View Full Version : A thief among us!

Can't believe this happened among this community, but one of our own, Flint071 had his Ocktober Guard set stolen right from under him from a fellow collector and Im sure a scalper. At Flint's discretion, we're not going to name names yet, but know that we do have witnesses and photographic evidence and we know who did it!
So Be On the Look Out for someone trying to sell a set over the next few day and make sure you get a Certificate of Authenticity, because that was the one thing he wasn't able to take.
I hope this is okay to post and we can bring this guy to justice.

What gets me is that it happened to such an awesome, upstanding guy who goes out of his way for his brotha man, I mean shit, he got together with the guys on og13.com and sent me a walmart gift card and a Techno Viper when my daughter was born and he's totally humble about it!
I would love to give the guy(alleged thief) the benefit of the doubt and the whole thing was a misunderstanding and he grabbed the wrong amount of boxes and couldn't find Flint to give back the set he by accident took, but from what I hear, this is not the case. I just want to see Retribution for what this dude did.

well how about this little story!
A while back I was at Wal-Mart, we were in the checkout line with a basket full of Joes and food and candy and.....you get the idea....we are right next to the 15 items or less register...it has one lady in it. A guy speed walks up to that register with a couple of items, coke and some bagged stuff.....he almost immediately starts huffing that the checker is slow, and then the lady customer in front of him takes out a check and starts to fill it out. This brings the guy to groaning and tapping his foot and muttering about how its the express lane and should be cash and how dare she pay with a check and yadda yadda yadda....the customer gets done and he slams his stuff on the little counter, the checker starts to scan his stuff, then something would not scan. He exploded at her, yelling and cussing and then told her to F-ing leave it off he will just go somewhere else to get it, pays for his stuff with a card(almost broke the swiper) rips the bag out of the checker's hand and basically sprints for the door.....
Ok at this Wal-mart after 10pm only one set of doors are open and you have to use the other set....as this ass was running to the doors a couple of people are heading towards the doors, now hes on a slant to try and time the doors opening so he can just bolt out the door...However....
the doors are locked, its 10:05, he hits the doors in mid-stride, drops his bag, busts his ass. When he hit the door it was really loud, everyone was watching him cuz we ALL knew it was coming.people were cheering, laughing and clapping!

I'm pretty sure it's already either up on eBay, or sold already.
I feel bad for the guy, but I doubt there's a damn thing that can be done about it other than a permanent ban for the person if the thief is discovered.
... and honestly, that's not much of a repercussion.
Now, if the thief is discovered and Flint had a chance to confront them... that would be entertaining.

It isn't up for sale currently and hasn't been sold on ebay, i've checked all the auctions for boxed sets. One important thing to remember is Flint has the COA, all boxed sets that have sold have had them. No legit collector will have thrown them out.

I'm just hoping that its not one as a few of us who weren't able to make it to the con prob had asked some of the fellow tankers going to pick up a set or even split a sent with them. so like I said would like to know if the culprit was a tanker but not to name the name as I think only the admins should step in if theres prove for the guy named . remember you have to be proven guilty not just assumed .

Allow me to play devil's advocate for a moment:
I'm pretty sure there's no appealing (cost-affirmative) legal action that can be taken at this point, especially since I'm sure Flint and whoever this alleged photographed thief is have gone to their respective states. Considering you don't know your alleged culprit's name it makes things distinctly more difficult.
Can you prove that set being held by the alleged thief in the photo is not his? I seriously doubt it. You're just assuming because you saw something suspicious - and by suspicious, I mean he is holding something EVERYONE had. That isn't evidence.
I am sorry someone - according to their friends - was so drunk he allegedly got taken advantage of by someone. Be more careful in the future.
Also, I would recommend that you be held personally responcible for any negative reaction that comes about because you name someone YOU SUPPOSE to be thief as one. That is a remarkable guess on your part unless the person is wearing a black bandit mask and a striped shirt.

well i wanna know/see what the eff happened. what is the deadline? someone send me an interesting pm...

07-02-2012, 08:48 PM
Let me be clear on a few things.
First: I don't know that this person is on the Tank or even associated with the Tank - so nothing to out just yet. I also have no intent of a witchhunt. If this person realizes that they are in possession of an extra set and wants to do the right thing I am not going to run their name into the ground.
Second: While this is my set, it was already promised to KUSHVIPER in a trade. My level of interest in having the set returned is to honor that trade with one of my friends here on the Tank. He doesn't deserve to go without a set because of someone elses dishonesty.
Third : I am well aware that my level of intoxication played a part in this. And if not for my desire to get that set to Kush this thievery would not have been even spoken about. There is always a price to pay for your OWN actions, and I was drunk at Toy Convention in New Orleans.
But because I was trashed OF COURSE that makes thievery ok and I should probably be doing nothing to try to rectify the situation. It would only be unacceptable if the person who was stolen from was a sober and upstanding person. I thought our Community was better than that. And I am SURE that there would not be any similiar threads if the situation was reversed. But hey, no judgement right.
Fourth: I missed the opportunity to confront the person because by the time that the information came my way I was ten minutes from boarding my plane to return home. Darkwise and our crew were still in town but they could not coordinate the confrontation.
Thanks for your time.

