFarlane drawn #60 wasn't his only one. He also drew #61 and it wasn't acceptable to Marvel so they had someone else draw it.

The McFarlane drawn pages were released as a special (I've never heard of this special, has anyone??) 2 months after the series cancelation cause by that time McFarlane was a superstar.

Pretty interesting.

Not only have I heard of it, I own it. It's interesting to compare it with the published issue 61; it's not what you'd call a spectacular effort on McFarlane's part. You can see why Marvel wanted it redrawn.

A shortage of capes and spider webs caused McFarlane to fail at GI Joe art.

Yeah, I have that issue too. Took a while to track it down cause my local comic store for some reason never got it. I just read it a few months ago side by side just to compare. It was actually quite a neat experience. It was called G.I.Joe Special #1.

Yeah, my store never got it either and any of the downloaded "complete series" have never included it.

Of course not, it was one of his first pieces of pro work. It was when he was first starting out.

There aren't too many artists that their first pro work is great. Jim Lee's first stuff doesn't match his first X-Men stuff.

McFarlane had actually been around for a few years when he drew issue 61. He started with Marvel on their EPIC Comics' "Coyote" and also had a tenure on DC's "Infinity, Inc." In some of his Infinity issues, you can see where he start messing around with layout. For instance: one page had a random background shot of Jade lounging around in a bikini, behind three or four panels.

He didn't develop his 'funky webbing' style until roughly late 1987 when he became the regular artist on "Incredible Hulk".

It's funny how it usually takes a comic artist a few years to develop their distinctive style. Early George Perez stuff looks a combo of Jack Kirby and Dick Dillin.

When the "GI Joe Special #1" was released (early 1995), it was totally Marvel trying to cash-in on the name "McFarlane".

I have both of them.... I like the cover for the special... But the art in side kinda sucks....

It was all the inker's fault... Todd's stuff looks better with a good inker... but his work was still a little off with the perspective... not his best work...

Remember, the cover wasn't drawn by Todd, it was Phil Gosier imitating his style to cash in on the popularity of McFarlane... as mentioned before...

I bought it when it came out because I was hoping that the series was relaunching, or that there were more specials planned. Mainly I bought it because I was hungry for a Joe Comic.

I've known about it for a few years, but never knew it was a rejected issue 61. I kinda have even less enthusiasm about it now :)
