So I work at night. I get home yesterday, eat and go to bed. At some point I wake up and realize the house is hot as balls. The A/C isn't working.

I call around to a couple places and everybody is busy as hell. Finally get one guy scheduled to come out today, which was pain because we live out in the boonies.

Well he hasn't showed up yet and hasn't returned a call. So far, no luck getting anybody else.

It's been around 100° today with high humidity. The weekend will be the same.

FML.

Bummer, CornDog! My only advice?

1. Open freezer.
2. Insert head.

Be careful, the heat will kill you.

And even though my Maine brother was semi-kidding, I do that every once in a while. But I have a couple big "Ace" brand soft gel freezer pack things that I take out and put on my head and neck a few times a day on a day like this. If I didnt, Id be puking my guts out. The heat sucks.

Hahaha, no - I was prettymuch serious! I just did it the other day, lol. As you know, it's been humid as hell around here!

Try visiting the local libraries or shopping malls when it is hot.

Either that or buy one of those portable A/C units and cool down 1 room in your house.

I've looked into that. I'd just hate to spend that much, if the A/C problem is something relatively cheap. Or expensive.

I'm hoping to get somebody out here tomorrow. I don't think this guy from today is going to show up.

I can deal with the heat myself. I've spent enough time kicking sand that it even though it's uncomfortable, I can manage. But I've got a 2 year old and neither he or the wife likes the heat.

And another thing that sucks, is I don't work a typical work week. I sleep during the day, and work at night. And I work weekends. So I've already spent most of yesterday and today awake. My wife planned out some day trips tomorrow to get the boy out of the house (and the heat), so if somebody does come to fix it, I'll have to stay up tomorrow too.

Strip down and lay in your tub. The porcelain should feel nice and cool. Keeping the lights off makes it feel cooler. Also, putting just your feet and hands in cold water will make your whole body feel cooler.

Had an A/C guy just leave. He said the compressor is shot. To replace the entire unit will run about $4000.

Fuck me.

That makes no sense at all. I have a 3200 sq ft house with top of the line AC hooked to my central air and the compressor itself was like $900 and the guy who brazed it, charged it, wired it, etc., charged me $350. Now I know Im in Maine and auto shops around here only charge $35 an hour, but $4K sounds way out of the ball park for an average house sized compressor and labor associated with it. Buy a couple of those huge window units for $400 each and youre all set.

It's an A/C and heat pump. I thought about window units, but I'd still need a way to heat the house during the winter.

i know how you feel, but i got the opposite...
my a/c was going out last year, but made it until winter. then last winter my heat pump/furnace went out on a week when it was 5degrees...had no choice but to replace it then....
worst part, when it went out my a/c unit went with it...had to replace both.
my house is only 12 years old, and we are not planning on moving, so we bought a nice unit with an air purifier...$8500 bones later...im sitting in my 72 degree house while its 105 outside :)

Still man, I put in a brand new, top of the line central heat & air furnace and compressor a few years ago and the TOTAL cost for the units were just under $2K. $4K sounds like a LOT of money. You better get a few estimates before going with someone. In the meantime, pick up a single window unit and some fans.

Definitely. We've had a problem actually getting anyone to come out and look at it. Even the ones with "24 hour emergency service". A couple have said it's too far from their service area, once of which was less than a mile. The two most reputable places said they are just too busy right now. A guy came out today and he pretty much said the same thing, although his quote to replace the unit was cheaper, the service warranty didn't sound as good. The first company offered free yearly inspections and service, which I guess isn't really free since their initial cost is higher.

We've closed off the entire house and have taken to living in the living room. We're running fans and a friend of my wife had an older window unit she's letting us borrow, but it's not making much difference. It blows cooler air, but the house is still over 80 degrees.

Yeah, that sucks. Not sure if you can, but put the windows down at night with fans in them. It helps big time. Good luck!

Well, we had another company come out this morning and offered us a used unit for as much as the second guy was offering for a new one. We had called him on Friday, and he called us back this morning around 7am got here about 8am.

After talking it over with my wife, and we decided we'd go with the first company. Simply because other than offering us a quality, new, name brand unit, and years of free service, they are a Christ driven company.

I know for some God isn't a popular subject here, and in some instances can lead to warnings, topic deletions, and the like, but the owner and the young man who came out are good, religious people. After talking to the lady who told us about them, we found out they've put complete units in houses for people in need free of charge through their church. She had said they even had came out and fixed hers for free. And they didn't charge for the consultation. The others that came were $75 and $50 respectively.

Where some places are price gouging because of the heat wave, these guys are working to help people. You don't find many like that anymore.

So anyway I called them and said they were who we'd like to go with, and they pulled in the driveway about 10am. They're putting it in now.

I feel your pain. Our AC went out last weekend and we were freaked that we might not get it repaired before the holiday.

Luckily we have a home service that charges us only $60 for a visit.

I totally expected this thread to be filled with lovely ladies trying to stay cool. You're slipping Corn Dog. It must be the heat.

I am so glad the 100+ degree day streak is going to be ending here in NC tomorrow. The temperature tomorrow here is predicted to be in the 80's. That will feel a whole lot better compared to what it has been.

CornDog, I am glad that you are getting your A/C fixed. I hope it helps you and your family get back to a normal routine.