The fact that the victim (FireFly) was or wasn’t intoxicated is completely irrelevant.
True enough it was not the best judgment call, but the theft remains such as it is, A Theft.
Having said that, witness accounts and supposed photo evidence may not be very reliable. I am not saying the theft did not occur, I am questioning if these people saw the actual theft in progress and therefore have the correct person identified. As I have neither heard or read any of the witness statements and have not seen the photographic evidence, I wouldn’t want to say this person or that is the culprit. To throw someone’s name out based on the assumption of guilt equates to no more than a lynch mob response.
The fact that someone is selling a set without the certificate is compelling but not conclusive. As an investigator for many years I can tell you in a case like this, you need to tread carefully in saying who is the thief and who is an inexperienced seller.

I think confrontation would have been had we been able to catch him - in the act. However, there are those pesky reciepts that actually showed how many sets you bought.

I would love for you to have been able to 'confront' this alleged thief in person so the police could arrive and - as a mature, educated individual - they could tell you that you have no claim: a person does not have to prove they purchased something due to a complaint (a stranger cannot come into my house (or hotel room) and say I stole his couch and thus I must present the reporting officer with a bill of sale) and better yet that you are more likely to be arrested for harassing and, I'm going to guess based on your probable behavior, threatening someone.
It would have been an interesting affair for you. XD
Tom
but they were in public and the "thief" would have had to have a bill of sale for each one he picked up or he wouldnt have been able to pick it up....it is required by the club that you bring your invoice with you to the registration....so not the same as coming into your house or hotel room, and if someone would have spoken up at the time the guy couldve been stopped before he left that area, there were police and security there.....

To be fair now, there is no law against second-hand purchases. If I buy my set properly and on the up and up, walk out to the lobby and some guy comes up to me and says "Hello. I would like to buy that." and we do business, he's not buying a gun or a car - the only thing we need to exchange is cash. Our information flow ends there. He never has to prove he bought it in one fashion or another.
And of course, if you spotted the guy doing it at the moment, you'd be well within your rights to pitch one heck of a fit.
I realize your situation is a crummy one but at least you're being partially reasonable. That's good of you.

If the guy is a good thief, he probably could have taken the set from you whether you were sober or drunk, so don't feel bad about it. Unfortunately, if the guy has any sense he'll just keep your set for himself and sell the one he has a certificate for.

You being trashed has nothing to do with said persons motivations. I feel, for you sir and this whole thing makes me sick!
On a side note, I had some tool-box push my wife...who at the time was holding my two year old daughter, during the parachute drop. Both me and her brother where on the roof dropping the troops down having a blast. At no point in my mind did I think my family maybe in danger. …just sad!
My wife told me after he tried to push her down and failed to grasp a Para trooper he jumped to the ground and crawled under the fence to get one. ..Again just sad!

It was mentioned at least 4 or 5 times that everyone should make sure they have the COA otherwise the set is worthless or something. How so? I hate to say it, but that COA really is a meaningless piece of paper. People sell the sets all the time without them. The bagged sets don't come with them. And if the thief breaks up the set and sells individually, the COA is completely taken out of the equation. I hate to hear about people getting ripped off, I really do. But that COA isn't going to do a thing to get that set back or prevent it from being sold.

Only way the COA would be beneficial is if each figure and box (would need to be a metal box at that) were engraved with individual numbers that linked back to the COA and then a copy of those numbers and COA on file with the club...if the numbers were scratched off you would know there was some tomfoolery going on...

I don't think the COA is going to be a dealbreaker for resale or the lack of one more than a passing thought to someone - but every little bit helps.

Part of me wants to give you the benefit of the doubt and say that you are just someone who needs to take the "opposite side" or devil's advocate just for the sake of filling some void but you truly are coming off in your posts as that one friend we all have that we just accept as "that guy" and promptly try to ignore. This is about someone, a fellow tanker and good overall good guy, getting something stolen and whether the person was intoxicated when it happened does not make it any less of a theft. Feel bad for the guy to some degree because as human beings that is what we do when someone has something bad happen, don't buy a possible stolen set if you have a conscience and the rest is just drama. No need for it.

I think this is because Joe Con is more about making money off of the exclusives than the convention itself. It's no longer about meeting people, having fun, enjoying the hobby and discovering the city. Instead it's get a hotel, get drunk and make a shit load off the exclusives and boxed set.

At that time of this we had been in line for almost 3 hours and they had been in line for over 4 hours.....and all that really happened was that he yelled my name out and said something like glad to see you fuc&er....to which one of the club guys came instantly unglued and yelled at him to shut up and not speak that way, and if he continued to behave like that he would have the cops to take him out of there! From there it just got heated until the cop came over and calmed both of them down....DW had a slip of the tounge and the club guy over reacted.
But implying we were glad it happened or whatever is bs, I am happy that he didnt get booted but at the same time the club guy was way overboard. I even heard them talking and gloating about it later and then a couple times during the weekend heard others talking about how they put some dumb collector in his place or threatened to kick someone out.
So yeah, I think tempers and attitudes were pretty awful this weekend, and much douchebaggery was afoot!

I think this is because Joe Con is more about making money off of the exclusives than the convention itself. It's no longer about meeting people, having fun, enjoying the hobby and discovering the city. Instead it's get a hotel, get drunk and make a shit load off the exclusives and boxed set.
well it was New Olreans and thats what they promote; drink, eat and gamble.......there are other things to do, but if you are at the con all day by the time you get out there are not a lot of attractions still going.
I still say NOLA is not a great Joe or any type of TOY convention....there is not enough of a diverse arena of things to do for families...especially not when you spend 3/4s of the day in the con.

Rob - Take property unlawfully from (a person or place) by force or threat of force.
Since people are paying the prices they see on eBay, it wouldn't be considered robbing unless the person doesn't receive the item they paid for.
Commentary like this is unnecessary.
