View Full Version : SEARS Cobra Cat variant?
Was looking through the old Sears catalogs online and saw the Cobra Cat. Was this just a prototype used for publicity or an actual variant?

Are you referring to the difference between the red turret body in the picture compared to the black turret body in the Yojoe listing?
YOJOE.COM | C.A.T. | YoJoe.com: Dedicated to the G.I.Joe of the 80's, 90's and beyond! (http://www.yojoe.com/vehicles/85/cat/)
Yojoe does not list a variant, so chances are it was a pre-production piece that got used for promo shots.
Yea, cause there is also a completely different decal as well. It actually looked cool with the red turret and black roadwheels as alternate variant.

There's a random Snow Serpent placed in that photo. I mean, I'm sure he was just in the wave release... but still... "Hey, there's a lot of rock and dirt and it's kinda hot... but there's also a Joe in a parka up there. Send in the snow serpent!"

I love the fact that we have every figure shown in that pic in the ME form.

I don't think we've seen an ME Frostbite...have we? More on topic, don't believe that there is a variant, just a different deco created before it went into full production.

We do have a Frostbite, mbut unfortunately it is not in the 25th A.R.A.H. scheme.

The change of look is kind of like the comics in that they had a general idea, but things changed through the production for the final release.

Oh yes, I forgot all about that! I was thinking about White Out and the Wolf Hound that maybe he was thinking that was Frostbite.
That one wasn't anywhere near ARAH style though, although somewhat closer to the v3 version I think from 1993?

Nope that was all black.
Yeah that was the Consumers Distributing Cobra tank. All black. Its odd though that the USA Sears had this protoype while the Canadian Sears had the released version in its catalog. Both are from 1985.
The CAT despite being a repaint was always a Cobra vehicle I wanted when I was kid and even today its a cool vehicle. I just bought my second vintage one off of ebay for $50.

It was a variant.
Is the red turret one out there somewhere you think? Must be extremely rare.

Love how the Snow Cat has Barbecue riding on the back.

Two questions:
That Ferret is the mail in version? Looks like it's lighter blue than the retail one.
Why is Snow Serpent riding the Snowcat and where's the canopy? lol

It was a variant.
Wrong. This is, like mentioned, is a test shot and was used for that pic and nothing more. If there is one of these out there, there is only one and I am sure Airedevon would know more on this. There is also other vehicles that had different colors on the box or catalog but never found. Aire is even looking for one that she mentioned in her collection videos.
The Canadian Consumer Tank is all black like mentioned also. The only variations on the Mobat type tanks was the tread, don't recall there being anything else. I have seen a prototype of the Mobat but not one labeled CAT tank.

This was probabley some protoype/mockup idea for the pics that was scrapped by the time it released to retail due to that awkward color scheme....I prefer the way it turned out over this thing...

lol...yeah I never understood why a Snow Serpent was driving the Snowcat.
I know one of my younger brothers got the Ferret for Xmas from Sears and it was the darker blue. Could just be the lighting in the picture.

this is 100% correct. Almost all the catalog items are prototypes, as are the figures. Their are tons of small differences if yo look at te various catalgos

Anybody know how to get the sticky gluey residue off the vehicles from the aftermath of the removal of the old hasbro stickers? Am trying to refurbish my two CAT's as I ordered fresh decals from CobraStickers.

Mineral oils have worked well for me like, plain old WD- 40. Just spray some on a rag and attack the spot! I've never damaged or scratched or discolored anything using it.

Protoypes/mockups always made their way into the Sears catalogs. Remember the straight-arm Stinger Driver, or the muffin head Tomax & Zamot?

Thanks, I'll give it a try.
The Cobra CAT with the red turret and black body reminds me of the main t-80 tank in my old Soviet Strike game from PS1, heh.
